Understanding Dying Concerns in Parents With Advanced Cancer With Dependent Children for Their Coparent: A Phenomenological Study.

Parents with advanced cancer and their dependent children experience high psychological distress, decreased quality of life, and decreased family functioning due to cancer-related concerns. Dying concerns are defined as fluctuating thoughts or feelings that are conscious or unconscious about an anticipated and approaching death that is attributed to a palliative/terminal diagnosis. This study used Gadamer's phenomenological approach to gain a shared understanding of the perspectives of the parents with advanced cancer about dying concerns, family life before and after advanced cancer diagnosis

Chronic psychological stress aggravates psoriasis-like skin inflammation via overactivation of β2-adrenoceptor and nuclear factor kappa B pathways.

The relationship between psoriasis severity and psychological stress has been described in several studies. However, the mechanism by which chronic stress exacerbates psoriasis is not completely understood. This study aimed at investigating whether chronic psychological stress can aggravate psoriasis-like skin inflammation. Mice were subjected to a restraint stress model and topically treated with imiquimod (IMQ). Differentiated human keratinocytes were treated with high epinephrine levels and IMQ in vitro. Stress aggravated macroscopic features and the increase in epidermal thickness induced

Reframing postconcussional syndrome as an interface disorder of neurology, psychiatry and psychology.

Persistent symptoms following a minor head injury can cause significant morbidity, yet the underlying mechanisms for this are poorly understood. The shortcomings of the current terminology that refer to non-specific symptom clusters is discussed. This update considers the need for a multi-dimensional approach for the heterogenous mechanisms driving persistent symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury. Relevant pathophysiology is discussed to make the case for mild traumatic brain injury to be conceptualized as an interface disorder spanning neurology, psychiatry and psychology. The relevance

Social comparison processes and catastrophising in fibromyalgia: A path analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to coping strategies, social comparison may play a role in illness adjustment. However, little is known about the role of contrast and identification in social comparison in adaptation to fibromyalgia. AIM: To evaluate through a path analysis in a sample of fibromyalgia patients, the association between identification and contrast in social comparison, catastrophising and specific health outcomes (fibromyalgia illness impact and psychological distress). MATERIAL AND METHOD: 131 Spanish fibromyalgia outpatients (mean age: 50.15, SD = 11.1) filled out a questionnaire.

Patients experiences of maintaining mental well-being and hope within motor neuron disease: a thematic synthesis.

Research is required that can synthesize the experiences of patients with Motor Neuron Disease (MND). One value of being able to do this is to understand the psychological experiences and processes involved in maintaining mental well-being and hope. A qualitative thematic synthesis of studies was undertaken. Studies were electronically searched from inception until June 2014. Twenty-nine studies with 342 (175 male) unique individuals with MND were identified. Five themes were identified: (1)The effects of the disease on interactions, relationships, roles and meaningful activities, (2) Response

Acute stress enhances contact dermatitis by promoting nuclear factor-kappaB DNA-binding activity and interleukin-18 expression in mice.

Psychological stress adversely affects the immune system, and aggravates various skin diseases, such as psoriasis, alopecia areata and atopic dermatitis. However, the precise underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. The goal of this study was to use a murine restraint stress model to determine the mechanisms by which psychological stress modulates immune response in contact dermatitis. In the present study, mice were sensitized and challenged on the skin with 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene. Acute restraint stress was administrated to healthy or sensitized mice before challenge, and nuclear fac

Don't fence me in: managing psychological well being for elite performance horses.

This article posits that stereotypical behavior patterns and the overall psychological well being of today's performance horse could be substantially enhanced with care that acknowledges the relationship between domesticated horses and their forerunners. Feral horses typically roam in stable, social groups over large grazing territories, spending 16-20 hr per day foraging on mid- to poor-quality roughage. In contrast, today's elite show horses live in relatively small stalls, eat a limited-but rich-diet at specific feedings, and typically live in social isolation. Although the horse has been d

While the greater part of the patients that we rehabilitate like to speak again in a carried and loud voice; some of them more or less clearly show their reluctance to "amplify" their voice and prefer keeping on with speaking in a conversational tone, even though this appears to be inappropriate in a professional context. Listening attentively to what they can say about it enables us to understand that their reluctance stems from the fact that they find their voice a particularly valuable possession. Hence their anxiety to save their voice, as if using it may also cause its exhaustion. Of cour

Psychosocial adaptation in juvenile rheumatic disease: a controlled evaluation.

Juvenile rheumatic diseases are serious chronic illnesses potentially capable of disrupting a child's development and functioning. This study examined the psychosocial functioning of 43 children with severe rheumatic disease as compared to that of 52 children with a milder or inactive form of rheumatic disease. Both patient groups also were compared to 93 healthy children from demographically matched families. Data were obtained from parent reports, from physician evaluation, and, for children who were old enough, from self-reports. The severe patient group showed more parent-reported psycholo

Gender-based violence against female academics in Chile: organizational vulnerability, underreporting, and work-related impact.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined, in an integrated way, the intersection of contract stability and rank and their relationship to (non) reporting and labor consequences, particularly in specific contexts, In Gender-based violence (GBV) in higher education. This study examined whether contractual conditions, academic rank, disciplinary unit affiliation, institutional trust, and cultural coping norms are associated with experiences of gender-based violence, reporting of such violence, and perceived impact on academic work among female academics in Chile. METHODS: An analytic cross-sectiona

Stress and the gut-brain axis: Cognitive performance, mood state, and biomarkers of blood-brain barrier and intestinal permeability following severe physical and psychological stress.

BACKGROUND: Physical and psychological stress alter gut-brain axis activity, potentially causing intestinal barrier dysfunction that may, in turn, induce cognitive and mood impairments through exacerbated inflammation and blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. These interactions are commonly studied in animals or artificial laboratory environments. However, military survival training provides an alternative and unique human model for studying the impacts of severe physical and psychological stress on the gut-brain axis in a realistic environment. PURPOSE: To determine changes in intestinal b

Model Systems infrastructure of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG): toward an integrated, mechanism-based framework for mental health research.

Mental health is fragile and disorders are highly prevalent arising from complex interactions between genetic, developmental, psychological, social and environmental factors. The key mechanisms underlying resilience, vulnerability factors, brain repair systems, and recovery remain poorly understood, hindering the development of effective prevention and personalized treatment. The German Center for Mental Health (Deutsches Zentrum für Psychische Gesundheit, DZPG) addresses these challenges through a nationwide, interdisciplinary research network that integrates basic science with translational

What Makes Adolescents Defend Others Against Cyberhate? Insights From the Normative Social Behavior, Social Learning, and Planned Behavior Theories.

Most adolescents experience cyberhate primarily as bystanders. Understanding their behavior, particularly their defending behaviors, is crucial to mitigate the phenomenon and its negative effects. While prior studies have explored factors influencing these responses, further research is needed to understand how these factors interact within robust theoretical frameworks. To address this gap, this study examined adolescents' defending behaviors to cyberhate through three psychological theories: (1) the Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB; social norms); (2) Social Learning Theory (SLT; so

The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale: Updated and extended construct validation in community samples using a newly constructed German version.

The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS) is a an economical, widely used self-report measure of vulnerable narcissism. Developed and mostly used as a unidimensional scale, previous structural examinations suggest two correlated dimensions, one emphasizing hypersensitive/neurotic aspects and the other highlighting egocentric/antagonistic aspects of vulnerable narcissism. The few extant factor analyses of the HSNS, however, differ profoundly in their methodological approach, the resulting item-to-factor assignment, and lack a thorough validation of the two putative subscales. To fill these gap

Using Field Based Data to Model Sprint Track Cycling Performance.

Cycling performance models are used to study rider and sport characteristics to better understand performance determinants and optimise competition outcomes. Performance requirements cover the demands of competition a cyclist may encounter, whilst rider attributes are physical, technical and psychological characteristics contributing to performance. Several current models of endurance-cycling enhance understanding of performance in road cycling and track endurance, relying on a supply and demand perspective. However, they have yet to be developed for sprint-cycling, with current athlete prepar

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome: The evolving landscape, animal models and future perspectives.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is a debilitating condition of unknown etiology characterized by persistent pelvic pain with lower urinary tract symptoms and comprises a wide variety of potentially clinically useful phenotypes with different possible etiologies. Current clinicopathological and genomic evidence suggests that interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome should be categorized by the presence or absence of Hunner lesions, rather than by clinical phenotyping based on symptomatology. The Hunner lesion subtype is a distinct inflammatory disease with proven bladder etiology
