Evaluating the patient with chest pain: the value of a comprehensive history.

Chest pain is one of the most common presenting symptoms in healthcare settings and one of the most difficult diagnostic challenges. A comprehensive history is the cornerstone of evaluation and diagnosis and one of the most important skills in distinguishing among the many causes of chest pain. Because the differential diagnosis for chest pain ranges from conditions as minor as muscle strain to life-threatening conditions, such as an acute myocardial infarction or dissecting thoracic aortic aneurysm, the advanced practice nurse must quickly and systematically assess the patient.

Chlamydial infections in women.

The impractical isolation procedures available to the general provider of women's health services make diagnosis difficult and often one of exclusion. Looking at the presence of antichlamydial antibodies in cervical secretions may be a more practical detector of infection. More research needs to be carried on in the area of isolation techniques. More importantly, nurse clinicians/practitioners need to be aware of the necessity of treating NGU contacts. As with many conditions, the asymptomatic carrier is the most important link in the control of the disease. Awareness of the potential of these

Neonatal records and the computer.

To use a combined single document clinical case sheet/computer record which can form the basic document for a life medical record is a practical proposition. With adequate briefing doctors and nurses soon become familiar with the record and appreciate its value. Secretarial and clerical requirements are reduced to a minimum as transcription of medical data is eliminated, so greatly speeding up processing and feed back to the medical services. A few illustrations of trends in neonatal statistics and of computer linked maternal/neonatal data are presented.

Attitudes of healthcare professionals towards discussing lifestyle in routine clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the well-documented benefits of a healthy lifestyle for many patients, discussing lifestyle is currently not a structural part of routine clinical practice in hospital care. The aim of this study was to gain insight in the attitudes of healthcare professionals (HCPs) towards discussing lifestyle in their routine clinical practice, and explore differences between various types of HCPs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals (i.e. doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals (AHP)) from different departments (i.e. cardiology, gas

Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Care at Australian Emergency Departments: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) serve as crucial devices for essential care administration in emergency departments (ED). In Australia, to standardise clinical practice, the national PIVC Clinical Care Standard was introduced in 2021, however adherence to the Standard has not been adequately explored. Therefore, this study aims to investigate ED clinicians' adherence to the Standard via prospective audit. METHOD: This cross-sectional observational study of PIVCs was conducted in three Australian EDs between 2022 and 2023. Data were collected in alignment with the quality

Clinician satisfaction with hospital at home: A multilevel framework.

BACKGROUND: Hospital at Home (HaH) programs provide acute inpatient-level care, can expand the capacity of traditional hospitals, and help address ongoing inpatient bed capacity issues while maintaining quality of care. While prior studies have explored patient satisfaction with HaH, scholars highlight a need for research into clinician satisfaction with HaH. PURPOSE: This study identifies factors that influence clinician satisfaction with the HaH model and suggests an approach for effective program design and implementation. APPROACH: This study takes a qualitative approach, examining the p

Gap Analysis Investigating Healthcare Professionals' Skills and Knowledge for Pain Management in Haemophilia-A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: People with haemophilia continue to experience pain impacting activities of daily living despite the advances in haemostatic treatments. Although guidelines exist, pain management in the clinical setting remains inadequate. It is unclear why this gap in practice persists. This study aimed to explore the practice and experience of pain management by haemophilia healthcare professionals (HCPs) to better understand perceived competency and barriers/facilitators to appropriate care. METHODS: European HCPs working ≥ 3 years in haemophilia care were invited to participate (haematologi

Which bath is better? Evaluating comfort and vital signs in pediatric intensive care unit: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Bathing cleanses the skin, and the wiping and scrubbing movements during bathing stimulate blood circulation and help oxygenate tissues. There are two types of baths commonly used in intensive care: the traditional bath is washing the child with running water in the bed, and the wiping bathis wiping the child with warm, damp cloths. We planned this study to determine the effect of traditional and wiping baths on vital parameters (pulse rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, body temperature, mean blood pressure) and comfort of children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Questionnaire survey of healthcare professionals on taxane-induced nail change in Japan.

PURPOSE: Taxanes are widely used chemotherapeutic agents that frequently cause nail changes and have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Despite the prevalence of taxane-induced nail toxicity, limited data are available regarding evidence-based management strategies for the prevention or treatment of taxane-induced nail changes. Therefore, we aimed to gain insights into the prevention, treatment, and evaluation of nail changes in patients with cancer in Japan by conducting a questionnaire survey of physicians, pharmacists, and nurses involved in oncology treatment. METHODS: The
