We analyzed the longitudinal changes in gray-scale ultrasonography (GSUS) and power Doppler ultrasonography (PDUS) parameters and correlated them with clinical, functional, and radiologic outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA). GSUS and PDUS examinations, 44-joint disease activity score (DAS44) calculations, measurements of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein levels were performed in 68 RA patients at baseline and after 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Metacarpophalangeal joints, wrist, elbow, knee, ankle, metatarsophalangeal joints, and wrist and ankl…

BACKGROUND: This study presents the outcomes of low transcondylar fractures of the distal humerus treated by open reduction and internal fix … gle medial plate. The clinical outcome was measured with pain levels, range of motion, and the Mayo Elbow Performance Score. Radiographs at latest follow-up were assessed for union, delayed union, nonunion, and hardware failure.
RESULTS: At most recent follow-up, 11 patients had no pain, 2 had mild pain, and 1 had moderate pain. The mean Mayo Elbow Per …

OBJECTIVES: The integrity of elbow soft tissues affects radiocapitellar joint stability in the presence of bipolar radial head (RH) prostheses. This study examined the effect on radiocapitellar stability of monopolar designs versus bipolar RH prostheses in an elbow model with a surgically controlled terrible triad injury.
METHODS: In each of 8 fresh-frozen elbow specimens (4 male and 4 female), a terrible triad fracture dislocation was created through soft tissue releases, coronoid fracture, and RH resection. Radiocapitellar stability was recorded under the following 3 sets of conditions: (1)…

BACKGROUND: We reviewed the results of corrective osteotomy for cubitus varus in middle-aged patients to investigate whether it is recommended in this age group.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 20 consecutive patients who underwent 3-dimensional corrective osteotomy at an average age of 47.9 years (range, 41-55 years). The osteotomy was fixed with single plating in 8 patients and with double plating in 12. The average follow-up was 23 months (range, 18-109 months).
RESULTS: The average humerus-elbow-wrist angle improved from 21.4° (range, 15°-35°) varus to 8.7° (range, -4°-20°) valgus. Oss…

BACKGROUND: The control of shoulder-level disarticulation prostheses is significantly more difficult than that of prostheses for more distal amputations. Amputees have significant difficulties coordinating the separate functions of prosthetic shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand/hook components. The user must lock one joint at a particular position in space before subsequently moving a different joint.
METHODS: A patient with bilateral humeral disarticulations after an electrical injury underwent a novel nerve transfer procedure designed to improve the control of a myoelectric prosthesis. The med…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of limited internal fixation combined with hinged super-articular external fixator to treat type … nction returned to normal after the ulnar nerve transposition. There was no bone ischemic necrosis, elbow joint instability, or loosening of internal fixation. At last follow-up, the average range of motion of injured elbow was 105.0° in flexion, -25.0° in extension, 69.2° in pronation, and 75.6° in supination. According to Mayo elbow joint function sco …

Lateral epicondylosis is a common cause of lateral elbow pain and can lead to disability and overall diminished quality of life. Repetitive gripping and wrist extension is thought to lead to microtearing and degeneration of the extensor tendons. In general, patients with symptoms of lateral epicondylosis experience relief of symptoms with non-operative management alone. However, controversy remains concerning the role of non-surgical management and which modality facilitates the quickest recovery. Moreover, debate remains throughout the literature regarding surgical intervention and other trea…

Hypertrichosis cubiti, also named hairy elbows syndrome, is an uncommon variety of congenital, circumscribed hypertrichosis with a remarkable amount of long vellous hair localized on the extensor surfaces of the upper extremities. It may appear both as a familial or sporadic form. In most patients, it is not associated with any other physical anomalies, although short stature and other development disorders have been described. We report a case occurring sporadically in a 5-year-old girl without associated abnormalities, and with a negative family history.

To determine the efficacy of using splinting as a treatment for lateral epicondylitis (LE), a systematic review of the literature was conducted on Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), EMBASE, PEDro, and Cochrane databases using pertinent key words and phrases. Hand searches of article references were also used to ensure that as many relevant articles as possible were identified. Searches were limited to articles published in English. Articles that did not involve splinting (or terminology derivative thereof) as treatment intervention for LE were excluded.

Lateral epicondylitis is the most commonly diagnosed elbow condition and affects about 1-3% of the population at large. It produces a heavy burden of workdays lost and residual impairments. Although many treatment modalities are used, few of them rest on scientific evidence and none has been proven more effective than the others. This paucity of evidence on treatments for lateral epicondylitis may stem from several sources, including the possible self-limiting nature of the condition, the lack of pathophysiological data, the methodological shortcomings of available studies, and the existence o…
