Trajectories of alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug use in a diverse sample of young men who have sex with men.

INTRODUCTION: Cross-sectional research has found that young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are more likely to engage in heavy drinking and to have higher rates of marijuana and other illicit drug use compared to their heterosexual peers, but considerably less is known about their patterns of substance use over time. METHODS: In this study, we combined two longitudinal samples of racially diverse YMSM (N=552) and modeled their substance use trajectories from late-adolescence to young adulthood, including their frequency of alcohol use, frequency of marijuana use, and poly-drug use, using pie

An examination of alcohol risk profiles and co-occurring mental health symptoms among OEF/OIF veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to the general population, veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF/OIF) are more likely to engage in hazardous alcohol use and meet criteria for mental health disorders including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder. Less is known how distinct profiles of alcohol use behavior relate to mental health symptoms. METHOD: The current study examined the extent that indicators of alcohol use (i.e., drinks per week, peak blood alcohol concentration, and alcohol-related problems) are categorized into different alcohol risk profiles utilizi

Sexual health in women reporting a history of child sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and sexual health outcomes in young adult women. Maladaptive coping strategies and optimism were investigated as possible mediators and moderators of this relationship. METHOD: Data regarding sexual abuse, coping, optimism and various sexual health outcomes were collected using self-report and computerized questionnaires with a sample of 889 young adult women from the province of Quebec aged 20-23 years old. RESULTS: A total of 31% of adult women reported a history of CSA. Women reporting a severe CSA were

[Sleep disturbances and nightmares as risk factors for suicidal behavior among men and women].

INTRODUCTION: Today, more and more international studies analyze the connection between sleep disturbances, including nightmares, and the risk of suicide. The majority of these studies focuses on patients with depression and PTSD; a few studies use community samples. The present paper is based on a community sample research; it examines gender differences in the relationship between nightmares and suicidal behavior (ideation and attempt) during the three years preceding the study. METHODS: The database was derived from the data of the national representative survey Hungaro study 2006, the obj

Strategy for the assessment of neurobehavioral consequences of environmental factors.

One of the critical issues confronting the evolving discipline of behavioral and neurological toxicology is the general lack of test validation in animal models. This paper seeks to provide a strategy aimed at resolving this important problem. It is proposed that test validation be accomplished by evaluating known neurotoxins in a battery of tests chosen to assess in animal models a wide range of effects on the basis of reported human toxicosis symptomatology. We propose to measure ongoing home cage motor activity, food consumption, water consumption, clay consumption (and the diurnal cycling

Association between youth constipation, emotional/behavioral symptoms, and family quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Functional constipation is common in youth and negatively impacts quality of life. It is also linked to increased behavioral and emotional symptoms. While the impact of mental health problems on individual and family well-being is known, the combined association of youth behavioral/emotional symptoms and constipation severity on family quality of life remains unclear. This study examined the relationship between these factors and constipation-related family quality of life. METHODS: Participants were 231 children and adolescents (ages 2-18 years; M = 7.62, SD = 3.41; 50.6% female;

Biotin Mitigates Alcohol Withdrawal-Induced Anxiety and Depression by Regulating Serotonin Metabolism, BDNF, Inflammation, and Oxidative Stress in Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorders, particularly alcohol use disorders, represent a significant public health problem, with adolescents particularly vulnerable to their adverse effects. This study examined the possible anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of biotin, a crucial vitamin for brain function, in attenuating the behavioral and neurobiological changes associated with alcohol withdrawal in adolescent rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to a 20% ethanol solution for 21 days, followed by a 21-day drug-free period to assess long-term behavioral an

Behavioral disorders in dementia with Lewy bodies: old and new knowledge.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), the second most common primary degenerative neurocognitive disorder after Alzheimer disease, is frequently preceded by REM sleep behavior disorders (RBD) and other behavioral symptoms, like anxiety, irritability, agitation or apathy, as well as visual hallucinations and delusions, most of which occurring in 40-60% of DLB patients. Other frequent behavioral symptoms like attention deficits contribute to cognitive impairment, while attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a risk factor for DLB. Behavioral problems in DLB are more frequent, more severe a

Dopamine receptor 1 on CaMKII-positive neurons within claustrum mediates adolescent cocaine exposure-induced anxiety-like behaviors and electro-acupuncture therapy.

Adolescent cocaine exposure (ACE) increases risk of developing psychiatric problems such as anxiety, which may drive relapse in later life, however, its underlying molecular mechanism remains poorly understood. Methods: ACE male mice model were established by exposing to cocaine during adolescent period. Elevated plus maze (EPM) were used to assess anxiety-like behaviors in mice. Within claustrum, local injection of SCH-23390, a specific antagonist for dopamine receptor 1 (D1R), or D1R knocking-down virus were used to regulate D1R function or expression on CaMKII-positive neurons (D1RCaMKII) i

Executive function deficits and social-behavioral abnormality in mice exposed to a low dose of dioxin in utero and via lactation.

An increasing prevalence of mental health problems has been partly ascribed to abnormal brain development that is induced upon exposure to environmental chemicals. However, it has been extremely difficult to detect and assess such causality particularly at low exposure levels. To address this question, we here investigated higher brain function in mice exposed to dioxin in utero and via lactation by using our recently developed automated behavioral flexibility test and immunohistochemistry of neuronal activation markers Arc, at the 14 brain areas. Pregnant C57BL/6 mice were given orally a low

Research Review: 'Ain't misbehavin': Towards a developmentally-specified nosology for preschool disruptive behavior.

There is increasing consensus that disruptive behavior disorders and syndromes (DBDs) are identifiable in preschool children. There is also concomitant recognition of the limitations of the current DBD nosology for distinguishing disruptive behavior symptoms from the normative misbehavior of early childhood. In particular, there appears to be substantial insensitivity to heterotypic manifestations of this developmental period and problems in identifying meaningful heterogeneity. As a result, the developmental basis for much of the current nosology may be called into question. To address these

Creating opportunities for parent empowerment: program effects on the mental health/coping outcomes of critically ill young children and their mothers.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing numbers of children in the United States (ie, approximately 200 children per 100,000 population) require intensive care annually, because of advances in pediatric therapeutic techniques and a changing spectrum of pediatric disease. These children are especially vulnerable to a multitude of short- and long-term negative emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes, including a higher risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a greater need for psychiatric treatment, compared with matched hospitalized children who do not require intensive care. In addition, the paren

Associations between the CADM2 gene, substance use, risky sexual behavior, and self-control: A phenome-wide association study.

Risky behaviors, such as substance use and unprotected sex, are associated with various physical and mental health problems. Recent genome-wide association studies indicated that variation in the cell adhesion molecule 2 (CADM2) gene plays a role in risky behaviors and self-control. In this phenome-wide scan for risky behavior, it was tested if underlying common vulnerability could be (partly) explained by pleiotropic effects of this gene and how large the effects were. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-level and gene-level association tests within four samples (25 and Up, Spit for Science,

Youth self-reported health and their experience of parental incarceration.

INTRODUCTION: Mass incarceration is becoming one of this country's most detrimental public health problems. Children are particularly affected by this phenomenon, as parental incarceration is associated with a host of adverse outcomes, including children's engagement in health-risk behaviors that may negatively influence their mental and physical health. This study compares physical health indicators of youth with currently and formerly incarcerated parents with youth with no history of parental incarceration. METHOD: Using cross-sectional data from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS), th

Influence of maternal feeding goals and practices on children's eating behaviors.

Parents are highly influential in shaping their children's dietary habits. This study examined whether negative feeding practices mediated the relationship between feeding goals (health and convenience) and children's eating behaviors. One hundred ninety-two mothers (mean age = 34.2; mean BMI = 27.0) of 7-11 year old children participated via Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Results showed that negative feeding practices fully mediated the relationship between convenience feeding goals and children's eating behaviors (goals to healthy/unhealthy eating behaviors: β = -0.08/.09, n.s.; goals to feeding

Behavioral risk assessment for infectious diseases (BRAID): Self-report instrument to assess injection and noninjection risk behaviors in substance users.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Hepatitis C are a significant problem among substance abusers. Current risk behavior measures [e.g., HIV Risk Taking Behaviour Scale (HRBS) and Risk Assessment Battery (RAB)] were developed for injection drug users and do not include newly identified risks or noninjection drug use behaviors. This study developed and provided initial, internal validation of the Behavioral Risk Assessment for Infectious Diseases (BRAID) to assess infectious disease risk behaviors among alcohol and other drug users. METHODS: A self-report m

Breaking Down the Coercive Cycle: How Parent and Child Risk Factors Influence Real-Time Variability in Parental Responses to Child Misbehavior.

OBJECTIVE: Parent-child coercive cycles have been associated with both rigidity and inconsistency in parenting behavior. To explain these mixed findings, we examined real-time variability in maternal responses to children's off-task behavior to determine whether this common trigger of the coercive cycle (responding to child misbehavior) is associated with rigidity or inconsistency in parenting. We also examined the effects of risk factors for coercion (maternal hostility, maternal depressive symptoms, child externalizing problems, and dyadic negativity) on patterns of parenting. DESIGN: Mothe
