The combination of the acromion Open fracture to a section of the supraspinatus tendon is an exceptional situation. The author reports the case of a young patient with a wound of the posterolateral side of the right shoulder. Screwing was done for the fracture of the acromion after supraspinatus tendon suture with good clinical and radiological outcome after an appropriate rehabilitation.

Throwing is a complex motion that involves the entire body and often puts an inordinate amount of stress on the shoulder and the arm. Warm-up prepares the body for work and can enhance performance. Sling-based exercise (SE) has been theorized to activate muscles, particularly the stabilizers, in a manner beneficial for preactivity warm-up, yet this hypothesis has not been tested. Our purpose was to determine if a warm-up using SE would increase throwing velocity and accuracy compared to a traditional, thrower's 10 warm-up program. We present a series of distal clavicle fractures in which the coracoclavicular ligaments remain intact to the proximal segment, but the distal aspect of the clavicle is displaced superiorly. The fractures sustained in this series are not described in any of the multiple classification systems currently in use for clavicular fractures. We present a series of 2 active-duty patients who sustained nearly identical distal clavicle fractures during Army combatives training. A 23-year-old male was treated successfully with nonoperative therapy and returned to deployment within 2 months. A 23-year-old

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: In this study the arthroscopic reconstruction of a rupture of the subscapularis tendon is described and the results of the technique are evaluated, with the aim to show the advantages and effectiveness of this surgical procedure.
MATERIAL: Between 2006 and 2008, arthroscopic repair of the subscapularis tendon was carried out in 23 patients, 16 men and seven women, with an average age of 55 (range, 37-74) years. The dominant arm was treated more often (15x). All 23 patients treated by this diagnostic arthroscopic technique were included in the evaluation.

The traditional treatment of a first-time anterior shoulder dislocation of reduction and a period of immobilisation should be challenged. The purpose of this review is to assimilate and present the current literature on acute anterior shoulder instability. This involves consideration of the pathoanatomy, natural history and the more recent evaluation of treatment outcomes, which appropriately incorporate quality of life measures in addition to recurrences. There is ample evidence to consider primary stabilisation as an option for treatment in the high-risk group, less than 25 years of age.

The development and successful clinical application of suture anchors and tacks have revolutionized the surgeon's ability to secure soft tissues to bone via open or arthroscopic surgical techniques. When used carefully and with proper technique, these devices provide viable options for the repair and reconstruction of many intra-articular and extra-articular abnormalities in the shoulder, including rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, and biceps lesions that require labrum repair or biceps tendon tenodesis. Like many technologies, however, the successful application of these devices requi

The rotator cuff is the complex of four muscles that arise from the scapula; supscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor. The long head of the biceps tendon may be considered a functional part of the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is key structure of the shoulder which gives dynamic stability and movements. Rotator cuff tears my occur as consequence of impingement syndrome or degenerative changes. Most tears occur in the supraspinatus tendon. The patients are usually older than 40 years. On clinical examination there is weakness of abducation and external rotation of the arm. O

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2002eng
Surgical treatment of symptomatic pathology of the long head of the biceps tendon generally consists of either biceps tenotomy or tenodesis. Biceps tenodesis is generally recommended for younger patients and has been well described using open techniques. With advancements in arthroscopic ability and equipment, new arthroscopic techniques have recently been reported. These techniques can be especially useful when used in conjunction with other arthroscopic procedures such as distal clavicle resection, rotator cuff repair, and subacromial decompression. We present a modification of the technique

The course of spinal accessory nerve in the posterior triangle, the innervation of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles and the contributions from the cervical plexus were studied in 20 cadaveric dissections. The nerve was most vulnerable to iatrogenic injuries after leaving the sternocleidomastoid. Direct innervation of trapezius by cervical plexus branches was noted in five dissections, whereas connections between the cervical plexus and the spinal accessory nerve were observed in 19 dissections. These were usually under the sternocleidomastoid (proximal to the level of division of

Understanding the pathophysiology and treatment of rotator cuff disorders is the key to understanding all other aspects of shoulder rehabilitation. Impingement rehabilitation focuses on strengthening the humeral head depressors, while ignoring the deltoid and supraspinatus muscles. Later treatment includes specific retraining of scapular balancing muscles. The final phase of treatment includes strengthening the prime humeral movers in positions that avoid further stress to the injured rotator cuff tendons and, last of all, specifically strengthening the supraspinatus muscle.

The aim of the project was to compare three methods for measuring muscle strength in individuals with SCI: the manual muscle test (MMT), the hand-held myometry and the isokinetic dynamometry (Cybex). Thirty-eight (38) subjects, 31 men and seven women (age range = 14-63; lesion from C5 to L3) were included in this project. Muscle strength assessment of upper limbs was performed at admittance and discharge using MMT and myometry for the left and right side, and using Cybex dynamometer for the stronger side. The testing sessions were at least a day apart and performed by a single evaluator (train

Osteitis condensans of the clavicle is a rare condition characterized by pain in the shoulder and often limitation of motion of the shoulder. The medical history and results of the physical examination, laboratory data, and radiographic studies (including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging), often establish the diagnosis. Patients who have slight or no pain usually require no treatment. Varying results have been reported for many different methods of treatment, including surgical excision, chemotherapy, antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, radiation, local c

Our objective was to determine the factors involved in the development of shoulder dystocia in association with operative vaginal delivery. In this prospective study, patients who were candidates for operative vaginal delivery were randomized either to forceps (N = 315) or vacuum with M-cup (N = 322) and timed from initial placement of instrument to final delivery. Data were gathered prior to and after instrumental delivery. Statistics used were Pearson chi square, Fisher's exact, analysis of variance, and multiple logistic regression. There were a total of 21 patients with shoulder dystocia i

Arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears is an option for a surgeon with advanced arthroscopic skills and a thorough knowledge of open repair technique. Surgical indications and a detailed description of operative technique are presented. Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair offers theoretical advantages over open repair, but long-term studies are needed to demonstrate its effectiveness.

We encountered two patients with atraumatic rotator cuff tears who exhibited inferior subluxation of the humeral head. In both patients shoulder motion was limited by pain. Repair of the rotator cuff tear relieved the pain and restored glenohumeral joint motion. Although the cause of this unusual complication of rotator cuff damage remains unclear, the inferior subluxation was associated with reflex muscle hypotonia, which would have reduced the pressure in the subacromial space and thus would have decreased the pain caused by the cuff lesion. No similar case seems to have been documented in t
