Biomechanical forces, including vascular shear stress, cyclic stretching, and extracellular matrix stiffness, which influence mechanosensitive channels in the plasma membrane, determine cell function in atherosclerosis. Being highly associated with the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, endocytosis is the key point in molecule and macromolecule trafficking, which plays an important role in lipid transportation. The process of endocytosis relies on the mobility and tension of the plasma membrane, which is sensitive to biomechanical forces. Several studies have advanced the signal transductio

The BRCA1 gene is located on the human chromosome 17q21.31 and plays important role in biological processes. The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARS) are a family of heterogenous enzymes responsible protein synthesis and whose secondary functions include a role in autoimmune myositis. Our findings reveal that the compositional constraint and the preference of more A/T -ending codons determine the codon usage patterns in BRCA1 gene while more G/C-ending codons influence the codon usage pattern of AARS gene among mammals. The codon usage bias in BRCA1 and AARS genes is low. The codon CGC encoding a

Neutrophils play significant roles in immune homeostasis and as neutralizers of microbial infections. Recent evidence further suggests heterogeneity of neutrophil developmental and activation states that exert specialized effector functions during inflammatory disease conditions. Neutrophils can play multiple roles during viral infections, secreting inflammatory mediators and cytokines that contribute significantly to host defense and pathogenicity. However, their roles in viral immunity are not well understood. In this review, we present an overview of neutrophil heterogeneity and its impact

Pediatric radiologists play a key role in the detection of child abuse through the identification of characteristic injury patterns. Emergency radiologists have the potential to play an equally important role in the detection of elder physical abuse; however, they currently play little to no part in this effort. We examine the reasons behind this limited role, and potential strategies to expand it, by interviewing attending faculty from Emergency Radiology, Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Radiology, and Pediatrics. Our interviews revealed that radiologists' contribution to elder abus

In mammals, macrophages are known to play a major role in tissue regeneration. They contribute to inflammation, histolysis, re-epithelialization, revascularization and cell proliferation. Macrophages have been shown to be essential for regeneration in salamanders and fish, but their role has not been elucidated in mammalian epimorphic regeneration. Here, using the regenerating mouse digit tip as a mammalian model, we demonstrate that macrophages are essential for the regeneration process. Using cell-depletion strategies, we show that regeneration is completely inhibited; bone histolysis does n

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved cellular programme for the turnover of organelles, proteins, and other macromolecules, involving the lysosomal degradation pathway. Emerging evidence suggests that autophagy can play a central role in human metabolism as well as impact diverse cellular processes including organelle homeostasis, cell death and proliferation, lipid and glycogen metabolism, and the regulation of inflammation and immune responses. The purpose of this review is to examine recent evidence for the role of autophagy in cellular metabolism, and its relevance t

The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-18 was originally discovered as an interferon-γ-inducing factor in 1995. IL-18 is known to play an important role in Th1/Tc1 polarization and promoting the production of Th2 cytokines (e.g., IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, and IL-13) by T cells, NK cells, basophils, and mast cells. IL-18 can act as a cofactor for Th2 cell development and IgE production, and also plays an important role in the differentiation of Th17 cells. IL-18 is a key player in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, adult-onset Still's disea

Chemokine receptors are G-protein-coupled, seven-transmembrane-spanning surface receptors that play key roles in cell trafficking, cell motility, and survival. These receptors are activated by small molecular weight chemotactic cytokines called chemokines. Chemokine receptors and their corresponding chemokine ligands play roles in the migration and localization of normal T cells (and other cells) during physiological responses in inflamed or infected skin. In psoriasis, the chemokine receptor CCR6 is expressed on the Th17 cells and γδ T cells, which produce a variety of cytokines (IL17 and IL2

Annexin (Anx) A3 increases and plays important roles in the signalling cascade in hepatocyte growth in cultured hepatocytes. However, no information is available on its expression and role in rat liver regeneration. In the present study, AnxA3 expression was investigated to determine whether it also plays a role in the signalling cascade in rat liver regeneration. AnxA3 protein and mRNA level both increase in liver after administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) or 70% partial hepatectomy. AnxA3 protein level increases in isolated parenchymal hepatocytes, but not in non-parenchymal liver c

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) now plays an important role in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, tremor, and dystonia. DBS may also have a role in the treatment of other disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette's syndrome, and depression. The neuropsychologist plays a crucial role in patient selection, follow-up, and management of intra-operative and post-operative effects (Pillon, 2002; Saint-Cyr & Trepanier, 2000). There is now emerging evidence that DBS can induce mood, cognitive, and behavioral changes. These changes can have dramatic effects on patient outcome. There hav

Superantigens are a group of bacterial and viral proteins that are characterized by their capacity to stimulate a large number of T cells. They bind directly to the major histocompatibility complex class II molecule on the antigen-presenting cell and cross-link the antigen-presenting cell with T cells expressing certain T-cell receptors, leading to polyclonal T-cell activation. They have been shown to play a role in toxic shock syndrome and mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome and are postulated to play a role in other systemic diseases. Because inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatiti

Three different phases can be distinguished in rats' sexual cycle, the introductory (precopulatory), the copulatory and the executive (ejaculatory) phases. In this review, a new analysis of existing pharmacological data is made, both in male and female rats, in which the different aspects of sexual behavior are taken into account. An effort is made to distinguish pharmacological effects on sexual behavior from a possible physiological role of noradrenaline. In addition, new data on the role of α2-adrenoceptors on female sexual behavior is presented. The new analysis suggests that noradrenaline

Chronic allergic eye disease encompasses several disorders, but it is vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) that have sight-threatening sequelae. T cells, eosinophils, and mast cells are all found in the conjunctiva, and are thought to play a role in disease pathogenesis. Recently, the conjunctival epithelium has also been considered to play a key role. New and effective therapeutic strategies for the future for these patients depend on achieving a greater understanding of the roles and interactions of the cell populations in these sight-threatening disorders.

Research suggests that the tongue plays an important role in the production of oral malodor. To investigate the role of tongue surface characteristics and oral bacteria in halitosis development, the authors tested associations between odor measurements, volatile sulfur compound levels, periodontal parameters, tongue surface characteristics, presence of trypsinlike activity of organisms on the tongue and teeth and bacteriological parameters in 16 participants with complaints of oral malodor. The data indicate that the proteolytic, anaerobic flora residing on the tongue plays an essential role i

The pineal gland plays an important role in the production of melatonin and in the synchronization of the reproduction process in seasonal breeding animals. Changes in the duration of day length are the most important stimulatory factors. In humans the pineal gland may not only have a physiological role in the seasonality of maturation, but also concerning the simultaneously observable changes of serum hormone and serum melatonin levels as well as in regard of changes in hair colour in prepuberal children. Therefore the pineal gland seems to play an important physiological role in the timing o

Anorexia nervosa (AN), an eating disorder, is characterized by extreme weight loss and fear of weight gain. Psychosocial factors are thought to play important roles in the development and progression of AN; however, biological factors also presumably contribute to eating disorders. Recent evidence has shown that the gut microbiota plays an important role in pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders including AN. In this article, we describe the possible role of the gut microbiota in the development and persistence of AN, based on the latest research works, including those of our group.

Normal oxygen level is critical for niches that together with other components of the niche play vital role in regulating stem or tumor cells behavior. Hypoxia plays an important role in normal development and disease progression, including the growth of solid tumors. The hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) are the key mediators of the cellular response to hypoxia. In this review, we focused on the role of HIFs on bone tumor formation. Further, we also emphasized how hypoxia, stem cells, and its niches regulate the bone tumorigenesis.

Milky spots are very small omental organs, in contact with peritoneal membrane, devoid of capsule and consisting of macrophages, lymphocytes and a few plasma cells supported by blood and lymphatic vessels. The exact role of these particular organs is still not clear, but they are similar to lymphatic structures and it is clear that they play a role in peritoneal infection and abdominal tumors. Peritoneal dialysis seems to activate the milky spots changing their morphology. The authors try to formulate some hypotheses on the role played by these little omental organs during autologous mesotheli

Rodents play a role as reservoir hosts for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). We trapped 77 voles of the genus Microtus and tested their blood using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the presence of antibodies against TBEV. We detected TBEV antibodies in three adult individuals (4%). Voles might play a role in the circulation of TBEV.

Fibrinogen is a complex glycoprotein that is known to play a significant role in the process of thrombus formation and evolution, and has been linked to the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Given the importance of fibrinogen in these processes, it has been evaluated as a biomarker for atherosclerotic disease and as a marker during treatment for venous and arterial thrombosis. Here we describe the expansive role that fibrinogen plays in human physiology.
