Type I interferons for induction of remission in ulcerative colitis.

BACKGROUND: Interferons (IFNs) are cytokines which possess immunoregulatory properties and have been used to successfully treat a number of chronic inflammatory disorders. It has been postulated that Type I IFNs may be able to re-establish the Th1/Th2 balance in Th2 predominant diseases like ulcerative colitis. OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of type I IFN therapy for induction of remission in ulcerative colitis. SEARCH METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, the Cochrane IBD/FBD group specialised register, and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to August

Development and Evaluation of a Two-Stage Machine Learning Multivariable Model to Support Clinical Decision-Making in Thrombophilia Management.

Thrombophilia is a disease characterized by an increased risk of venous thromboembolism. Diagnosing and treating thrombophilic patients requires the nuanced interpretation of a great number of medical data. In this single-center, retrospective study, we evaluated the use of a two-stage machine learning (ML) model to predict the thrombophilia risk category and subsequent anticoagulation recommendation. The model was trained and tested using clinical and laboratory data obtained from 496 patients who underwent a complete thrombophilia work-up at the University Hospital Bonn between 2019 and 2024

Who participates in LDCT screening for the early detection of lung cancer after long-term occupational exposure to asbestos dust? Results of the analysis of administrative and medical routine data from the German Social Accident Insurance.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in Germany and is predominantly detected at an advanced stage. To ensure early detection, the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) offers lung cancer screening including a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for individuals with long-term occupational exposure to asbestos dust and a smoking history of at least 30 pack years. However, evidence remains scarce about what encourages this group of people to participate in LDCT screening after medical consultation. METHODS: A secondary data analysis using routinely collected medical and a…

Comparing machine learning models and traditional approaches for predicting obstructive coronary artery disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive coronary artery disease (oCAD) is a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and accurate prediction is essential for guiding clinical decision-making and secondary prevention. However, the potential of machine learning (ML) models for predicting oCAD remains insufficiently explored; therefore, this study aimed to compare the performance of ML methods with traditional approaches and evaluate differences among ML algorithm classes. METHODS: A systematic search of EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and PubMed was conducted from inception to F

Cancer detection in the European Randomised Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC).

OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive analysis regarding outcomes of repeated screening and detection of low-grade versus high-grade cancer from the European Randomised Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analysed men aged 55-69 years at random across the ERSPC trial centres except France. Men in the screening arm were classified as ever-attenders (who attended at least one screening cycle) or non-attenders (who did not attend a specific screening cycle). Cancer detection rates (CDRs) were calculated by age group and centre across three screening

Evidence of heterogeneity in the opioid withdrawal syndrome: Spontaneous and precipitated withdrawal.

AIMS: This study characterized the heterogeneity of opioid withdrawal by comparing naturally occurring withdrawal during opioid abstinence (spontaneous withdrawal) with abrupt, pharmacologically induced naloxone-precipitated withdrawal in adults with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted on de-identified data from 86 adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for moderate-to-severe OUD. Participants either presented in spontaneous withdrawal (n = 28) or underwent naloxone challenge to precipitate withdrawal (n = 58). Withdrawal symptoms were rated using the Wang procedure.

Why Do Male Users Engage with Connected Sex Toys? A Latent Class Analysis of Motivational Profiles.

Teledildonics are internet-connected sex toys enabling remote and interactive sexual experiences. Despite growing adoption, factors driving engagement with teledildonics remain underexplored. Clarifying how user motivations intersect to form distinct profiles is crucial for advancing theoretical models of sexual behavior and technology adoption. This study draws on a secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data from customers of one teledildonics company. Using latent class analysis, we identified motivational patterns among male users (N = 569) across five indicators (arousal enhancement

Targeting hyperarousal to improve sleep: A network intervention analysis of a digital intervention for insomnia.

OBJECTIVE: Digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is an effective and scalable treatment for chronic insomnia. However, treatment outcomes are typically evaluated using aggregated symptom scores, which obscure differential effects on individual symptoms and limit insights into underlying mechanisms. This study applied network intervention analysis (NIA) to investigate how somnovia, a self-guided digital CBT-I intervention, is associated with changes in individual symptoms of insomnia, depression, and anxiety over time. METHOD: This secondary analysis used data from a random

A prospective study of intravenous iron effectiveness on quality of life and functional outcomes in patients with cancer.

Cancer-related anemia (CRA) is a common complication during and after cancer treatment. It contributes to impaired functional capacity, reduced quality of life (QoL), and worse prognosis Iron deficiency (ID) is a frequent underlying cause; therefore, intravenous iron replacement may improve both hematologic and patient-centered outcomes. However, prospective data on QoL and functional status in CRA remain limited. We prospectively evaluated the effects of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on QoL and cardiorespiratory fitness in cancer patients with ID. A prospective observational study was conducted
