The failure of inhibition hypothesis posits a theoretical distinction between implicit and explicit access in deep dyslexia. Specifically, the effects of failure of inhibition are assumed only in conditions that have an explicit selection requirement in the context of production (i.e., aloud reading). In contrast, the failure of inhibition hypothesis proposes that implicit processing and explicit access to semantic information without production demands are intact in deep dyslexia. Evidence for intact implicit and explicit access requires that performance in deep dyslexia parallels that observ

Our visual environment consists of information ranging from coarse to fine patterns with respect to spatial frequency (SF). Neurophysiological studies using experimental animals have shown that there exist specific SF channels in striate and extrastriate visual cortices. In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and healthy subjects to investigate whether manipulation of the SF of visual images modulates neural responses in the temporo-occipital lobes. Subjects were scanned while performing "one-back task" with high-pass or low-pass filtered image

INTRODUCTION: Topographic disorientation is defined as the difficulty to find one s way in familiar surroundings. It can be due to an amnesic or agnostic like defect, which is known as topographic amnesia or agnosia. This disorder can give rise to disability in the life of the patient and may well go undetected unless a suitable neuropsychological study is conducted.
CASE REPORTS: We report the cases of two patients with infarction in the territory of the right posterior cerebral artery who began with hemianopsia and topographic disorientation. One of the cases was due to a disorder affecting

Twelve patients with hemispatial neglect and two control groups were tested to examine the effects of the Müller-Lyer and Judd illusions on bisection behaviour. The studies were designed to investigate whether neglect patients were indeed unaware of the left sides of the illusory figures. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to describe the illusory figures prior to bisection, whereas in Experiment 2, they compared two illusions whose fins, in the critical condition, differed on the left and then performed the bisection. It was found that the illusions worked equally well in all three grou

An international group of clinical and basic scientists participated in the Frontotemporal Dementia and Pick's Disease Criteria Conference at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md, on July 7, 2000, to reassess clinical and neuropathological criteria for the diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Previous criteria for FTD have primarily been designed for research purposes. The goal of this meeting was to propose guidelines that would enable clinicians (particularly neurologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists) to recognize patients with FTD and, if appropriate, to expedi

A case of cerebral amyloid angiopathy is presented with MR imaging findings of high intense signal on T2-weighted sequences at the level of the white and gray matter of both hemispheres in the absence of neuroradiologic signs of cerebral hemorrhage. The biopsy specimen revealed deposition of amyloid in the walls of the intracranial arterial branches and focal ischemic changes and gliosis in the gray and white matter. We consider this presentation to be very unusual in patients affected by cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: When we view static scenes that imply motion - such as an object dropping off a shelf - recognition memory for the position of the object is extrapolated forward. It is as if the object in our mind's eye comes alive and continues on its course. This phenomenon is known as representational momentum and results in a distortion of recognition memory in the implied direction of motion. Representational momentum is modifiable; simply labelling a drawing of a pointed object as 'rocket' will facilitate the effect, whereas the label 'steeple' will impede it. We used functional magnetic res

Previous neuroimaging studies have identified a large network of cortical areas involved in semantic processing in the human brain, which includes left occipito-temporal and inferofrontal areas. Most studies, however, investigated exclusively the associative/functional semantic knowledge by using mainly words and/or language related tasks, and this factor may have contributed to the large left hemisphere superiority found in semantic processing and to the controversial involvement of left prefrontal structures. The present study investigates the neural basis of visual objects knowledge, access

Paragangliomas of the CNS are relatively rare. Cases of location in the pineal and pituitary glands, cerebellopontine angle, cauda equina and filum terminale are known. In our neurosurgical unit a 42-year-old male patient with a history of vertigo and a generalized seizure underwent an operation for a fronto-temporal tumour. The histological diagnosis was paraganglioma.

The neuropsychological follow-up study of a 58-year-old man suffering from Motor Neuron Disease (ALS/MND) and Fronto-Temporal Dementia (FTD) is reported. Neuromuscular signs first appeared at the age of 51 and slowly progressed to late bulbar involvement; behavioural symptoms of the frontal type first appeared around age 53; lastly, several neuropsychological symptoms suggestive of worsening temporal involvement supervened at age 57. Our patient died at 59 of respiratory failure with the classic clinical and neuroradiological picture of FTD. A short discussion addresses the controversial issue

We report an investigation into the processing of symmetrical lexical stimuli by a patient with moderate visual neglect. This subject's neglect dyslexia was significantly less pronounced when presented with symmetrical lexical stimuli (palindromes) than with matched non-symmetrical words. We discuss the hypothesis that symmetry facilitates processing.

Deep dyslexia is a striking reading disorder that results from left-hemisphere brain damage and is characterized by semantic errors in reading single words aloud (e.g., reading 'spirit' as 'whisky'). Two types of explanation for this syndrome have been advanced. One is that deep dyslexia results from a residual left-hemisphere reading system that has lost the ability to pronounce a printed word without reference to meaning. The second is that deep dyslexia reflects right-hemisphere word processing. Although previous attempts to adjudicate between these hypotheses have been inconclusive, the co

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a common neurodegenerative dementia syndrome. Compulsive behaviors frequently occur in FTD and may be presenting symptoms of this disorder. This study evaluated compulsive behaviors as presenting symptoms in 29 patients with FTD compared to 48 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) enrolled in the UCLA Alzheimer's Disease Center. The FTD patients met the Lund and Manchester criteria for FTD and had predominant frontal hypoperfusion on single-photon emission computer tomography neuroimaging. The AD patients met National Institute of Neurological and Communicativ

A 2-year-old boy meeting the criteria for autistic disorder was diagnosed 2 years later with a visual agnosia characterised by a combination of certain aspects of associative and apperceptive agnosia. MRI then revealed a severe encephalomalacia of the right temporal lobe and bilateral temporo-occipital areas. This association is discussed in terms of a clinical and aetiological relation between autistic disorder and visual agnosia.

Because crack cocaine appears to have a preferential effect on the metabolic and electrophysiological activity of the frontal and temporal regions of the brain (Pascual-Leone et al., 1991a, 1991b; Volkow, 1992), we hypothesized that cognitive measures of those regions would be impaired in crack cocaine users relative to measures in normal volunteers. We used logistic regression to determine the relationship of cocaine usage to neuropsychological test performance. We compared 38 patients with an average of 3.6 (SD = 2.5) years of crack cocaine use and 24.5 (SD = 28.1) days of abstinence to 54 n

A single case study is reported of a global aphasic patient, JM, with impaired access to semantic information which was particularly severe for the class of proper names. JM's ability to perform matching tasks with printed words and pictures to auditory words deteriorated when items were repeated, especially when the response-stimulus interval was short. Performance was also inconsistent across items. The effect of repeated testing on items generalised to other, previously untested members of the same category. Despite this, JM was able to access general semantic information about stimuli from

To test the hypothesis of left temporoparietal dysfunction in dyslexia, suggested by neuropsychological and neuropathologic data, cerebral blood flow was measured with positron emission tomography in 14 right-handed men with severe developmental dyslexia (mean [SD] age, 27 [5] years; median reading level, fifth grade) and 14 matched controls at rest and during an auditory phonologic task (rhyme detection) and an auditory attention task involving the detection of target tones. As expected, normal readers activated left temporoparietal cortex during rhyme detection but not during the nonphonolog
