INTRODUCTION: Older age has been associated to serious adverse events (AE) following yellow fever (YF) vaccination in passive surveillance studies, but few prospective studies involving seniors have been published.
RESULTS: A total of 906 persons were evaluated; 78 were not vaccinated and 828 received the vaccine; 700 (84.7%) were interviewed after vaccination: 593 (84.7%) did not report any symptoms or signs following YF vaccine; 107 (15.3%) reported at least one AE temporally associated to YF vaccination: 97 (13.9%) had systemic AE and 17 (2.4%) reported AE at the injection site (7 had both…

A nationwide epidemic of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) occurred in Yugoslavia in 1989. Sera from 609 hospitalized patients, from all six Republics (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro Serbia, Slovenia) and two Provinces (Kosovo and Vojvodina), who had signs and symptoms suggestive of HFRS, and sera and lung tissues from 544 small mammals belonging to 13 species were studied for evidence of hantavirus infection. Of the 226 patients with serologically confirmed HFRS, 182 resided in Bosnia and Hercegovina or in Serbia. The severity of disease differed from region

Mosquitoes act as a vector for most of the life-threatening diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya fever, filariasis, encephalitis, West Nile Virus infection, etc. Under the Integrated Mosquito Management, emphasis was given on the application of alternative strategies in mosquito control. The continuous application of synthetic insecticides causes development of resistance in vector species, biological magnification of toxic substances through the food chain, and adverse effects on environmental quality and nontarget organisms including human health. Application of act…

The flavivirus NS1 protein is a component of the viral replication complex and plays diverse, yet poorly understood, roles in the viral life cycle. To enable real-time visualization of the developing replication organelle and biochemical analysis of tagged NS1 and its interacting partners, we engineered a replication-competent yellow fever virus (YFV) replicon encoding a C-terminal fusion of NS1 with green fluorescent protein (NS1-GFP). The initial variant was non-viable in the absence of trans-complementation with wild-type NS1; however, viability was partially restored through the introducti…

Mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise globally due to the shifting distribution of key disease vector species. Due to increased global trade and travel and increasing temperatures and changing precipitation patterns, the spread of mosquitoes and the increasing burden of their accompanying diseases like malaria, yellow fever, and dengue persist. Seeking sustainable control measures, there's growing interest in natural control, particularly through predators like amphibians, a globally threatened vertebrate group. However, the effectiveness of different natural predators and their role in an e…

BACKGROUND: The invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses, such as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever.
OBJECTIVE: As a first step toward a transmission model for vector-borne diseases, a weather-dependent population dynamic simulation for Ae. aegypti was developed, suitable for high weather short-term variability in the Austrian region.
METHODS: We developed an agent-based model, incorporating temperature- and precipitation-dependent development, mortality, movement, feeding behavior, and egg-laying. Species-specific parameters were derived from published exper…

OBJECTIVE: The clinical data of a child with complex parapneumonic effusion (PPE) caused by pneumofluke infection were analyzed, and the diagnosis and treatment of the disease were discussed through literature review. The effectiveness and safety of urokinase in the treatment of complex PPE and empyema caused by multiple pathogens were emphasized.
METHODS: A 3-year-old male child with pneumofluke infection was admitted to the pediatric department of Mianyang Central Hospital. Chest CT and chest ultrasound showed a right pleural effusion with dense septum formation. The condition was relieved

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Extralobar pulmonary sequestration with torsion is an exceptionally rare condition, especially in adults, and can present with nonspecific symptoms such as abdominal pain, making diagnosis challenging. Timely recognition is critical, as delayed treatment may lead to infarction and serious complications. This report describes the case of a patient with extralobar pulmonary sequestration who presented with abdominal pain.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old healthy female presented with increasing severe abdominal pain and mild fever that had developed for the past th

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is considered one of the effective and minimally invasive methods for managing lateral spreading tumors of the intestine. However, with the widespread adoption of this technique, the incidence of complications is expected to increase. The most common complications of ESD are hemorrhage and perforation. Rare cases of obstruction after colorectal ESD have been reported, which are often easily misdiagnosed. Therefore, clinicians should maintain heightened awareness of this complication.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 50-year-old male who

BACKGROUND: The mosquito's gut microbiota plays a crucial role in determining its capacity to transmit harmful viruses and parasites. Accordingly, manipulating mosquito gut microbiota is a promising avenue towards reducing mosquito-borne human pathogen transmission. A successful microbial control campaign will require a thorough understanding of how bacteria are transmitted through mosquito populations. Through two parallel but complementary studies using the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti as a focal host species, we surveyed vertical transmission of bacteria from individual mothers to co…

An arthropod's vectorial capacity summarizes its disease transmission potential. Life-history traits, such as fecundity or survival, and behavioral traits, such as locomotor activity, host-seeking and feeding behavior, are important components of vectorial capacity. Studies have shown that mosquito-borne pathogens may alter important vectorial capacity traits of their mosquito vectors, thus directly impacting their transmission and epidemic potential. Here, we compile and discuss the evidence supporting dengue-mediated changes in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.), its primary vector…

Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of diseases like Dengue, Zika, Yellow Fever, and Chikungunya, presents a significant public health challenge, particularly in tropical regions. With rising resistance to conventional insecticides, plant-derived bioinsecticides have emerged as a promising alternative. This study assessed the larvicidal potential of phytochemicals from Varronia curassavica, a species native to the Atlantic Forest. Microscopic analyses revealed various trichome types on V. curassavica leaves, including glandular trichomes containing essential oils, phenolic substances, lipids, al…

Obstructive jaundice occurs when an obstruction in the bile duct system prevents bile from flowing from the liver into the intestine, accumulating bilirubin in the blood. This condition can result from various causes, including gallstones, tumors, or inflammation of the bile ducts. The management of obstructive jaundice depends on the underlying cause (malignant obstructions such as cholangiocarcinoma or pancreatic cancer), indicating the need for surgical intervention. The Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) is the standard curative approach for resectable distal common bile duct (CBD

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a vector for various arboviruses, including dengue and yellow fever. Insecticides, such as pyrethroids and organophosphates, are widely used to manage and control these insects. However, mosquitoes have developed resistance to these chemicals. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of the commercial formulation of fipronil (Tuit® Florestal; 80% purity) on the survival, behavior, morphology, and proteins related to signaling pathways of the midgut in A. aegypti larvae under controlled laboratory conditions. Significant reductions in immature surviva…

We use the historical example of Walter Reed and the Yellow Fever Commission to illustrate this claim, and we also highlight some contemporary examples. We end by sketching some practical implications of our view, such as ensuring that investigators with experience running CHIs are involved in novel CHI models.
