Circadian-Psychosocial Profiling of Cancer Pain: A Mixed-Methods Study on Heterogeneous Subgroups and Personalized Analgesic Efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: To identify distinct cancer pain subgroups using integrated circadian, physiological and psychosocial data and assess subgroup-specific analgesic responses. METHODS: This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study included 191 adult inpatients with cancer pain from a tertiary care hospital. Quantitative measures included 24-h blood pressure, salivary melatonin, pain beliefs, coping styles, social support, and clinical variables. Mixed-type cluster analysis (K-prototypes) identified subgroups. Analgesic efficacy was evaluated using multiple linear regression, with changes in mean pa

Patient-Reported Outcomes after Surgery for Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy: Post hoc Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is the leading cause of surgical failure in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and is associated with poor visual prognosis. We aimed to report changes in VFQ-25 and SF-36 tests following surgery for PVR-RRD and identify clinical and demographic factors associated with recovery. METHODS: This is a post hoc analysis of a phase IIIb randomized, participant-masked clinical trial evaluating slow-release dexamethasone in PVR-RRD. Patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade. Vision-related QOL was asses

Feasibility of a live-stream dance class for people with chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Adapted dance is a promising intervention to improve physical and psychosocial well-being post-stroke. At-home participation with a live-streamed dance program could address barriers to in-person attendance (e.g., limited community ambulation, and transportation). However, psychosocial benefits may be diminished because of reduced social interactions. The primary study objective was to assess the feasibility and safety of a live-streamed dance program for chronic stroke. Secondary objectives were to characterize participants who chose live-stream vs in-person options and quantify p

Family History of Chronic Pain: What Impact Does It Have on Current Clinical Status? Results From an Italian Study.

BACKGROUND: Although a key factor in understanding intergenerational transmission, family history of chronic pain deserves greater attention, particularly about its role as a potential mediating factor on current psychophysical status, together with other underestimated parameters (e.g., psychiatric comorbidity). The aims of this cross-sectional study were to explore the role of family history of chronic pain in the severity of current clinical status and to examine its association with current psychiatric comorbidity in a sample of adults with chronic pain during their first consultation at a

Prevalence of sexual dysfunction and the associated factors among postpartum women who visit Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia in 2024: a facility-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction is a common yet often neglected issue affecting the quality of life of postpartum women. It encompasses problems with desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain. The postpartum period is the transition from pregnancy and childbirth back to a non-pregnant physiological state and this change may affect a woman's sexual health. So, the aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and associated factors among postpartum women in Debre Tabor Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. METHOD: An institution-based cross-sectional study

The psychosocial health, experiences and needs of older adults and care partners during the first surge of the COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Minimal research has leveraged qualitative data methods to gain a better understanding of the experiences and needs of older adults (OAs) and care partners of OAs with and without Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (AD/ADRD) during the first surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we: 1) quantitatively evaluated the psychosocial health of community-dwelling OAs; 2) quantitatively evaluated the perceived stress of care partners for OAs; 3) qualitatively characterized the experiences and needs of community-dwelling OAs and their care partners; and 4) explored di

Are Morphometric and Biomechanical Characteristics of Lumbar Multifidus Related to Pain Intensity or Disability in People With Chronic Low Back Pain After Considering Psychological Factors or Insomnia?

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar multifidus muscle (LMM) dysfunction is thought to be related to pain and/or disability in people with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Although psychosocial factors play a major role in pain/disability, they are seldom considered as confounders in analyzing the association between LMM and CLBP. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine: (1) differences in psychological factors, insomnia, and LMM characteristics between people with and without CLBP; (2) associations between psychological factors, insomnia, or LMM characteristics and low back pain (LBP) intensity or LBP-relate

Menopausal symptoms in relationship to breast cancer-specific quality of life after adjuvant cytotoxic treatment in young breast cancer survivors.

INTRODUCTIONS: For young premenopausal breast cancer patients, adjuvant chemotherapy may cause menstrual disruptions and premature menopause, which may in turn impair their quality of life (QoL). In this study among young breast cancer survivors who have undergone adjuvant chemotherapy, the objectives were to assess post-treatment menopausal symptoms and their associated factors, and to correlate these symptoms with breast cancer-specific QoL. METHODS: The study population included premenopausal young Chinese women with early-stage breast cancer who had undergone adjuvant chemotherapy between

Nursing Theory, Terminology, and Big Data: Data-Driven Discovery of Novel Patterns in Archival Randomized Clinical Trial Data.

BACKGROUND: The growth and diversification of nursing theory, nursing terminology, and nursing data enable a convergence of theory- and data-driven discovery in the era of big data research. Existing datasets can be viewed through theoretical and terminology perspectives using visualization techniques in order to reveal new patterns and generate hypotheses. The Omaha System is a standardized terminology and metamodel that makes explicit the theoretical perspective of the nursing discipline and enables terminology-theory testing research. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to illustrate t

Can patient-reported profiles avoid unnecessary referral to a spine surgeon? An observational study to further develop the Nijmegen Decision Tool for Chronic Low Back Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is a heterogeneous condition with lack of diagnostic clarity. Therapeutic interventions show small effects. To improve outcomes by targeting interventions it is recommended to develop a triage system to surgical and non-surgical treatments based on treatment outcomes. The objective of the current study was to develop and internally validate prognostic models based on pre-treatment patient-reported profiles that identify patients who either respond or do not respond to two frequently performed treatments (lumbar spine surgery and multidisciplinary pain

Treatment of Apathy in Huntington's Disease and Other Movement Disorders.

Apathy is one of the most prevalent neurobehavioral symptoms in Huntington's disease (HD), occurring in approximately 70% of the symptomatic HD population. Apathy scores in patients with HD are highly correlated with duration of illness, suggesting that apathy is an inevitable consequence of advanced disease. Although less distressing than symptoms like depression and less disruptive than irritability or aggression, apathy has a considerable adverse impact on those affected with HD because it leads to a decrease of the goal-directed behaviors that contribute much to the day-to-day quality of l

Long-term outcomes of 217 botulism cases in the Republic of Georgia.

BACKGROUND: The acute paralytic syndrome of botulism has been well-described; however, little is known about its long-term consequences. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in the Republic of Georgia to evaluate the health of patients > or =6 months after they had experienced an episode of botulism. Case patients were selected on the basis of who had had a clinical diagnosis of foodborne botulism reported to the national surveillance system from 1998 through 2003. Three control subjects were randomly selected from each patient's community. RESULTS: We located 217 patients who had had

From self-construal to trait- and state-fear of missing out: the roles of need to belong and active social media use.

INTRODUCTION: Fear of missing out (FoMO) has become a common psychological experience in the context of widespread social media use. Building on the trait-state FoMO framework, the present study examined how interdependent self-construal is associated with trait- and state-FoMO through need to belong, and whether active social media use moderates these associations. METHODS: The hypotheses were tested among Chinese college students using a questionnaire survey in Study 1 and a scenario-based experimental design in Study 2. RESULTS: The results showed that interdependent self-construal was no

Children's Everyday Actions After Disaster: Cultural Meaning, Developmental Timing, and Moral Agency in Post-disaster Japan.

Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, children in affected regions exhibited everyday behaviors that challenge conventional psychological interpretations. Drawing on ethnographic field observations conducted in schools, shelters, and temporary housing in Miyagi Prefecture between March 2011 and March 2012, with follow-up observations from 2012 to 2013, this study examines five vignettes of children's post-disaster behaviors: hiding shoes, experiencing perceived scarcity related to school lunches, impulsive spending, giving away sweets and supplies, and engaging in silent play in comm

The Perceived Value of Risk Reduction Programs in High-Risk Areas in Malaysia.

This paper aims to evaluate the perceived value of the drug prevention activities in Malaysia's high-risk areas. The drug prevention activities involved are counseling, outreach, workshop, and program. A quantitative method is employed in this study to investigate the participants' perception on the programs. A cross-sectional survey of 332 participants across seven selected high-risk regions in Peninsular Malaysia were selected for their proximity to international borders and high drug-related crime statistics. The results revealed compelling insights, showing that emotional and social values

Telomere biology disorders as an example of rare disease advocacy.

Patient advocacy has emerged as a transformative force within the rare disease landscape. Few rare diseases illustrate this dynamic as clearly as telomere biology disorders (TBDs). Once regarded primarily as rare pediatric bone marrow failure syndromes, TBDs are now understood as multisystem, lifelong conditions affecting individuals across the age spectrum. In this review, we examine TBDs as a case study in rare disease advocacy, highlighting how advocacy has functioned not only as a support mechanism but as an organizing architecture underpinning progress across diagnosis, management, resear

Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Management of Pregnancy-Related Chronic Back Pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pregnancy-related back pain, defined as musculoskeletal pain arising during pregnancy and primarily attributable to gestational adaptations, is highly prevalent and often perceived as an inevitable, self-limited condition. However, a substantial proportion of individuals develop symptoms that persist beyond 3 months postpartum (herein referred to as pregnancy-related chronic back pain) with significant consequences for physical function, mental health, and quality of life. This narrative review summarizes current evidence regarding the epidemiology, mechanisms, risk factors,

Fibromyalgia in men: beyond invisibility-a biopsychosocial and clinical perspective in rheumatology.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome traditionally perceived as a predominantly female condition, although growing evidence suggests that this view may partly reflect diagnostic and sociocultural biases rather than true epidemiological differences. This perspective critically examines fibromyalgia in men as an underrecognized and understudied clinical entity. The authors propose an integrative conceptual framework in which the invisibility of men with fibromyalgia emerges from the interaction between sociocultural barriers to healthcare-seeking, clinician-related diagnostic bias, and hetero
