Electroretinographic (ERG) responses in pediatric patients using vigabatrin.

The antiepileptic drug vigabatrin is known to cause retinal and visual dysfunction, particularly visual field defects, in some patients. Electroretinography (ERG) is used in an attempt to identify adverse effects of vigabatrin (VGB) in patients who are not candidates for conventional perimetry. We report data from 114 pediatric patients taking VGB referred for clinical evaluation; median age at test was 22.9 (2.4 to 266.1) months, and median duration of VGB use was 9.7 (0.3 to 140.7) months. Twenty-seven of them were tested longitudinally (3 to 12 ERG tests). ERG responses to full-field stimul

Curve walking is not better than straight walking in estimating ambulation-related domains after incomplete spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether a figure-of-8-shaped walking test can estimate various domains of walking in subjects with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) better than the 10-meter walk test (10MWT), and to explore similarities and differences between the 2 tests and between subjects with iSCI and age-matched, healthy controls. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Spinal cord injury center of a university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of subjects with iSCI (n=15; mean age, 50y; 40% women; neurologic level from C3 to L5; median time since injury, 5mo) was compared with

Cataract halos: a driving hazard in aging populations. Implication of the Halometer DG test for assessment of intraocular light scatter.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Cataract, regardless of etiology, results in light scatter and subjective glare. Senile cataract is emerging as a crucial factor in driving safely, particularly in night driving and adverse weather conditions. The authors examined this visual impairment using a new Halometer DG test in the eyes of older adult drivers with and without cataract. METHOD: Examined subjects consisted of n=65 older adults with cataract in one or both eyes and n=72 adult drivers who did not have a cataract in either eye. Subjects were examined for distance high contrast visual acuity (VA) a

SLUG: Vision-Based UAV Self-Localization in GNSS-Denied Urban Environments.

In complex environments such as cities and canyons, cross-view matching of UAV and satellite imagery serves as a complementary approach to self-localization in the absence of GNSS signals. To address the limitations of existing datasets-namely their limited variety of scenes and low annotation accuracy-we have constructed the Cross-View, Multi-Altitude, Multi-Scene UAV Localization Dataset (CMHUAV). This dataset covers nine adjacent, non-overlapping subregions in Hangzhou and comprises 8625 precisely matched pairs of drone and satellite images, providing high-precision supervision for cross-vi

Foundation model-based haemoglobin concentration estimation and anaemia risk assessment from retinal fundus images.

INTRODUCTION: Widespread screening of anaemia is currently limited by the need for invasive blood tests. This study's primary objective was to evaluate the feasibility and interpretability of Vision Transformer (ViT)-based foundation models, including those pretrained on natural or medical domains, for the noninvasive estimation of haemoglobin (Hb) levels using retinal fundus images. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 34,511 individuals from the Health Promotion Center of Seoul National University Hospital (2005-2016). We adapted five foundation models (DINOv2, OpenCLI

Targeted Adversarial Camouflage Texture for Fooling Object Detectors via Native Supervision Redirection.

Adversarial camouflage has attracted growing research attention owing to its ability to execute multi-view, persistent attacks in real physical environments, outperforming conventional single-view adversarial patches. However, most existing methods are confined to non-targeted attacks, which induce arbitrary incorrect detection results without specifying target categories. This ambiguity weakens attack destructiveness and stealthiness, posing limitations for security evaluation of real-world vision systems. To address this gap, we present TACT, an approach built upon the full-coverage physical

Chronic methanol exposure induces cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's-like pathology in rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: The absence of effective animal models for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains a pivotal barrier to therapy development. Because methanol metabolism produces endogenous formaldehyde, a neurotoxic agent linked to cognitive decline, this study investigated whether chronic, low-dose methanol exposure could recapitulate AD-like pathology and cognitive deficits in rhesus monkey, thereby establishing a nonhuman primate animal model driven by this environmental-metabolic insult. METHODS: Adult rhesus monkeys received low-concentration methanol for 9 months. Behavioral tests for cog

How to treat cardiovascular autonomic failure in Parkinson's disease.

Cardiovascular autonomic failure is a frequent non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) that affects up to one third of individuals from the premotor to the advanced stages of the disease, with major diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic implications. It may manifest with orthostatic, post-prandial or exercise-induced hypotension, as well as hypertensive episodes in the supine position during wakefulness or nocturnal sleep. Hypotensive episodes may remain asymptomatic or manifest with symptoms of end-organ hypoperfusion in the upright position, after meals or during exertion that may inc

Mental Health Profiles in Children and Adolescents with Visual Impairment: The Role of Syndromic Etiology and Vision Severity.

Background: Visual impairment is associated with mental health difficulties in children, yet emotional and behavioral profiles across different etiologies and levels of visual impairment remain poorly characterized. We investigated whether these outcomes were associated with syndromic etiology or visual impairment severity. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, parents of 69 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years with visual impairment completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18). Participants were grouped by etiology (syndromic, n = 14; non-syndromic, n = 55) and by visual impairmen

Ophthalmic Inflammation: Evolving Strategies and Therapeutic Hurdles.

Ophthalmic inflammation includes a variety of eye disorders that can severely impact vision and overall quality of life. Despite substantial progress in diagnostic modalities and the development of targeted therapies, the effective management of ophthalmic inflammation continues to pose significant challenges. These challenges arise from the intricate interplay of immune pathways, heterogeneity of clinical manifestations, and the high propensity for treatment-associated adverse effects. Traditional therapeutic approaches, including corticosteroids and systemic immunosuppressants, though initia

Multimodal Learning with Privileged Report Supervision for Generalizable Tuberculosis Detection on Chest Radiographs.

Multimodal learning using images and associated clinical text offers richer semantic supervision for medical AI. However, models trained with synthetic reports risk hallucination, and conventional multimodal tuberculosis (TB) systems are impractical because they require text at inference. In realworld screening workflows, particularly in low-resource settings or during triage, radiology reports are often unavailable or delayed. Computer-aided detection systems for chest X-rays (CXRs) are considered a potential solution. In this context, this study proposes a method that uses clinically grounde

Genetic ablation of the TET family in retinal progenitor cells impairs photoreceptor development and leads to blindness.

The retina is responsible for converting light into electrical signals that, when transmitted to the brain, create the sensation of vision. The mammalian retina is epigenetically unique since the differentiation of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) into retinal cells is accompanied by a decrease in DNA methylation in the promoters of many genes important for retinal development and function. However, the pathway responsible for DNA demethylation and its role in retinal development and function were unknown. We hypothesized that the Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) family of dioxygenases plays a ke

Diagnostic Approach to Abnormal Alkaline Phosphatase Value.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is abundantly represented in nature, being fundamental for a number of processes. In addition to its fundamental function in skeletal mineralization, its roles in the pathogenesis of other diseases are being explored. The measurement of total ALP activity in serum or in plasma is a useful biomarker in clinical practice. Indeed, routine measurement of serum total ALP is a long-standing established part of initial biochemical evaluation of patients both in the hospital setting and on an ambulatory basis. Raised or reduced values of this enzyme activity are indicative o

Tracking-Based Denoising: A Trilateral Filter-Based Denoiser for Real-World Surveillance Video in Extreme Low-Light Conditions.

Video denoising in extremely low-light surveillance scenarios is a challenging task in computer vision, as it suffers from harsh noise and insufficient signal to reconstruct fine details. The denoising algorithm for these scenarios encounters challenges such as the lack of ground truth, and the noise distribution in the real world is far more complex than in a normal scene. Consequently, recent state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods like VRT and Turtle for video denoising perform poorly in this low-light environment. Additionally, some methods rely on raw video data, which is difficult to obtain from

First Application of a Novel Brain Template: Motor Training Improves Cortico-cerebellar Connectivity in Cerebellar Ataxia.

People with cerebellar degeneration show characteristic ataxic motor impairments. Despite cerebellar dysfunction, they can improve motor performance through sensorimotor training. Yet, how such training changes functional brain networks affected by cerebellar degeneration is unknown. We here investigated neuroplastic changes in the cortico-cerebellar network after a 5-d forearm training in 40 patients with mild to severe cerebellar degeneration and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Human participants (41 female) were assigned to one of four motor training conditions, varying online vis
