Effects of multidomain environmental and mental health factors on the development of empathetic behaviors and emotions in adolescence.

Empathy is at the core of our social world, yet multidomain factors that affect its development in socially sensitive periods, such as adolescence, are incompletely understood. To address this gap, this study investigated associations between social, environmental and mental health factors, and their temporal changes, on adolescent empathetic behaviors/emotions and, for comparison, callous unemotional (CU) traits and behaviors, in the early longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development sample (baseline: n = 11062; 2-year follow-up: n = 9832, median age = 119 and 144 months, respectively)

The stress-buffering role of friendships in young people with childhood threat experiences: a preliminary report.

Background: High-quality friendships have a positive impact on the mental health of young people with childhood adversity (CA). Social stress buffering, the phenomenon of a social partner attenuating acute stress responses, is a potential yet unexplored mechanism that may underlie this relationship. Objective: This study examined whether perceived friendship quality was related to better mental health and lower neural stress response in young people with CA.Method: A total of N = 102 young people (aged 16-26) with low to moderate CA were included in the study. We first investigated associations

Endogenous oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone in response to group singing.

Humans have sung together for thousands of years. Today, regular participation in group singing is associated with benefits across psychological and biological dimensions of human health. Here we examine the hypothesis that a portion of these benefits stem from changes in endocrine activity associated with affiliation and social bonding. Working with a young adult choir (n = 71), we measured changes salivary concentrations of oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone from before and after four experimental conditions crossing two factors: vocal production mode (singing vs. speaking) and social cont

Adolescent Social Stress Increases Anxiety-like Behavior and Alters Synaptic Transmission, Without Influencing Nicotine Responses, in a Sex-Dependent Manner.

Early-life stress is a risk factor for comorbid anxiety and nicotine use. Because little is known about the factors underlying this comorbidity, we investigated the effects of adolescent stress on anxiety-like behavior and nicotine responses within individual animals. Adolescent male and female C57BL/6J mice were exposed to chronic variable social stress (CVSS; repeated cycles of social isolation + social reorganization) or control conditions from postnatal days (PND) 25-59. Anxiety-like behavior and social avoidance were measured in the elevated plus-maze (PND 61-65) and social approach-avoid

Cognitive therapy vs interpersonal psychotherapy in social anxiety disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Cognitive therapy (CT) focuses on the modification of biased information processing and dysfunctional beliefs of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) aims to change problematic interpersonal behavior patterns that may have an important role in the maintenance of SAD. No direct comparisons of the treatments for SAD in an outpatient setting exist. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of CT, IPT, and a waiting-list control (WLC) condition. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Two academic outpatient treatment sites. Patients  Of 254 potential partici

Amygdala volume and nonverbal social impairment in adolescent and adult males with autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a syndrome of unknown cause, marked by abnormal development of social behavior. Attempts to link pathological features of the amygdala, which plays a key role in emotional processing, to autism have shown little consensus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate amygdala volume in individuals with autism spectrum disorders and its relationship to laboratory measures of social behavior to examine whether variations in amygdala structure relate to symptom severity. DESIGN: We conducted 2 cross-sectional studies of amygdala volume, measured blind to diagnosis on high-resolution, anatomical

The small group in problem-based learning: more than a cognitive 'learning' experience for first-year medical students in a diverse population.

In problem-based learning (PBL) curricula, first-year students need to adapt to a new learning environment and an unfamiliar new pedagogy. The small-group tutorial potentially offers a learning environment where students can become self-directed learners, collaborating with other group members to achieve individual and group learning goals. At the end of the first six-week theme in a relatively new PBL curriculum, new medical students were canvassed about coping with PBL (self-directed learning; content; time management; resources) and the value of the small-group tutorial, the latter of which

Navigating stillbirth in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review of maternal experiences.

BACKGROUND: Cultural beliefs, social expectations, and the quality of maternity care shape how women perceive stillbirth, cope with loss, and navigate their identity after bereavement. Understanding these experiences is essential for improving emotional support and respectful care. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise qualitative evidence regarding the psychosocial impact of stillbirth on women in LMIC contexts, and to examine how cultural, social, and healthcare factors shape women's perceptions and experiences of stillbirth. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in February 2026 across the follow

Syndemics of complex risk factors in adolescents: findings from the youth risk behavior survey, 2021.

Syndemic theory posits that multiple, interconnected health behaviors-such as substance use, anxiety, depression, sexual risk behaviors, and societal or social stressors-interact synergistically within specific populations, particularly in those who face social disadvantage. These health behaviors are not isolated, but are shaped and exacerbated by social, economic, and environmental factors. Using data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (N = 17,232), this cross-sectional study examined how the co-occurrence of substance use, mental health challenges, sexual risk behaviors,

Early Childhood Communication Neglect and Mental Health Outcomes in Adults Who Are Deaf: Examining the Role of Social and Communication Health as Moderators.

INTRODUCTION: Communication neglect, a recently identified adverse childhood communication experience unique to children who are deaf, is linked to increased risk of chronic diseases and mental health diagnosis in adulthood. This study utilizes patient-reported outcome data to examine the association between adverse childhood communication experience and self-reported symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, and fatigue. The authors also investigated the potential moderating role of communication health and social support in adulthood in the relationship between childhood communication neglect

Implicit social animations lead to distinct changes of dopaminergic, corticostriatal and thalamocortical functional connectivity in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Theory of mind (ToM) is a central pillar of social cognition and crucial for effective social interactions. Impairment in ToM is a major predictor of global functioning in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD). Based on the hypothesis that subcortical and reward circuit functional connectivity is distinct in SCZ and BPD and can be better revealed using ToM task-based approaches, we tested whether functional connectivity patterns of cortico-subcortical networks are a discriminative feature of these disorders. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study (n = 60) to investi…

The glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, Ex4, reduces intromission in sexually experienced male mice.

The physiological effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) are vast, including food and glucose homeostasis. As the half-life is short, both short-acting, exendin-4 (Ex4) and long-acting, liraglutide and dulaglutide, GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists have been developed and are approved for type 2 diabetes and/or obesity. They have also been found to reduce behaviors linked to addictive drugs through involvement of mesolimbic brain regions such as the medial amygdala. Additionally, Ex4 reduces sexual interactions in sexually naïve male mice and experienced females. However, the effects of GLP

What Makes Adolescents Defend Others Against Cyberhate? Insights From the Normative Social Behavior, Social Learning, and Planned Behavior Theories.

Most adolescents experience cyberhate primarily as bystanders. Understanding their behavior, particularly their defending behaviors, is crucial to mitigate the phenomenon and its negative effects. While prior studies have explored factors influencing these responses, further research is needed to understand how these factors interact within robust theoretical frameworks. To address this gap, this study examined adolescents' defending behaviors to cyberhate through three psychological theories: (1) the Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB; social norms); (2) Social Learning Theory (SLT; so

Intersectional inequalities in somatic symptom severity: A trans-diagnostic MAIHDA analysis of SOMACROSS data.

Persistent somatic symptoms are common and contribute substantially to population health burden. However, the intersectional social patterning of somatic symptom burden remains insufficiently understood. This study examined inequalities in somatic symptom severity across intersections of gender, educational attainment, and migration history. Utilizing a trans-diagnostic patient sample (including the diagnoses primary biliary and primary sclerosing cholangitis, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic kidney disease, pruritus, and somatic symptom disorder; N = 1254) pooled from fiv

Striatal social reward sensitivity predicts trust-related brain responses depending on closeness and depression.

AIM: Depression is associated with social dysfunction, but the mechanisms linking affective symptoms to disrupted close relationships remain understudied. It is also unclear whether neural sensitivity to shared reward predicts social valuation during more complex interactions, with the possibility of depression altering the link between how people experience rewards shared with and trust reciprocated by close others. Thus, this preregistered fMRI study tested whether neural sensitivity to shared reward cross-task predicts trust-related behavior and brain responses, and whether these associatio

Health follows football: a reflexive thematic analysis of culture, masculinity, and men's wellbeing in recreational football.

Men carrying the greatest burden of preventable ill health are among the least likely to be reached by conventional health promotion. Football-based initiatives have demonstrated capacity to engage such men, yet the cultural mechanisms through which sustained engagement and health outcomes are achieved remain poorly understood. This paper explores how football culture and the organizational culture of the Football Cooperative (FC) initiative, an Irish social enterprise using recreational football as a gender-responsive mechanism for men's health, interact to sustain engagement and create condi

Linguistic and Behavioral Mechanisms of Cyberbullying Among Chinese Social Media Users: A Scoping Review.

Cyberbullying among Chinese social media users has been described in relation to hostile words, pragmatic meanings, group alignment, identity positioning, and platform-mediated amplification. This scoping review mapped the linguistic and behavioral mechanisms reported in English-language studies indexed in Scopus and Web of Science concerning target-directed harm in Chinese social media contexts. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, Levac refinements, and PRISMA-ScR guidance, searches of Scopus and Web of Science identified 592 records. The 2015-2025 publication-date criterion was appl

Social and contextual memory impairments induced by Amyloid-β oligomers are rescued by Sigma-1 receptor activation.

Sigma-1 receptors (S1Rs) are widely expressed throughout the central nervous system and modulate neuron intracellular calcium levels, leading to changes in neurotransmitter release and neuronal activity. They also interact with various proteins and signaling pathways, playing a key role in regulating synaptic plasticity in brain areas such as the hippocampus, thereby influencing learning and memory processes. This opens a research avenue to explore S1R modulation as a potential therapeutic target in diseases involving hippocampal synaptic alterations and compromised cognitive processes, such a
