X-linked scapuloperoneal syndrome.

Observations are presented on a family with muscular weakness and wasting with an onset in childhood, predominantly affecting the proximal muscles in the upper limbs and the distal muscles in the lower. This was accompanied by contractures of the elbows and by pes cavus. Pseudohypertrophy was absent. Progression was slow, but an associated cardiomyopathy developed in adult life. Investigations favoured a myopathic basis. The inheritance was of X-linked recessive pattern and the disorder was linked with deutan colour blindness. The clinical features in this family appear to be distinctive and i

Plaque size heterogeneity: a genetic trait of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

All of the ten strains of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus assayed on BHK 21/13S cells showed various degrees of plaque size heterogeneity. The amount of virus released from these plaques was usually very small because of rapid photodynamic inactivation by neutral red. When virus from large and small plaques of a specific strain was plated, the same distribution of plaque size was obtained from each clone. Although it was shown that surface virus could possibly be randomly distributed at the time of addition of neutral red overlays, no virus could be isolated from nonplaque areas. Two differ

The Effects of Placental Mesenchymal Stem Cells Labeled With Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxides on the Growth of Colorectal Cancer Cells.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, with effective intervention and treatment being essential for CRC management. This study investigated the effects of human placental mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs) labeled with ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxides (USPIOs) on the growth of CRC cells and the feasibility of 3.0-T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging as an in vivo tracer. METHODS: Twenty subcutaneous CRC HT-29 xenograft model in immunodeficient mice was established. Mice injected with labeled PMSCs were considered as the experimental group. T

A "field change" of inhibited apoptosis occurs in colorectal mucosa adjacent to colorectal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is associated with a "field change" of increased proliferation throughout the colonic and rectal mucosa. Both proliferation and apoptosis are disrupted during carcinogenesis. Whether altered apoptosis contributes to this field change of microscopic abnormality is, however, unclear. Bcl-xL is an anti-apoptotic protein that inhibits apoptosis by preventing release of cytochrome c, a recognised pathway to cell death. AIM: To determine whether Bcl-xL inhibition of apoptosis is increased in colorectal mucosa adjacent to colorectal adenocarcinoma over that in normal no

Motor neuronal and glial apoptosis in the adult facial nucleus after intracranial nerve transection.

OBJECT: Intracranial lesions affecting the facial nerve are usually associated with significant morbidity and poor functional restitution, despite the fact that a peripheral nerve injury normally recovers well. Mechanistic explanations are needed to direct future therapies. Although neonatal motor neurons are known to die as a result of apoptosis after axotomy, this cell death mechanism has not been explicitly demonstrated after peripheral cranial nerve transection in adult mammals. METHODS: The authors induced substantial retrograde neuronal death in the adult rodent by transecting the facia

Mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation in the human eye and brain: implications for the retinopathy of long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the choriocapillaris are affected early in the retinopathy associated with long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency. RPE in culture possesses the machinery needed for mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation in vitro. To further elucidate pathogenesis of LCHAD retinopathy, we performed immunohistochemistry of the human eye and brain with antibodies to beta-oxidation enzymes. Human eye and brain sections were stained with antibodies to medium-chain (MCAD) and very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD), short-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-Co
