Paraplegics standing up using multichannel FES and arm support.

The suitability of multichannel functional electrical stimulation (FES) during the standing-up manoeuvre for therapeutic home use was investigated. Two spinal cord-injured subjects (SCI) participated in the study. Ankle plantar flexors, knee extensors and hip extensors were stimulated. The amplitude of the stimulation pulses depended on the current phase of raising. The sit-to-stand process was divided into three phases by detecting characteristic events in the vertical handle reaction force. It was found that the multichannel FES did not contribute to the decrease of the arm support force whe

Spinal cord stimulation electrode design: prospective, randomized, controlled trial comparing percutaneous and laminectomy electrodes-part I: technical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical use of spinal cord stimulation for treatment of chronic intractable pain has been increasingly successful because of recent technical improvements, particularly the development of multiple-contact electrodes supported by programmable implanted pulse generators. Contemporary electrodes can be placed percutaneously in some cases and require a limited laminectomy in other cases. METHODS: We performed a prospective, randomized, controlled trial comparing two prototypical electrode designs, using a computerized system that allows direct patient interaction and quantitative

Counter-empathic pleasantness as a potential mediator of single-session HD-tDCS effects on laboratory retaliatory aggression: A randomized sham-controlled trial in healthy young adults.

Retaliatory aggression may be influenced not only by cognitive-control processes but also by counter-empathic pleasantness in response to an offender's suffering. In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study, 42 healthy young adults were randomized to real or sham Fpz-centered high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS). One participant per group withdrew, leaving 20 per group for analysis. Real stimulation was delivered at 2 mA for 25 min, whereas sham current was applied only during the first 60 s. Before and after stimulation, participants rated the pleasant

Targeted activation of human ether-à-go-go-related gene channels rescues electrical instability induced by the R56Q+/- long QT syndrome variant.

AIMS: Long QT syndrome type 2 (LQTS2) is associated with inherited variants in the cardiac human ether-à-go-go-related gene (hERG) K+ channel. However, the pathogenicity of hERG channel gene variants is often uncertain. Using CRISPR-Cas9 gene-edited hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs), we investigated the pathogenic mechanism underlying the LQTS-associated hERG R56Q variant and its phenotypic rescue by using the Type 1 hERG activator, RPR260243. METHODS AND RESULTS: The above approaches enable characterization of the unclear causative mechanism of arrhythmia in the R56Q variant (an N-ter

Activation of an efferent cholinergic pathway produces strong protection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: A vagus nerve-mediated, brain cholinergic protective mechanism activated by melanocortin peptides is operative in conditions of circulatory shock; moreover, there is anatomical evidence of dual vagal-cardiac efferent pathways in rats, which could play different roles in controlling heart function. Therefore, we investigated the role and functional mechanism of such vagal efferent pathway(s) in an experimental model of ischemic heart disease. DESIGN: Randomized experimental study. SETTING: Research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Adult Wistar rats of either sex. INTERVENTIONS: After bilate

Scalp Topography of Lower Urinary Tract Sensory Evoked Potentials.

Impaired lower urinary tract (LUT) afferents often cause LUT symptoms. Assessment of LUT afferent pathways is possible using bipolar cortical sensory evoked potential (SEP) recordings with the active electrode at the vertex during electrical stimulation in the LUT. This study aimed to investigate the topographical distribution and microstates of lower urinary tract sensory evoked potentials (LUTSEPs) using different stimulation frequencies. Ninety healthy subjects (18-36 years old, 40 women) were randomly assigned to one of five stimulation locations [bladder dome; trigone; proximal, membranou

Triggered Electrooculography for Identification of Oculomotor and Abducens Nerves during Skull Base Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Electrooculography (EOG) records eyeball movements as changes in the potential difference between the negatively charged retina and the positively charged cornea. We aimed to investigate whether reliable EOG waveforms can be evoked by electrical stimulation of the oculomotor and abducens nerves during skull base surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 18 patients who had undergone a skull base tumor surgery using EOG (11 craniotomies and seven endonasal endoscopic surgeries). Stimulation was performed at 5 Hz with a stimulus duration of 200 μs and an intensity

Denervation of gastroepiploic artery graft can reduce vasospasm.

BACKGROUND: The right gastroepiploic artery is useful as an in situ arterial graft for coronary artery bypass grafting. However, the gastroepiploic artery is more likely to cause vasospasms compared with the internal thoracic artery. We hypothesized that the cause of the spasms is the stimulation of the periarterial sympathetic nerve, because the gastroepiploic artery is classified as a muscular artery. In this study, we examined whether the spasm is reduced by removing the periarterial sympathetic nerve. METHODS: Unused parts of the gastroepiploic artery were obtained from patients who under

Effects of contraction and insulin on protein synthesis, AMP-activated protein kinase and phosphorylation state of translation factors in rat skeletal muscle.

In rat epitrochlearis skeletal muscle, contraction inhibited the basal and insulin-stimulated rates of protein synthesis by 75 and 70%, respectively, while increasing adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity. Insulin, on the other hand, stimulated protein synthesis (by 30%) and increased p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K) Thr389, 40S ribosomal protein S6 (rpS6) Ser235/236, rpS6 Ser240/244 and eukaryotic initiation factor-4E-binding protein-1 (4E-BP1) Thr37/46 phosphorylation over basal values. Electrical stimulation had no effect on mammalian target of rapamycin c

Pancreatic and extrapancreatic galanin release during sympathetic neural activation.

To address the hypothesis that the neutropeptide, galanin, functions as a sympathetic neurotransmitter in the endocrine pancreas, we sought to determine if galanin is released from pancreatic sympathetic nerves during their direct electrical stimulation in halothane-anesthetized dogs. During bilateral thoracic splanchnic nerve stimulation (BTSNS), both peripheral arterial and pancreatic venous levels of galanin-like immunoreactivity (GLIR) increased (delta at 10 min = +92 +/- 31 and +88 +/- 25 fmol/ml, respectively). Systemic infusions of synthetic galanin demonstrated that 1) the increment of

Adverse effects of non-invasive brain stimulation as a treatment for mental disorders: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mental disorders affect nearly one billion people worldwide, posing major challenges to public health. While conventional treatments like psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are effective for many patients, they are often associated with adverse effects and high non-response rates, underscoring the need for alternative approaches. Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial electric stimulation and transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation are increasingly used to treat psychiatric conditions. Although these methods show promi…

Responses of model cortical neurons to temporal interference stimulation and related transcranial alternating current stimulation modalities.

Objective.Temporal interference stimulation (TIS) was proposed as a non-invasive, focal, and steerable deep brain stimulation method. However, the mechanisms underlying experimentally-observed suprathreshold TIS effects are unknown, and prior simulation studies had limitations in the representations of the TIS electric field (E-field) and cerebral neurons. We examined the E-field and neural response characteristics for TIS and related transcranial alternating current stimulation modalities.Approach.Using the uniform-field approximation, we simulated a range of stimulation parameters in biophys

[Electrical characteristics of the granular neurons of the carp olfactory bulb].

Using the intracellular recording technique the electrical activity of the carp olfactory bulb granular cells and secondary neurons was studied. Early and late EPSP and IPSP were the synaptic responses of granular cells both to the olfactory nerve and olfactory tract electrical stimulation. The comparison of responses of the granular cells and secondary neurons led to the conclusion that the granular cells are interneurons producing post-synaptic inhibition of the secondary neurons. It was supposed that the granular neurons are excited by dendro-dendritic and reccurent-collateral pathways and

Modulation of Spinal Nociceptive Excitability by Nociceptive-Visual Interaction.

BACKGROUND: The existence of multisensory interactions between nociception and vision has recently been highlighted by showing that near visual stimuli can influence nociceptive perception. However, although such interactions have been hypothesized to serve a motor function, their effects on nociception-related motor responses have not been empirically demonstrated. The present study tested whether spinal nociceptive excitability, measured with the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR), can be modulated by the presence of dynamic visual stimuli, and whether this would be specifically the case fo

Multi-modal induction and assessment of allodynia and hyperalgesia in the human oesophagus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Experimental pain models based on single stimuli have to some degree limited visceral pain studies in humans. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of multi-modal visceral pain stimuli of the oesophagus in healthy subjects before and after induction of visceral hyperalgesia. We used a multi-modal psychophysical assessment regime and a neurophysiological method (nociceptive reflex) for the characterisation of the experimentally induced hyperalgesia. METHODS: A probe for multi-modal (cold, warm, electrical, and mechanical) visceral stimulation was posit

Electrically active biomaterials for osteochondral tissue engineering: a review.

Osteochondral tissues have limited self-healing capacity due to its avascular nature, making injuries and degenerative diseases particularly difficult to treat with conventional methods. Osteochondral tissue engineering has emerged as a promising interdisciplinary approach combining biomaterials, cells, and bioactive molecules to regenerate functional bone and cartilage. In recent years, electrically conductive materials have gained attention for their ability to mimic the electromechanical properties of native bone and cartilage and enhance cell behavior through electrical stimulation. Modulation of corticomuscular coherence by peripheral stimuli.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of peripheral afferent stimuli on the synchrony between brain and muscle activity as estimated by corticomuscular coherence (CMC). Electroencephalogram (EEG) from sensorimotor cortex and electromyogram (EMG) from two intrinsic hand muscles were recorded during a key grip motor task, and the modulation of CMC caused by afferent electrical and mechanical stimulation was measured. The particular stimuli used were graded single-pulse electrical stimuli, above threshold for perception and activating cutaneous afferents, applied to the dominan
