Length-dependent motions of SARS-CoV-2 frameshifting RNA pseudoknot and alternative conformations suggest avenues for frameshifting suppression

Abstract Conserved SARS-CoV-2 RNA regions of critical biological functions define excellent targets for anti-viral therapeutics against Covid-19 variants. One such region is the frameshifting element (FSE), responsible for correct translation of viral polyproteins. Here, we analyze molecular-dynamics motions of three FSE conformations, discovered by graph-theory analysis, and associated mutants designed by graph-based inverse folding: two distinct 3-stem H-type pseudoknots and a 3-way junction. We find that the prevalent H-type pseudoknot in literature adopts ring-like conformations, which in …

A planar piezoelectric motor of two dimensional XY motions driven by one cross-shaped piezoelectric unit: A new principle.

We present a two-degree-of-freedom piezoelectric motor, which is driven by a simple cross-shaped piezo unit. Here, not only the structure of high novelty and simplicity but also the working principle is new. The cross-shaped piezo unit is sandwiched between top and bottom guiding plates with roughly equal pressing forces applied between the four free ends of the piezo unit and the plates. The working principle is as follows: A pair of opposite arms of the piezo unit quickly and simultaneously expand and contract periodically in the X direction, which results in a vanishing total friction force

Is there an association between joint range of motion and muscle strength in young female dancers? And, does it depend on the effects of age and menarche?

Aiming to determine the association between joint range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength; and, the effect of age and menarche on those two factors; 132 pre-and post-menarche dancers, aged 12-14 years were assessed for joint ROM and for muscle strength at the hip, knee and ankle and foot joints. En-pointe ROM was significantly correlated with ankle plantar-flexors' (r = -.184) and with ankle dorsiflexors' muscle strength (r = -.221). Hip external rotation ROM was significantly correlated with knee extensors' strength (r = -.263). Pre-menarche dancers had higher joint ROM compared with post-m…

Drop Jumping on Sand Is Characterized by Lower Power, Higher Rate of Force Development and Larger Knee Joint Range of Motion.

Plyometric training on sand is suggested to result in advanced performance in vertical jumping. However, limited information exists concerning the biomechanics of drop jumps (DJ) on sand. The purpose of the study was to compare the biomechanical parameters of DJs executed on rigid (RIGID) and sand (SAND) surface. Sixteen high level male beach-volleyball players executed DJ from 40 cm on RIGID and SAND. Force- and video-recordings were analyzed to extract the kinetic and kinematic parameters of the DJ. Results of paired-samples t-tests revealed that DJ on SAND had significantly (p < 0.05) lower

Acute changes in passive stiffness of the individual hamstring muscles induced by resistance exercise: effects of contraction mode and range of motion.

PURPOSE: Recent studies raise an interesting possibility that resistance exercise also decreases passive muscle stiffness, as does stretching exercise. However, little is known about how program variables of resistance exercise acutely influence muscle stiffness. We aimed to examine the acute changes in passive stiffness of the individual hamstring muscles after resistance exercises using different combinations of contraction modes and ranges of motion (ROMs). METHODS: Thirteen healthy young male participants performed three sessions of resistance exercises that comprised stiff-leg deadlift w…

Effects of Scooping Mobilization and Muscle Energy Technique on Pain and Range of Motion in Post-fracture Elbow Stiffness: A Case Report.

Olecranon fractures are breaks in the elbow's bony tip. One of the three bones that come together to form the elbow joint is the ulna, which … soft tissue involvement. Physiotherapeutic treatment assists in pain relief, extending the range of motion, and quick healing. Early intervention after open reduction and internal fixation reduces post-fracture stiffening. The readership of the research study is intended to be informed regarding the various treatments available for elbow extensor lag and …

Effectiveness of ultrasound-guided fascia hydrorelease on the coracohumeral ligament in patients with global limitation of the shoulder range of motion: a pilot study.

We conducted a prospective single-arm interventional study of the treatment efficacy of ultrasound-guided fascia hydrorelease (US-FHR) on the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) of patients with global limitation of shoulder range of motion (ROM) without local inflammation. The primary outcome was the change in passive ROM (pROM) of external rotation (ER) after first US-FHR. Secondary outcomes included the change in pROM of other directions from baseline, the pain visual analogue scale (pVAS) at the timepoints after each procedure (first, second US-FHR and rehabilitation) as well as the change in the…

The effect of range of motion simulated with a patient-specific three-dimensional simulation analysis on dislocation after total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Dislocation continues to be a common complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Although previous studies of computed simulation analysis investigated the range of motion (ROM), it is unclear whether the ROM before impingement simulated using computed tomography-based 3-dimensional simulation analysis (simulated ROM) is related to dislocation after THA. It is also unclear what angles are required in computed simulation analyses for stable hips after THA. In this study, we compared the simulated ROM in patients with and without dislocation. METHODS: 16 patients with poste…

Ability of Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction to Overcome Lateral Patellar Motion in the Presence of Trochlear Flattening: A Cadaveric Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is an established operative procedure to restore medial restraining force in patients with patellar instability. In the setting of a shallow sulcus, it is unclear whether an isolated MPFL reconstruction is sufficient to restore patellofemoral stability. HYPOTHESIS: Progressively increasing the sulcus angle would have an adverse effect on the ability of an MPFL reconstruction to restrain lateral patellar motion. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Seven fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees were harvested and prepa…

A novel use of inertial sensors to measure the craniocervical flexion range of motion associated to the craniocervical flexion test: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The craniocervical flexion test (CCFT) is recommended when examining patients with neck pain related conditions and as a deep cervical retraining exercise option. During the execution of the CCFT the examiner should visually assess that the amount of craniocervical flexion range of motion (ROM) progressively increases. However, this task is very subjective. The use of inertial wearable sensors may be a user-friendly option to measure and objectively monitor the ROM. The objectives of our study were (1) to measure craniocervical flexion range of motion (ROM) associated with each sta…

The Effect That Induced Rider Asymmetry Has on Equine Locomotion and the Range of Motion of the Thoracolumbar Spine When Ridden in Rising Trot.

There is a paucity of evidence on the effect that rider asymmetry has on equine locomotion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rider asymmetry on equine locomotion by using a novel approach to induce rider asymmetry. Ten nonlame horses were recruited for this study. Joint center markers were used to capture 2D kinematics (Quintic Biomechanics) of the horse and rider and horses were equipped with seven inertial sensors positioned at the fifth (T5) and eighteenth (T18) thoracic vertebrae, third lumbar (L3) vertebra, tubera sacrale (TS), and left and right tubera coxae. Rider asy…

Exploring the Participant-Related Determinants of Simulator Sickness in a Physical Motion Car Rollover Simulation as Measured by the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire.

Physical motion driving simulators serve as a valuable research and training tool. Since many simulator participants suffer from simulator sickness (SS), we aimed to gain a better understanding of participant-related variables that may influence its incidence and severity. The study involved a 2-min mobile-platform car rollover simulation conducted in a group of 100 healthy adult participants. SS was measured with the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire immediately before and after the simulation. We investigated how the symptomatology of SS varies with gender, as well as with participants' previ…

Intrarater and Interrater Reliability of a Passive Shoulder Flexion Range of Motion Measurement for Latissimus Dorsi Flexibility in Young Competitive Swimmers.

CONTEXT: The latissimus dorsi plays a major role in generating the propulsive force during swimming. In addition, stiffness of this muscle may result in altered stroke biomechanics and predispose swimmers to shoulder pain. Measuring the flexibility of the latissimus dorsi can be of interest to reduce injury. However, the reliability of such measurement has not yet been investigated in competitive swimmers. OBJECTIVE: To assess the within-session intrarater and interrater reliability of a passive shoulder flexion range of motion measurement for latissimus dorsi flexibility in competitive swimm…
