Pathogenesis of transient high myopia after blunt eye trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pathogenesis of transient high myopia after blunt eye trauma. DESIGN: Two observational case reports and literature review. METHODS: Refraction was measured in two patients with an autorefractometer in the acute and convalescent stages after a blunt eye injury. The anterior chamber angle, the ciliary body, and the choroid were examined by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in the acute and convalescent stages. In one patient, the anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and axial length were measured by A-scan ultrasonography in the acute and convalescent stages. MAIN

An informal satisfaction survey of 200 patients after laser in situ keratomileusis.

PURPOSE: Patient satisfaction following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is commonly reported as high. This paper reviews the outcome of LASIK both in terms of visual results and satisfaction. METHODS: Two-hundred patients were surveyed telephonically to establish their degree of satisfaction with LASIK and to enquire about postoperative use of glasses, and symptoms of light sensitivity and of night vision problems. Patient anonymity was assured. RESULTS: The majority of patients (95%) never wore distance glasses after LASIK. Reading glasses were used by 49 (24.5%), related to age and pr

[Impact of pterygium size on corneal topography and visual acuity - a prospective clinical cross-sectional study].

PURPOSE: Pterygia may cause topographic changes featuring increase of astigmatism. The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of the head-limbus-distance (=height) and limbal base length of the pterygium on the anterior corneal curvature and visual acuity before excision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 52 eyes (19 female, 33 male) with a mean age of 53 +/- 14 years the pterygium size (height, base length, area) was quantified using projected preoperative clinical slides and was correlated with visual acuity, refractive, keratometric, topographic astigmatism and Surface Regularity Index (S

Corneal first surface optical aberrations and visual performance.

PURPOSE: Wavefront analysis has demonstrated that refractive surgery-induced corneal first surface aberrations are large, are dominated by symmetric aberrations (spherical-like aberrations), and are correlated to measures of visual performance. It is not clear whether the correlation between corneal first surface aberrations and visual performance can be generalized to other corneal conditions where large asymmetric aberrations (coma-like aberrations) may dominate the aberration structure. The purpose of the research reported here was to determine the general utility of corneal first surface w

Rigid gas permeable contact lens changes in the aphakic infant.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe and evaluate the frequent parameter changes required in aphakic infants fit with rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. METHODS: Twenty-five eyes from 18 patients with congenital cataracts were fit postoperatively with RGP lenses and followed for an average of 19 months. The original lens specifications were determined by keratometer readings, corneal diameter, and axial length or retinoscopy obtained under sedation just prior to or after cataract extraction surgery. The frequency of changes in contact lens power, base curve, and diameter

[Live epikeratophakia and deep lamellar keratoplasty for I-III stage-specific surgical treatment of keratoconus].

BACKGROUND: Perforating keratoplasty (PKP) for the treatment of keratoconus is a temporary procedure that sacrifices the healthy recipient endothelium. As an alternative to PKP we perform live-epikeratophakia (L-EPI) in keratoconus I-II and deep lamellar keratoplasty (DLKP) in keratoconus II-III. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 20 patients with keratoconus were operated on either with L-EPI for keratoconus I-II (n = 10) or DLKP for keratoconus II-III (n = 10) respectively. In all cases, corneal tissue eligible for corneal transplantation was used. L-EPI: The corneal lenticule was prepared by means of t

Myopia of prematurity, clinical patterns. A follow-up of Danish children now aged 3-9 years.

A discussion of myopia of prematurity is based on 16 low-birth weight children now aged 3-9 years. During their first months after delivery, retinopathy of prematurity had been observed in all but one subjects-here possibly missed due to incomplete control. Two subjects had cryotherapy. Two eyes out of 32 got blind; another 4 eyes became weak-sighted. The primary aim of the longitudinal study was to describe the variation in-and the course of-refraction, as apparent from serial examinations, the natural history so to say, to add new facets to our concept of myopia of prematurity and possibly t

Controlled study of ocular morbidity in school children born preterm.

Two hundred children who were of very low birth weight (VLBW) (1500 g or less) and 193 controls who were of normal birth weight (NBW) were examined at approximately 9 years of age. Binocular visual acuity of 6/6 or better was noted in 178 (89.5%) VLBW children and 189 (97.9%) NBW children. Visual morbidity was significantly higher among VLBW children. Strabismus was present in 38 (19%), cicatricial retinopathy of prematurity in 13 (6.5%), and optic atrophy in six (3%) children in this group. Children who were VLBW were also more myopic than the NBW controls. Optic atrophy was frequently associ

Relations between visual acuity, refraction and the pattern reversal visual-evoked cortical potential in aphakia.

The investigations included 20 aphakic patients. Relations were established between visual acuity, refraction and the pattern reversal visual-evoked cortical potentials (PRVECP). Close correlations were found between the three values. The optimum correction for obtaining best visual acuity, the skiascopic value, and the correction value for obtaining the largest PRVECP amplitude at minimum peak time differ by an average of 0.5 dptr.
