Labia Minora, Labia Majora, and Clitoral Hood Alteration: Experience-Based Recommendations-A 10-Year Follow-up Report.

This article reports an experience-based 10-year follow-up of a January 2016 Aesthetic Surgery Journal paper that reviewed over 600 cases of labiaplasty and clitoral hood alteration. Long-term follow-up reports of published articles have been recommended to evaluate the original paper's results and conclusions. This is a summary of the author's subsequent labiaplasty experience, evaluating his original technical suggestions and caveats for their validity after performing an additional 800 female external genital aesthetic surgical procedures. The more recent experience of the author indicates

Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction for Patellar Instability in a Patient with Below-Knee Amputation: A Case Report.

CASE: A 15-year-old girl with a right below-knee amputation (due to meningococcal septicemia and purpura fulminans) presented with patellar instability and Type D trochlear dysplasia. Management was complicated by extensive scarring and 8 prior residual limb revisions. To address instability, the patient underwent medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction using an ipsilateral semitendinosus autograft, following MRI verification of tendon viability. At 12-month follow-up, stability was restored, allowing successful return to active prosthesis use and mobility without complications.

Paediatric tracheal carcinoid with carinal involvement and nodal metastasis: challenging airway reconstruction with oncological clearance.

Tracheal carcinoid tumours are exceptionally rare neuroendocrine neoplasms, particularly in the paediatric population. We present the case of a teenage girl with longstanding dyspnoea and intermittent haemoptysis, ultimately diagnosed with a typical carcinoid involving the distal trachea and both main bronchi. Bronchoscopy biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. She underwent tracheal resection and complex carinal reconstruction with cardiopulmonary bypass. Histopathology revealed a grade 1 typical carcinoid with metastatic involvement in two of five subcarinal lymph nodes. Postoperative recovery was

Salvaging a submental flap.

Surgery for oral malignancies is usually followed by reconstruction of the defect. Free flaps remain the ideal choice for reconstruction, but advocating for it may not be possible in all circumstances. The submental artery-based island flap (SMIF) is a well-known local flap for its high reliability, versatility and arc of rotation; however, venous congestion is a major reason for its failure.A 50-year-old man underwent surgery for carcinoma gingivobuccal sulcus, which involved reconstruction of the oral defect with SMIF. The flap developed venous congestion 17 hours following surgery. The flap

Single-Stage Versus 2-Stage Facial Reanimation With a Free Functional Muscle Flap: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Facial paralysis is a condition that has several etiologies and is associated with significant physical and psychosocial complications. Classically, 2-stage facial reanimation was used to treat patients with unilateral facial paralysis; however, single-stage facial reanimation has seen an increase in use. Studies comparing both techniques are limited, and to the best of our knowledge, no systematic reviews have compared these techniques. OBJECTIVE: We aim to perform a systematic review that explores how the outcomes of single-stage facial reanimation with a free functional muscle

Cutibacterium avidum: A virulent pathogen in esthetic surgery infection, a case series.

Cutibacterium avidum is a member of the skin microbiota whose composition changes with age. Recently, it has been implicated in infections associated with implants and other medical devices, and it is now recognized as an etiological agent of surgical site infections. We present six cases of surgical site infections following aesthetic surgery: three cases linked to gluteal implants, one to gluteoplasty without implants, one to liposuction and one to abdominoplasty. Previously, C. avidum was considered a contaminant; however, recent findings indicate virulence factors and pathogenic behavior,

The Pedicled Deep Temporalis Muscle Flap in Endoscopic Transorbital Approach: How I Do It.

Minimally invasive skull base techniques are increasingly adopted for their reduced morbidity and improved cosmetic outcomes. This study presents an endoscopic transorbital approach (TOA) for skull base surgery and introduces a novel reconstruction technique using a pedicled deep temporalis muscle flap. Preclinical and clinical results demonstrate its feasibility, safety, and potential for broader surgical use.

[A Rare Case of Sclerosing Odontogenic Carcinoma of the Maxilla].

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma(SOC)is a rare malignancy first reported by Koutlas in 2008 and was classified as an odontogenic carcinoma according to the World Health Organization(WHO)classification in 2017. In this report, we describe a rare case of SOC in the maxilla of a patient who underwent radical tumor resection via partial maxillectomy and immediate reconstruction using an ulnar forearm flap. CASE: A 55-year-old woman was referred to our department with the chief complaint of swelling of the right maxillary gingiva. Initial examination revealed swelling of the right ma

Functional reconstruction following bilateral amputation of the manus and pes in a cat with frostbite injury.

This case report describes metacarpophalangeal (MCP)- and metatarsophalangeal (MTP)-level amputation and reconstruction of all 4 paws of a young female domestic shorthair cat. All 4 paws, the ears, and the distal portion of the tail underwent severe frostbite injury resulting in tissue death. Following MCP and MTP amputation, weight-bearing surface reconstruction was achieved using metacarpal and metatarsal paw-pad advancement flaps. Remaining open wounds on non-weight-bearing surfaces were reconstructed using full-thickness skin grafts. All limbs healed uneventfully, allowing return to weight

Dynamic procedures for eyelid involvement in facial nerve palsy.

Dynamic reconstructive techniques of the eyelid in facial nerve palsy aim to restore or replace spontaneous and voluntary movement. These may include transfer and graft techniques of nerve and muscle. The role of these procedures from an ophthalmic and oculoplastic perspective is yet to be established. We conducted a literature review of studies of periocular dynamic reanimation and their methodology, and the findings were critically appraised. Common weaknesses were identified, such as a lack of robust assessment of the ocular surface, failure to differentiate effortful closure from spontaneo

Masquelet induced cranial membrane under silicone layer during cranioplasty: Toward a natural technique for regeneration of meninges after decompressive craniectomy.

Reconstruction of the meninges and secondary hydrocephalus are salient issues following decompressive craniectomy. We propose a simple technique using a silicone sheet leaning on the opened dura mater and the brain during decompressive craniectomy. During cranioplasty, the removal of the silicone layer reveals that a new translucent and highly vascularized membrane has been naturally generated underneath, covering the dura mater flaps and the brain. We believe that this new cranial membrane arising from Masquelet's technique could allow covering large meningeal defects notably after wartime cr

A novel incision design for Vibrant SoundBridge®︎ implantation prior to auricular reconstruction for microtia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present and evaluate a surgical approach for placing a Vibrant Soundbridge® (VSB) device prior to auricular reconstruction in patients with microtia atresia. The goal was to determine whether an incision line for VSB implantation, located sufficiently posterior to the planned area of auricular reconstruction, could prevent interference with subsequent auricular surgeries and ensure stable hearing outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively examined four patients with unilateral microtia who underwent VSB implantation before auricular reconstruction. The incision line

Reconstructive surgery to preserve ankle function in a 5-year-old girl with bilobed distal tibia in an unclassified case of tibial hemimelia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tibial hemimelia is an uncommon congenital abnormality ranging from a solitary skeletal deformity to associations with other syndromes. Despite Paley et al.'s detailed classification of tibial hemimelia, some unique sporadic cases still do not fit within this system. In 2021, Chong et al. proposed the most recent surgical approach based on the Paley classification, which inspired cases such as ours. CASE PRESENTATION: This case study presents a novel case of tibial hemimelia characterized by a bilobed distal tibia, a shortened first ray, and an equinovarus deformity in a 5-year-ol

Current Research Progress in Cranioplasty and Related Repair Materials.

Skull defect is a common and challenging clinical problem in the field of neurosurgery, which can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as brain trauma, brain tumor resection, intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, cerebral edema, skull fracture, or infection. Skull defect not only weakens the protection of brain tissue, increasing the risk of potential neurological deficits and seizures, but also seriously affects the patient's appearance and quality of life. Therefore, from the patient's perspective, the repair of skull defects is often driven by the dual needs of aesthetics and fun

Efficiency and outcomes in microvascular anastomosis: A meta-analysis of mechanical versus manual techniques.

Microvascular anastomosis plays a critical role in free flap transfers, aiming to reduce ischemia time, minimize vessel trauma, and optimize ease of use. This meta-analysis compares coupler devices and hand-sewn techniques for venous anastomosis across all types of free flaps, with a subgroup analysis focused on head and neck reconstruction. A comprehensive literature search following PRISMA guidelines was conducted across multiple databases up to November 6, 2024. Eighteen retrospective comparative studies met the inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 3184 articles. The overall flap loss

Exploring the optimal reconstruction strategy for Enneking III defects in pelvis bone tumors: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists regarding the reconstruction of bone defects in Enneking III. This study aimed to use the finite element analysis (FEA) method to clarify (1) the utility of reconstructing the pelvis Enneking III region and (2) the optimal approach for this reconstruction. METHODS: FEA models were generated for three types of Enneking III defects in the pelvis, replacing all the defect areas in region III with a sizable solid box for topology optimization (TO). Based on the defect location and TO results, three reconstruction schemes were designed for each type of defect. We sub

Scaphoid Reconstruction Following Nonunion in Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Case Report.

CASE: An 11-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type 1 presented with a chronic scaphoid waist nonunion accompanied by cyst formation and dorsal intercalated segment instability. He had a history of treatment with bisphosphonate therapy and discontinued zoledronate 3 months before surgery. He underwent scaphoid reconstruction using nonvascularized, corticocancellous bone graft from the iliac crest and a buried headless compression screw. Within 12 weeks, imaging demonstrated union with bony remodeling and he resumed zoledronate. CONCLUSION: Temporary discontinuation of bisphosphona

The origins of limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery date back to 1521 when the first intervention ever reported in history was performed on St. Ignatius of Loyola.

PURPOSE: To explore the historical case of Saint Ignatius of Loyola's leg injury and subsequent surgical interventions as a potential early instance of limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery. METHODS: A detailed analysis of "A Pilgrim's Journey" (Ignatius of Loyola's autobiography) was conducted, focusing on orthopaedic descriptions of his injury and treatments. RESULTS: In 1521, Íñigo López de Loyola sustained a severe, comminuted open fracture of the tibia due to a cannonball wound during the siege of Pamplona. Initial attempts at reduction were unsuccessful, leading to a non-union wi

Benefits of combined hind-foot alignment and medial arch reconstruction surgery in children with flexible flatfoot: a case-series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Although surgical alignment of the rear-foot might be sufficient to achieve acceptable correction of pronation-distortion deformity, concomitant correction of the medial arch might improve functional results. METHODS: We present our experience with combined hind-foot alignment and medial arch reconstruction by in-situ naviculocuneiform arthrodesis for treatment of flexible flatfoot in children. We retrospectively evaluated clinical data available from pediatric (< 18 years old) patients treated for flexible flatfoot in our department. RESULTS: We performed 160 surgical correcti
