Hypercontractile cardiac states simulating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) or idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS) has been defined as an autosomal dominant myocardial disease characterized by specific physical findings, echocardiographic features, asymmetric septal hypertrophy and disordered myocardial architecture. Echocardiographic and scintiphotographic studies failed to reveal evidence of asymmetric septal hypertrophy in four patients with systolic anterior movement of the mitral valve and the typical ausculatory and peripheral pulse abnormalities characteristic of HCM. Postmortem examimination in one patient demons

[Analysis of unconditioned reflexes in light of the theory of dominance].

After bilateral ablation of prefrontal and premotor areas of the brain in dogs, considerable changes of the "spontaneous" and unconditioned activity occurred: the phenomenon of squeezing through narrow spaces, the reflex of resistance against restriction of movements, the disturbances of sexual reflexes, the feigned aggression, etc. These reflex actions acquire features of the dominant. Seeking for food, when carrying out instrumental conditioned reflexes, also manifests features of the dominant. The pathological dominant is suggested to be a result of disorder in normal interrelationship betw

Is faciobrachial dystonic seizure a misnomer? A case report of atypical leg-predominant tonic-dystonic attacks in LGI1-associated encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Antibody‑mediated encephalitis due to leucine‑rich glioma‑inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a frequent cause of immune‑responsive paroxysm … Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for autoimmune causes in late‑onset paroxysmal movement disorders, as prompt immunotherapy can prevent falls, reduce morbidity, and significantly alter disease course. Recognition of serum‑positive, imaging‑negative LGI1 autoimmunity is particularly important, as such presentations may lack common cognitive or lim …

Foreign accent syndrome as a developmental motor speech disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) is a relatively rare motor speech disorder in which the pronunciation of a patient is perceived by listeners of the same language community as distinctly foreign. FAS has been well documented in adult patients with etiologically heterogeneous, though mostly vascular brain lesions affecting the motor speech network of the language dominant hemisphere. In addition, reports exist of adult patients in whom FAS was due to a psychiatric illness. Although FAS has been reported in children, such accounts are rare and have remained largely anecdotal in that t

Mortality and facial dyskinesia.

In 1965 a psychiatric in-patient population was surveyed for the prevalence of facial dyskinesia. The present investigation reports on their survival time. Among male and female patients with functional disorders (mostly schizophrenia) there was a strong association between moderate or severe facial dyskinesia and shortened survival, but no clinical factors were found to explain this. Mild facial dyskinesia in functional disorders was not associated with reduced life expectancy and may be attributable to the general effects of ageing rather than to a specific pathological process. Among patien

[Studies on alcohol embryopathy (author's transl)].

Data from pediatric, neurological, psychiatric and psychological examinations of 71 children suffering from alcoholembryopathy (AE) are reported. In comparison to a matched control group history revealed an increased rate of developmental retardation during the neonatal period and the toddler age. Besides the frequently described morphological characteristics neurological examinations frequently revealed deficits of fine motor coordination. Psychiatric examinations led to various symptoms indicating a marked psychoorganic syndrome. Impairment of cognitive functions was detected by psychologica

Cerebral lateralization and personality style.

Hysterical and obsessive-compulsive style subjects, as determined by a modified Rorschach test and the Wechslar Adult Intelligence Scale Comprehension subtest, were questioned in a face-to-face format where lateral eye movements were surreptitiously observed. Only right-handed subjects were used. It has been argued that lateral eye movements index immediate hemispheric activation after questions--the first such eye movement being a direction opposite to the putatively activated hemisphere. There was significantly more left-looking among the hysterical subjects than among the obsessive-compulsi

Prevalence and associated factors of developmental coordination disorder in primary school children.

Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is one of the most frequently observed movement disorders in childhood, yet data on its prevalence are still unclear. This two-stage epidemiological study aims to determine the prevalence of DCD in children between 6 and 10 years of age according to the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5). In the first stage, the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ'07) were given to primary school students. In the second stage, clinicians conducted psychiatric interviews with children who had an…

Modulation of neural circuits by melatonin in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders are two broad categories of neurological disorders characterized by progressive impairments in movement and cognitive functions within the central and peripheral nervous systems, and have emerged as a significant cause of mortality. Oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neurotransmitter imbalances are recognized as prominent pathogenic factors contributing to cognitive deficits and neurobehavioral anomalies. Consequently, preventing neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases has surfaced as a pivotal challenge in contemporary public heal

Risk of dementia and psychiatric or sleep disorders after diagnosis of adrenal adenomas: a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Adrenal adenomas are commonly encountered in clinical practice. To date, population-based data on their impact on cognition, ment … rders [1.5 (1.1-1.9)], hypersomnias [2.1 (1.0-4.2)], parasomnias [2.1 (1.0-4.2)], and sleep-related movement disorders [1.5 (1.0-2.1)], but not dementia. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with adenomas demonstrate a higher incidence of psychiatric and sleep disorders, possibly due to the underlying subtle increase in cortisol secretion.

Hystero-epilepsy in the Tuesday Lessons and NMDA receptor function: A hypothesis for dissociative disorder.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis patients demonstrate characteristic multistage progression and movement disorders, which are analogous to hystero-epilepsy in Jean-Martin Charcot's Tuesday Lessons. First, based on a review of the Tuesday Lessons recorded by Charcot's pupils, we hypothesized that there were patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis among those diagnosed with hystero-epilepsy in the nineteenth century. We found acute-onset multiple neuropsychiatric manifestations resembling anti-NMDAR encephalitis among patients with hystero-epilepsy. Patients with drug withdr…
