Ectopic bone formation, or para osteo arthropathy (POA), is commonly seen in humans following lesions to the central nervous system. The condition also occurs after severe trauma, burns, or tetanus, and, rarely, after poliomyelitis or cauda equina lesions. Healing of extraction wounds in rats following cephalic irradiation was studied by histologic, radiographic, and histometric methods 14 days after tooth extraction. Irradiation was given at 0, 3, and 7 days after surgery in doses of either 15, 20, or 30 Gy. No significant differences were seen with the different doses given seven days post-extraction. However, socket healing was delayed when irradiation was given immediately and three days after extraction. On the basis of these observations, it is recommended that radiation not begin until at least one week after the extraction of teeth.

Rats with endogenous hyperprolactinaemia, as induced by pituitary homografts under the kidney capsule, displayed increased grooming behavior as compared to that of sham-operated animals. Twelve days after surgery, intracerebroventricular injection of anti-prolactin serum (dilution 1:100, 1 microliter) suppressed the excessive grooming of homografted rats. These observations suggest that prolactin from a peripheral source may reach the central nervous system to affect brain mechanisms involved in grooming behavior.

Age-related hair cell loss has been studied in squirrel monkeys using surface preparation of the organ of Corti. Increasing hair cell loss starting at the apex is seen as a function of age. This finding is discussed in the light of our studies in guinea pigs, chinchillas, and rabbits. Reviewed with other human and experimental data, it would appear that many species of animals have age-related histological damage similar to that seen in the human organ of Corti.
