Impact of Non-Motor Symptoms on Quality of Life in Patients with Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) refers to patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) whose age at disease onset is less than 50 years. Literature on the non-motor symptoms (NMS) in these patients is very limited in the Indian context. We aimed to study the NMS in patients with EOPD and its impact on the quality of life (QoL). METHODS: We included 124 patients with EOPD with a mean age at disease onset between 21 and 45 years and 60 healthy controls (HC). NMS were assessed using validated scales, and the QoL domains were evaluated using the PD QoL-39 scale (PDQ-39). RESULTS: Th

Cortical kappa opioid receptors integrate negative affect and sleep disturbance.

Sleep disruption and negative affect are attendant features of many psychiatric and neurological conditions that are often co-morbid including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and chronic pain. Whether there is a causal relationship between negative affect and sleep disruption remains unclear. We therefore asked if mechanisms promoting negative affect can disrupt sleep and whether inhibition of pathological negative affect can normalize disrupted sleep. Signaling at the kappa opioid receptor (KOR) elicits dysphoria in humans and aversive conditioning in animals. We teste

Prevalence of anxiety, depression, sleeping problems, cognitive impairment, and suicidal ideation in people with autoimmune skin diseases.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune skin diseases (ASDs) such as psoriasis and vitiligo, in addition to causing visible skin symptoms, are closely associated with psychological health issues. However, a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of these psychological comorbidities in affected individuals is lacking. This study aims to identify the prevalence of anxiety, depression, sleeping problems, cognitive impairment, and suicidal ideation in people with ASDs. METHOD: PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library searches were conducted from 1993 to May 2024. Observational studies reportin

Depression and fatigue six months post-COVID-19 disease are associated with overlapping symptom constellations: A prospective, multi-center, population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Depression and fatigue are commonly observed sequelae following viral diseases such as COVID-19. Identifying symptom constellations that differentially classify post-COVID depression and fatigue may be helpful to individualize treatment strategies. Here, we investigated whether self-reported post-COVID depression and post-COVID fatigue are associated with the same or different symptom constellations. METHODS: To address this question, we used data from COVIDOM, a population-based cohort study conducted as part of the NAPKON-POP platform. Data were collected in three different Germ

Factors associated with quality of life in Chinese people with psoriasis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The ultimate goal of medical care is to eradicate disease and restore normality to a person's life. Quality of life (QOL) is a concern as dermatologists and researchers strive to find better drug treatments. However, there have been few reports on the factors associated with QOL among Chinese people with psoriasis. METHODS: A total of 185 people with psoriasis were surveyed to assess their sociodemographic status, disease-related information, psychosocial status, and QOL. The questionnaires included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Athens Insomnia Scale, the Hospital Anxiety

Differences in symptom experience among patients with systemic sclerosis: a cluster analytic approach to identifying subgroups.

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of people who have SSc are heterogeneous and difficult to address clinically. Because diverse symptoms often co-occur and may share common underlying mechanisms, identifying symptoms that cluster together may better target treatment approaches. We sought to identify and characterize patient subgroups based on symptom experience. METHODS: An exploratory hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis was conducted to identify subgroups from a large SSc cohort from a single US academic medical centre. Patient-reported symptoms of pain interference, fatigue, sleep disturbance, d

Health status and associated factors of middle-aged and older adult cancer survivors in India: results from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India.

BACKGROUND: The number of persons who have survived cancer has been increasing in India as elsewhere due to advances in detection and treatment of this disease. However, evidence on the standardised number of cancer survivors, their characteristics and their complex health challenges on a national level does not exist due to data limitations. This study, therefore, examines the profile of cancer survivors and their health status using the recently released Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) survey data. METHODS: LASI wave 1 is a cross-sectional nationally representative survey of 65,56

Examining Sleep Disturbance Among Sheltered and Unsheltered Transition Age Youth Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: The estimated 3.5-million transition age youth (TAY) who experience homelessness in the United States annually are routinely exposed to inadequate sleep environments and other psychosocial risk factors for deficient sleep. Although staying in a shelter versus being unsheltered may facilitate sleep, research suggests that perceived safety wherever one sleeps may be just as important. In this study, which is the first known study to investigate sleep disturbances among TAY experiencing homelessness, we examine associations of sleep disturbances with sheltered status and perceived saf
