Basal cell carcinoma of the axilla: review of the world literature.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the axilla is rare; indeed, 70 axillary BCCs have been described in 69 patients. Using the PubMed database, an extensive literature search was performed on BCC, axilla, and axillary. Relevant papers were reviewed and the characteristics of individuals with BCC of the axilla were summarized. The calculated prevalence of axillary BCC was 0.17%. They occurred predominantly in Caucasians. The majority of patients had no obvious BCC-associated risk factors. They were observed 1.2 times more often in men than in women and twice as often in the right axilla than the left

Reviewing efficacy of alternative water treatment techniques.

This section is designed to provide a brief summary of some of the findings. A good deal of work has been conducted by Mr N. L. Pavey and the team at BSRIA, Bracknell. The BSRIA publications are an excellent source of further information. Ultraviolet radiation: UV radiation of wavelength 254 nm destroys bacteria by a mechanism of damaging nucleic acids by producing thymine dimers which disrupt DNA replication [Gavdy and Gavdy, 1980]. L. pneumophila has been reported as sensitive to UV dosages of 2,500-7,000 uW.s/cm2 [Antopol & Ellner, 1979; Knudson, 1985]. Antopol and Ellner [1979] examined th

Disruption of p53 function in immortalized human cells does not affect survival or apoptosis after taxol or vincristine treatment.

In the present study, we report our findings on the impact of p53 disruption on the sensitivity of human cell lines to the antimitotic agents Taxol and vincristine. Comparisons of cell survival and apoptosis were made with y-irradiation and, in some cases, several other DNA-damaging chemotherapeutic agents. Studies in eight Burkitt's lymphoma and lymphoblastoid cell lines (four wild-type p53 and four mutant p53 cell lines) revealed that the DNA-damaging agents assayed tended to exhibit less growth inhibition in the mutant p53 cell lines compared to the wild-type p53 cell lines. In contrast, no

Gene mutation screening using single-molecule force spectroscopy: a novel way of PCR-independent genetic testing.

Detection of systemic pathologies during their subclinical phases remains a global challenge, as current diagnostics often fail to correctly identify diseases in asymptomatic individuals. While conventional radiological imaging and histopathological tissue biopsies are considered clinical benchmarks, they are frequently hindered by ionizing radiation risks, invasiveness, and the inability to account for intratumoral heterogeneity. Consequently, the diagnostic landscape is shifting toward liquid biopsy, with salivary diagnostics emerging as a promising, non-invasive alternative that facilitates

Complete Radiotherapy Response of Chemoresistant Para-Aortic Lymph Node Metastases in an Endometrial Cancer Patient Meeting the Amsterdam II Criteria for Lynch Syndrome.

Patients with Lynch syndrome often have a strong family history of colorectal and endometrial cancers and exhibit mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency, which may be associated with chemoresistance. Radiotherapy can enhance tumor-specific immune responses and may be effective in such patients. A 49-year-old perimenopausal woman with a family history of colon cancer in three relatives was diagnosed with endometrial carcinoma with para-aortic lymph node metastases. She underwent surgical staging, including pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy. Pathological examination revealed a mixed endometrioid

Can a cephalogram be used to estimate palatal suture maturity to inform expander selection.

INTRODUCTION: The maturity of the mid-palatal suture (MPS) could largely determine the necessity of more invasive interventions for correcting transverse maxillary deficiency. CBCT, the most commonly used method for assessing MPS maturity, is not routinely available and exposes patients to higher levels of ionizing radiation than a cephalogram. Given the substantial number of morphological features contained in a cephalogram, this study aimed to estimate CBCT-defined MPS maturity using an entire cephalogram alone via deep learning (DL) algorithms. METHODS: A total of 543 paired CBCT and cepha

A rare ATM variant in a Colombian family with chorea-ataxia syndrome: implications for an early diagnosis.

Ataxia-telangiectasia (ATX-ATM) is a rare multisystem disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene. The classic phenotype is characterized by childhood-onset progressive cerebellar ataxia and movement disorders, accompanied by telangiectasias, primary immunodeficiency, chronic pulmonary disease, endocrine abnormalities, and increased sensitivity to ionizing radiation, as well as a markedly elevated risk of malignancy. In contrast, variant ATX-ATM is associated with a milder and more heterogeneous phenotype, in which cerebellar ataxia may be absent, whi

Breast Cancer Screening in Pregnant and Lactating Patients: A Practical Approach.

Screening and diagnostic evaluation for breast cancer is increasingly common during pregnancy and lactation due to delayed childbearing and identification of elevated hereditary and familial risk during reproductive years, with patients often undergoing risk assessment beginning at 25 years of age. Although mammography is safe for pregnant and lactating patients, its sensitivity may be reduced because hormonal changes increase parenchymal density and can obscure malignant lesions. US is widely used because it does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation and serves as the primary modality fo

The Potential for Enhanced Ovarian Cancer Diagnostics Through Optimized Derivative Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

IntroductionOvarian cancer is a major global concern. Due to late detection, it is one of the few malignancies for which the five-year survival rate continues to be low without appreciable improvement in recent decades. Screening methods are needed that non-invasively, without ionizing radiation, detect early-stage ovarian cancer with clear distinction from benign lesions. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) could be a key contributor to early ovarian cancer detection, insofar as data analysis and interpretation after appropriate signal processing are implemented.MethodsThe derivative non-pa

CT-Less Whole-Body Bone Segmentation of PET Images Using a Multimodal Deep Learning Network.

In bone cancer imaging, positron emission tomography (PET) is ideal for the diagnosis and staging of bone cancers due to its high sensitivity to malignant tumors. The diagnosis of bone cancer requires tumor analysis and localization, where accurate and automated wholebody bone segmentation (WBBS) is often needed. Current WBBS for PET imaging is based on paired Computed Tomography (CT) images. However, mismatches between CT and PET images often occur due to patient motion, which leads to erroneous bone segmentation and thus, to inaccurate tumor analysis. Furthermore, there are some instances wh

Monte Carlo evaluation of occupational exposures in equine radiology procedures.

Portable X-ray equipments are commonly used in diagnostic radiology of equine patients. Despite its benefits, the exposure to ionizing radiation can pose a health risk to workers as physical restraint of patients is typically required. In this context, the aim of this study was to apply Monte Carlo simulation to investigate occupational exposure in the diagnosis of horses. The simulations were carried out by the Monte Carlo N-Particle 6.2 (MCNP6.2) code. The workers were represented by a FASH3 (female) and MASH3 (male) virtual anthropomorphic phantoms. To simulate the horse, a realistic virtua

Impact of Super-Resolution Deep Learning Reconstruction on Low-Dose CT in Patients with Central Venous Catheter or Central Venous Port.

CT imaging is useful for evaluating complications related to central venous catheter insertion; however, it involves exposure to ionizing radiation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of super-resolution deep learning reconstruction (SR-DLR) on the quality of low-dose CT imaging compared to hybrid iterative reconstruction (HIR) in patients with central venous catheter or central venous port. In this retrospective study, chest CT images were reconstructed using SR-DLR and HIR from source data acquired with a three-dimensional landmark scan during scout imaging. DHX9 phosphorylation at S321 by ATM regulates DHX9 retention at DNA double-strand break sites and interaction with BRCA1.

To preserve genome stability, the repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) that can be caused by exposure to ionizing radiation and certain anticancer drugs is of paramount importance. Recently, it became evident that various DNA-RNA helicases play a pivotal role in homologous recombination (HR) repair and non-homologous end joining, which are the two principal DSB repair machineries in mammalian cells. In a previous study, we reported that DHX9, which belongs to the DExH-box helicase family, is involved in HR repair. However, the regulatory mechanisms governing the function of DHX9 remains e

Diagnostic accuracy of serum and urinary biomarkers for renal scarring in children with vesicoureteral reflux: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Renal scarring (RS) is a significant long-term complication of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), traditionally diagnosed by dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy-a costly imaging modality involving ionizing radiation. Non-invasive serum and urinary biomarkers have been proposed as alternative diagnostic tools. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of these biomarkers for detecting RS in children with VUR. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest through Jul
