Hookworm infections in man, especially in children, are one of the leading causes of iron-deficiency anemia resulting directly from intestinal capillary blood loss following the feeding activities of fourth-stage (L4) larva and adult worms. We report a 12% incidence of adenovirus infections among 532 recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) from January 1986 through March 1997. The median time from day of stem cell infusion to first positive culture was 41 days. Recipients of allogeneic stem cells, as opposed to autologous stem cell recipients, were more likely to have a culture positive for adenovirus (16% vs. 3%; P<.0001). Pediatric patients were also more likely than adults to have a positive culture (23% vs. 9%; P<.0001). Among stem cell recipients with partially matched related donors, pediatric recipients app…

OBJECTIVE: To describe a nosocomial infection surveillance in a cardiology and thoracic diseases hospital in Northern Mexico during its init … site of infection, surgical wound infection were the most common (1.14), followed by urinary tract infections (1.08), and bacteremia (0.72). However, when we grouped bacteremias and other catheter related infections, this intravascular access related infections were the most frequent (1.73). Gram positive organisms were most commonly isolated in nosocomial …

Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) is responsible for an average of 40% of all cases of bacterial meningitis in Germany. Cerebrospinal fluids, blood cultures, throat swabs and scratches, aspirations and biopsies of the skin rash are appropriate materials for the diagnosis of meningococcal disease. The materials should reach the laboratory without delay. Since 1993, the incidence of meningococcal disease in Germany is less than 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants. The case fatality rate is about 10%. Most cases of meningococcal disease occur in the first quarter of the year. Almost half of all i

Mycobacterium haemophilum is an emerging pathogen in immunocompromised patients. We report the clinical and histologic findings of 16 skin biopsies from 11 patients with culture-proven infections by M. haemophilum. The patients had leukemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Ten of them had undergone bone marrow transplantation. When the skin biopsy specimens were taken, a portion of the skin was simultaneously submitted to a microbiology laboratory for cultures. The remaining skin was processed routinely. Acid-fast bacilli were found in 11 of 16 lesions. The number of histologically detectable organi…

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae O1, Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella species, and Shigella species are major causes of morbidity and death in diarrheal disease. More recently recognized pathogens are V. cholerae O139 and enterohemorrhagic E. coli. In addition to this, several presumptive virulence factors have been identified in diarrheagenic E. coli and in other species. To confirm these as virulence factors we need good diagnostic tools and good epidemiological studies. These are of vital importance to create vaccines for diarrheal diseases.

Treating urinary tract infections at the source: Urinary tract infection is a common problem in hospitals, particularly among patients who require long-term management with indwelling urinary catheters. A new Foley catheter, made of silicon imbedded with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, shows a 10-fold reduction in UTI within three days of use. Its maker claims hospitals can save $68,000 to $438,000 per 1,000 catheters.

Nosocomial urinary tract infection is the most common type of sepsis in the post-surgical patient. This paper presents our experience with 218 nosocomial urinary infections (34.93% of our postoperative infections) which complicated the postoperative course of 1002 (21.75%) urethral catheterized patients out of a total of 5950 (3.6%) operated on and under study individuals. Thus we found that urethral catheterization is the most important risk factor for post-surgery urinary infections. Moreover, in our series the postoperative urinary tract sepsis bacteriology is dominated (> 95% of cases) by …

UNLABELLED: A nosocomial infection is determined by plenty of factors, such as a kind of flora and its virulence, hygiene standard, efficacy of material and instruments sterilisation, technical terms of work organisation in hospital, and other staff and patient related factors. The aim of this study was to establish the risk factors of postoperative wound infection related to patient. The material was 1527 surgically treated patients in the 3rd Surgical Department of the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University during one year. 66 patients with wounds of the head and 7 patients who die

BACKGROUND: Disseminated fungal infections are a major problem in high risk neonates. Conventional antifungal agents are often unsatisfactory and have a high incidence of severe adverse effects.
METHODS: We administered liposomal encapsulated amphotericin B (AmBisome), which is an alternative to conventional amphotericin B, to 40 preterm (mean birth weight, 1090 +/- 313.6 g; mean gestational age, 28.35 +/- 2.13 weeks) and 4 full term (mean birth weight, 3080 +/- 118 g; mean gestational age, 39 +/- 0.7 weeks) newborn infants with a severe fungal infection.
RESULTS: Candida albicans was the mo…

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early infectious complications following autologous transplantation in haematological patients … l infection. No major differences were found between the two groups in distribution or incidence of infections. This study indicates that the use of peripheral blood stem cells results in faster engraftment and shorter hospital stay, whereas the effect on the incidence of early infections seems to be unaffected.

The parasitic infections (Toxocara can is, Trichinella spiralis) are characterized by general and local symptoms including fever, muscle pain and swelling. The question was asked whether the muscle changes that occur due to larva migrans give rise to the autoimmune response. The presence of antistriational antibodies (aStrAbs) was determined in the following groups of patients: group 1--66 patients with toxocariasis and the presence of anti-Toxocara antibodies, group 2--22 patients suspected of Toxocara canis infection without anti-Toxocara antibodies, group 3--20 patients with active trichine…

The filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Onchocerca volvulus represent major public health problems in the Tropics. Effective diagnosis of infection with these parasites is required both for administration of drugs to infected individuals and for monitoring of control programs. However parasitological diagnosis is associated with a number of problems including frequently inadequate sensitivity, long pre-patency of infection and inconvenience for patients. For these reasons there has been considerable effort expended in developing other forms of diagnosis, in particular im

BACKGROUND: Bacterial skin infections are common clinical problems encountered in most fields of clinical medicine. Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococci are common invaders of eczematous, traumatised or immunocompromised skin. Advances in pharmacology have introduced a wide array of new antibiotics into the physician's armamentarium, but the rising incidence of bacterial resistance continues to be a problem. A retrospective study was carried out on 331 patients at the National Skin Centre, Singapore, to establish the causes of common primary and secondary pyodermas, as well as to det…

In the first part of our review, we discussed the general evaluation and clinical presentation of the various hepatic infections occurring in patients with AIDS. In addition, we focused on specific hepatic parenchymal infections. In this article, we will discuss the major clinical syndromes arising from opportunistic infections affecting the gallbladder (acalculous cholecystitis), biliary tree (AIDS-cholangiopathy), and pancreas (pancreatitis). Acalculous cholecystitis can develop in patients with AIDS who have not experienced the severe precipitating physiologic stresses normally required in …

Infections of the liver and biliary tract are common during the course of AIDS. A variety of viral, bacterial, fungal, and other opportunistic infections can present with hepatobiliary involvement as either the primary site of infection or secondary to a disseminated process. Coinfection with hepatitis B and C are particularly common due to the shared means of transmission of these viruses with HIV. The typical presenting features of hepatobiliary infections are right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain and abnormal liver function tests. Initial evaluation should include an RUQ ultrasonogram, which will…
