BACKGROUND: With apparent declines in malaria worldwide during the last decade and more widespread use of malaria rapid diagnostic tests, healthcare workers in low-resource areas face a growing proportion of febrile patients without malaria. We sought to describe current knowledge and identify information gaps of the etiology severe febrile illness in low-and middle-income countries.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic review of studies conducted in low-and-middle income countries 1980-2013 that prospectively assessed consecutive febrile patients admitted to hospital using rigorou

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis E is an emerging disease in developed countries with an increasing incidence. In developed countries, HEV genotype 3 prevails as a zoonotic disease carried by wild boars or pigs, which usually causes asymptomatic infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: An asymptomatic HBsAg carrier was tested regularly at a German university hospital and showed no signs of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) activity. At a routine visit, elevated aminotransferases were detected while HBV DNA remained low and the patient was clinically asymptomatic. The laboratory signs of acute hepatitis resolved spontane

INTRODUCTION: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a serious hyperinflammatory condition associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Usually, the diagnosis of MIS-C is made by criteria defined by international organizations, which include specific clinical features, laboratory findings, and evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We hereby present a case series of three children. The objective of this case series, involving chart review of medical records of children admitted with MIS-C, is to emphasize that the features of MIS-C may ov

INTRODUCTION: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common viral infection seen in newborns. The major route of transmission for acquired human cytomegalovirus infection is breast milk from mothers who are HCMV seropositive to the infants. Thus, a rapid, economical, and simple method to perform HCMV test in breast milk is crucial and necessary for preventing acquired HCMV infection, especially in underdeveloped regions with limited laboratory resources.
METHODS: In this study, an effective technique for the detection of HCMV was constructed by combining multienzyme isothermal rapid amplifi

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection can rarely present with severe vascular pathologies, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). These events are seldom documented in the literature as complications of primary VZV infection in adults. We present the case of a 52-year-old Caucasian male patient with chickenpox complicated by DVT and PE, which developed despite thrombectomy and anticoagulation. Laboratory analysis revealed elevated antiphospholipid antibodies. Although the patient was discharged home after clinical improvement, antiphospholipid antibodies remained elev

Toxocara spp. are parasitic nematodes responsible for human toxocariasis, a common zoonotic helminth infection. The five main features of human toxocariasis are the classical ocular toxocariasis and visceral larva migrans syndrome, followed by covert toxocariasis, common toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis. The diagnosis of toxocariasis is feasible by considering clinical symptoms, anamnestic history and serology laboratory results; however, serological criteria cannot be used to distinguish active Toxocara infection from past exposure, which is an area of much discussion in clinical practice.

Aeromonas species are emerging human enteric pathogens. However, systematic analysis of Aeromonas species infection in human gastroenteritis in comparison with other enteric bacterial pathogens in the Australian population is lacking. Here we analysed the isolation of Aeromonas species and other bacterial pathogens in five consecutive years (2015-2019) from 375,842 stool samples of patients with gastroenteritis in a large Australian diagnostic laboratory and identified a subset (48 isolates) of Aeromonas isolates to species level, using multilocus phylogenetic analysis. Aeromonas species were
