BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute effects of nicotine on macular microvasculature by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Non-smokers who were administered 4 mg nicotine gum (study group) or placebo gum (control group) were enrolled, 18 individuals in each group. All participants underwent OCTA at baseline and 1 hour after gum chewing. Macular flow area, macular vessel density, foveal avascular zone area, central foveal thickness, and subfoveal choroidal thickness were analyzed.

This study evaluated age-related changes in the superficial and deep retinal capillary plexus (SCP and DCP, respectively) and in the foveal avascular zone (FAZ). SCP and DCP perfusion density (PD) were measured in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) macular scans of 145 eyes of 145 healthy Japanese subjects, and findings were compared with SCP FAZ and clinical data. In 35 children with Schönlein-Henoch Syndrome (SHS) serum IgG, IgM, and IgA concentrations were increased in 15%, 21%, and 44% of cases, respectively. Pulsatile three-dimensional retinal arteriolar tortuosity has been previously reported in about 50% of patients with coarctation of the aorta. In a contemporary series of 20 patients with coarctation of the aorta, none exhibited this characteristic retinal vascular abnormality. Our findings suggest that the retinal vascular abnormalities in patients with coarctation of the aorta represent secondary hemodynamic changes. The prevalence of these abnormalities may be decreasing because of earlier surgical repair of coarctation.

This clinicopathological report describes an unusual combination of axial corneal malformation and angiodysgenesis in the uvea, retina and optic nerve in three eyes. A young woman presented with a 4-month history of retinal and vertebrobasilar ischemia. Angiography demonstrated narrowing of major branches of the aortic arch. Intractable, severe retroorbital pain of the right eye developed after a middle cerebral artery stroke.
