Shear wave elastography for differentiating parathyroid neoplasms with malignant diagnosis or uncertain malignant potential from parathyroid adenomas: initial experience.

OBJECTIVE: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) and atypical parathyroid tumor (APT) are rare parathyroid disorders carrying the risk of recurrence of varying degrees. This study aims to explore the value of 2D-shear wave elastography (SWE) in the discrimination of PC/APT among suspicious parathyroid lesions. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In this prospective study, patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and suspicious parathyroid lesions on ultrasonography (US) were recruited. All the lesions were assessed by SWE before surgery. The velocity (m/s), Young's modulus (Kpa), and elastogram of SWE were compared

Diagnostic role of thyroid elastography in pediatric patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease: A prospective controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease are autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland, and both diseases are diagnosed with ultrasound findings and autoantibody height. However, ultrasound (US) findings may be normal in both diseases rarely. In some pediatric studies, it was reported that shear wave velocity values in autoimmune thyroiditis were significantly higher than normal thyroid parenchyma and it was recommended to be used as a diagnostic method. Our study will address the evaluation of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease by thyroid elastography and t

Predicting meningioma consistency and brain-meningioma interface with intraoperative strain ultrasound elastography: a novel application to guide surgical strategy.

OBJECTIVE: Providing new tools to improve surgical planning is considered a main goal in meningioma treatment. In this context, two factors are crucial in determining operating strategy: meningioma-brain interface and meningioma consistency. The use of intraoperative ultrasound (ioUS) elastosonography, a real-time imaging technique, has been introduced in general surgery to evaluate similar features in other pathological settings such as thyroid and prostate cancer. The aim of the present study was to evaluate ioUS elastosonography in the intraoperative prediction of key intracranial meningiom

Anetoderma in a Patient with Newly Diagnosed Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

A previously healthy 28-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with respiratory failure and was found to have significant lymphadenopathy on her CT scan. A lymph node biopsy was performed; the pathology was consistent with a diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma and the patient was noted to have multiple, wrinkled, nonscaly, oval-shaped papules that were easily compressible (Figure 1) and were present on the upper and lower extremities, abdomen, chest, and back. The lesions were entirely asymptomatic and had first developed 1 year prior to presentation. Since their initial development, the wrin

[Magnetic resonance elastography of the brain].

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a novel imaging modality allowing quantification of tissue consistency. Multiple trials have focused on the use of MRE to describe meningioma consistency prior to surgery and on improving diagnostic accuracy of normal pressure hydrocephalus and other dementias. MRE shows promising results, but still lacks direct clinical translational value. Within neurosurgery and neurosciences MRE could contribute and improve decision-making, diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, the use of MRE will improve the basic understanding of neuroanatomy, physiology and patho

A non-invasive technique for evaluating carpal tunnel pressure with ultrasound vibro-elastography for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome: A pilot clinical study.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a disorder that affects the median nerve at the wrist sufficient to cause impairment of nerve function. Elevated carpal tunnel pressure (CTP) leads to median nerve pathology, sensory, and motor changes in CTS patient. The techniques to quantify CTP used in clinic are invasive. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of a noninvasive ultrasound vibro-elastography (UVE) to predict CTP in CTS patients and healthy individuals. The magnitudes of shear wave speed ratio (rSWS) of the 10 CTS patients (10 hands) and 6 healthy individuals (12 hands), and 10 cadave

Effect of organic matrix alteration on strain rate dependent mechanical behaviour of cortical bone.

The organic matrix phase of bone plays important role in its mechanical performance, especially in the post-yield regime. Also, the organic phase influences loading rate-dependent behaviour of bone which is relevant during the high-speed loading events. Many diseases, as well as aging, affect the matrix phase of bone which causes compromised mechanical properties. Improved understanding of alterations in the organic matrix phase on mechanical response of bone will be helpful in the mitigation of fractures associated with inferior matrix quality. In the present work, effect of alteration in org

Clinical applicability of shear wave elastography for the evaluation of medial epicondylitis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the ability of shear wave elastography (SWE) in diagnosing medial epicondylitis and to compare the diagnostic performance of SWE with that of grey-scale ultrasound (GSU) and strain elastography (SE). METHODS: GSU, SE, and SWE were performed on 61 elbows of 54 patients from March 2018 to April 2019. An experienced radiologist evaluated the GSU findings (swelling, cortical irregularity, hypoechogenicity, calcification, and tear), colour Doppler findings (hyperaemia), SE findings (strain ratio [SR]), and SWE findings (stiffness and shear wave velocity [SWV]). Participants

Elastography for characterization of focal liver lesions: current evidence and future perspectives.

Focal liver lesions (FLLs) are a common finding during routine abdominal ultrasound (US). The differential diagnosis between diverse types of FLLs, especially between benign and malignant ones, is extremely important and can often be particularly challenging. Radiological techniques with contrast administration and/or liver biopsy are mostly necessary for establishing diagnosis, but they have several contraindications or complications. Due to limitations of these tools, there is urgent and still unmet need to develop a first line, non-invasive and simple method to diagnose FLLs. Elastography i

Microstructure, mechanical properties, degradation behavior, and biocompatibility of porous Fe-Mn alloys fabricated by sponge impregnation and sintering techniques.

In this study, porous iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) alloys with high porosity were successfully prepared by sponge impregnation and sintering (SIS). The compositions of the porous Fe-Mn alloys were strongly dependent on the sintering temperature, and the Mn content was ~44, 30, and 12 wt.% for alloys sintered at 1100, 1150, and 1200 °C, respectively. The porous Fe-Mn alloys exhibited a well-interconnected porous structure with ~85% porosity and average pore size ranging from 375 to 500 um. The porous Fe-44Mn and Fe-30Mn alloys were mainly composed of a γ-austenite phase, while the porous Fe-12Mn wa

Systematic Review of Instrumented Measures of Skeletal Muscle Mechanical Properties: Evidence for the Application of Shear Wave Elastography with Children.

The aim of this review was to identify instrumented devices that quantify skeletal muscle mechanical properties and to evaluate their potential clinical utility and clinimetric evidence with respect to children. Four databases were searched to identify articles reporting original clinimetric data for devices measuring muscle stiffness or elastic modulus, along a muscle's main fibre direction. Clinimetric evidence was rated using the Consensus-Based Standard for the Selection of Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. Sixty-five articles provided clinimetric data for two devices meeting our

Clinical practice guide for the treatment of perforating dermatosis.

Perforating dermatoses are a heterogeneous skin disease group defined by transepidermal elimination of various skin materials. Four classical forms of primary perforating dermatosis have been described, where the transepidermal elimination mechanism represents the hallmark of the disease: acquired reactive perforating collagenosis, elastosis perforans serpiginosa, Kyrle's disease and perforating folliculitis. Acquired reactive perforating collagenosis presents with transepidermal elimination of collagen fibers. Elastosis perforans serpiginosum presents with the elimination of elastic fibers. K

Ultrasound liver elastography beyond liver fibrosis assessment.

Several guidelines have indicated that liver stiffness (LS) assessed by means of shear wave elastography (SWE) can safely replace liver biopsy in several clinical scenarios, particularly in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. However, an increase of LS may be due to some other clinical conditions not related to fibrosis, such as liver inflammation, acute hepatitis, obstructive cholestasis, liver congestion, infiltrative liver diseases. This review analyzes the role that SWE can play in cases of liver congestion due to right-sided heart failure, congenital heart diseases or valvular diseases

Biomechanical properties of female dolphin reproductive tissue.

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises have unusual vaginal folds of unknown function(s) that are hypothesized to play an important role in sexual selection. The potential function of vaginal folds was assessed by testing the mechanical properties of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) reproductive tract tissues in 6 different regions and across age classes in post-mortem specimens. We assessed the regional (local) and overall effective elastic modulus of tissues using indentation and tensile tests, respectively. We explore the non-linear mechanical response of biological tissues, which ar

Liver Stiffness Assessed by Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography from General Electric Accurately Predicts Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension in Patients with Advanced Chronic Liver Disease.

PURPOSE: Clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) is responsible for most of the complications in patients with cirrhosis. Liver stiffness (LS) measurement by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) is currently used to evaluate CSPH. Bi-dimensional shear wave elastography from General Electric (2D-SWE.GE) has not yet been validated for the diagnosis of PHT. Our aims were to test whether 2D-SWE.GE-LS is able to evaluate CSPH, to determine the reliability criteria of the method and to compare its accuracy with that of VCTE-LS in this clinical setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS:
