A ventral striatal learning signal reflecting individual differences in the success of fear extinction.

Individual differences in fear extinction learning are centrally involved in anxiety vulnerability. We here investigate individual extinction differences using a model-free, data-driven approach, by applying Latent Class Growth Modeling (LCGM) to four in-house data sets from altogether N = 234 healthy male participants. This revealed two distinct trajectory classes: fast extinguishers and slow extinguishers. This pattern was replicated in two independent public data sets (total N = 275, female and male). In a subset of the in-house samples with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data

Feedback, competition, and cooperation: Behavioral effects of gamification elements in individual and team settings.

Gamification aims to increase user motivation and engagement by incorporating game design elements into non-game contexts. This study examines how two commonly used gamification elements (progress bars and leaderboards) shape user engagement and contribution behaviors within different participation structures (individual and team-based), drawing on Self-Determination Theory and Social Interdependence Theory as interpretive frameworks. A six-condition experimental design (N = 219) was implemented on an online interaction platform (Board) designed by the researchers, comparing leaderboards, prog

Electroencephalography Microstate Instability and Clinical Outcomes in Individuals at Clinical High Risk of Psychosis.

IMPORTANCE: Clinical criteria for identifying individuals at clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR) have been established, but their predictive accuracy remains insufficient for guiding treatment decisions. Identifying reliable biomarkers associated with mechanisms of illness and treatment in individuals at CHR is therefore a central research goal. Here, we consider resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) microstates as such a potential biomarker. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether EEG microstate features are associated with future conversion to psychosis and other future clinical outcomes in

Stress and resilience: cortisol hypo-response to acute stress in non-resilient individuals.

Resilience-the outcome of effective adaptation to adversity-is a dynamic construct referring to the preservation or quick recovery of mental health in the face of significant stressors. Despite the crucial role of the acute stress response in coping with adversity, no consensus exists regarding its relationship with resilience. Inconsistent findings may be due to variability in the assessment of resilience. The present study investigates the relationship between resilience and acute stress responses by comparing resilient and non-resilient individuals in their responses to experimentally induc

Comparing your "happy" to my "happy": how to assess the individual affective space.

Emotions are of utmost relevance for everyday life and the development and maintenance of psychological disorders. Emotion theories mainly describe emotions as generalisable experiences, whereas differences in individual affective dynamics are less researched. Therefore, we endeavoured developing a tool to assess individual mental representations of emotions, aiming for a rich, yet replicable informational structure. We compared three methods: (1) A Multi-Arrangement Task (MAT), (2) Pairwise Comparisons (PC), and (3) Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) rating scales. Using a within-subjects design (

'It's a Balancing Act': A Qualitative Analysis of the Experiences of Caffeine Use in Individuals With Bipolar Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a complex and often chronic mood disorder that can cause significant distress and disruption to everyday life. The condition often requires lifelong treatment and self-management. Caffeine is a lifestyle behaviour that could be useful in self-management alongside traditional treatments, but further research is needed to explore the relationship between this lifestyle behaviour and its potential significance on affective state. METHODS: Individuals with BD (N = 20) took part in qualitative semi-structured interviews, engaging in discussion about their per

Demoralization and Illness-Related Communication Among Individuals With Cardiac Disease: A Dyadic Analysis.

Chronic cardiac illness often places substantial psychological and relational strain on patients and their intimate partners. Demoralization, a state of hopelessness, low coping efficacy, and perceived incompetence, can emerge in both partners, particularly when illness-related communication is ineffective. Understanding how couples communicate about the illness is therefore critical for supporting each partner's mental health. This study examined how illness-related communication is associated with demoralization in couples in which the male partner has a cardiac disease. Specifically, we inv

Mental Disorders After Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Implantation in Young Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Increasing use of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has raised concerns about psychological distress in young adults. We evaluated the risk of incident mental disorders after CIED implantation. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance database, we identified individuals aged 20 to 39 years who underwent health checkups in 2009 to 2012. Those receiving a new CIED within 4 years were included, and controls were selected by 1:5 matching for age, sex, and index year. The primary outcome was a composite of newly diagnosed mental disorders (mood disorders and anx

Integrating Lab- and Field-Based Approaches to Decipher Individuals' Response to Anthropogenic Change.

The global expansion of human activities increasingly exposes wild animals to novel, potentially threatening conditions. Consistent behavioural responses to perceived risk may be detrimental to wildlife, either by limiting foraging opportunities or by overexposing them to lethal hazards. We examine the relationship between risk responses, movement patterns and survival in fan-tailed ravens (Corvus rhipidurus) inhabiting Israel's Dead Sea coastline. We found consistent individual differences assessed through controlled laboratory assays (novel food, objects, environment and foraging near humans

A multi-modal dataset for insect biodiversity with imagery and DNA at the trap and individual level.

Insects comprise millions of species, many experiencing severe population declines under environmental and habitat changes. High-throughput approaches are crucial for accelerating our understanding of insect diversity, with DNA barcoding and high-resolution imaging showing strong potential for automatic taxonomic classification. However, most image-based approaches rely on individual specimen data, unlike the unsorted bulk samples collected in large-scale ecological surveys. We present the Mixed Arthropod Sample Segmentation and Identification (MassID45) dataset for training automatic classifi

Worsened multitasking performance with simulated hearing protection correlates with individuals' choice not to "wear" it.

INTRODUCTION: Workers' reasons for not wearing hearing protection devices (HPDs) largely come from performance issues that occur while wearing. Research has shown that such complaints are justified in regard to auditory situational awareness (e.g., speech comprehension), but other aspects of work performance (e.g., multitasking ability) are rarely characterized. Further, the relationship between HPD-related performance worsening and the choice to wear an HPD has not been objectively characterized. We address both gaps in the literature here. METHODS: Participants were presented with moving ob

Influences of the built environment in physical activity participation in individuals with disabilities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity remains a critical public health concern for individuals with disabilities, who often encounter environmental and structural barriers to participation. Although research on built environment characteristics and physical activity (PA) has expanded, evidence specific to individuals with disabilities remains fragmented and requires clearer conceptual integration. This systematic review synthesises evidence on built environment characteristics associated with PA participation among individuals with disabilities. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across

The School-to-Guardian Pipeline: Understanding the Medical and Social Implications for Individuals with Significant Disabilities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As children move from being a minor to 18 and over as adults, the decision-making power shifts from the parent to the now adult child. That is unless legal guardianship is sought. One of the first encounters parents begin to really process the ramifications of this change is at school during individualized education program (IEP) transition planning meetings which begin for students with disabilities as early as 14 years in some states and school systems and required by federal law to occur by 16 years old. Local education agencies, or school districts, are required to infor

Dynamic processes in narcissism and affect across Chinese and American individuals: A registered report.

Recent research has examined the state dynamics of narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability and of positive and negative affect, yet few studies have directly linked the two conceptually similar constructs or addressed their conceptual overlap, especially beyond Western samples. In this study, we used a newly collected Chinese sample (N = 594, observations = 26,802) and an existing American data set (N = 862, observations = 36,631) to investigate the dynamics of narcissism and affect in daily life. Using dynamic structural equation modeling, we characterized these dynamics through key indica

Physiological and molecular effects of individual and mixtures of drugs of abuse in Crassostrea virginica larvae.

Drugs of abuse (DAs) are increasingly detected in surface waters, yet their effects on marine organisms remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the impacts of environmentally relevant concentrations (100 and 1000 ng L⁻¹) of cannabinol, codeine, and methamphetamine, individually and in mixtures, on the growth and development of Crassostrea virginica larvae. Eight-day exposures significantly reduced larval survival, impaired growth, and altered swimming behavior, with mixtures producing the strongest effects. At 1000 ng L⁻¹ , cumulative survival reached zero in mixture and cannabinol grou

Gait Alterations Due to DCC Gene Variants in Individuals with Congenital Mirror Movements.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Mirror Movement Syndrome (CMMS) involves involuntary movements on one side of the body while voluntary movements are performed on the other side. They disrupt left-right coordination and can be caused by a pathogenic variant in the DCC gene. CMMS have been extensively studied in the upper limb, but its impact on lower limb during gait in humans is unclear. OBJECTIVES: Determine the impact of CMMS on locomotor patterns in individuals with a DCC pathogenic variant. METHODS: The gait pattern of seven individuals with a DCC pathogenic variant and ten healthy controls was a
