Long-term exercise using weighted vests prevents hip bone loss in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) is a primary risk factor for hip fracture. We studied the effect of long-term weighted vest plus jumping exercise on hip BMD in postmenopausal women as a strategy for reducing hip fracture risk. METHODS: Eighteen postmenopausal women (age = 64.1 +/- 1.6 years at baseline, 69.9 +/- 1.6 years at post-testing) who had participated in a 9-month exercise intervention volunteered for the long-term trial. Nine of the original group engaged in weighted vest plus jumping exercise three times per week for 32 weeks of the year over a period of 5 years. Nine of the

Effects of exercise and disuse on bone remodeling, bone mass, and biomechanical competence in spontaneously diabetic female rats.

Diabetes is associated with low bone formation. In this study we investigate the effect of additional or reduced mechanical loading on indices of bone formation and resorption, bone mass, and biomechanical properties in spontaneously diabetic BB rats. Female diabetic (mean age 13 weeks) and age-matched control rats were each allocated to three experimental groups: no-intervention; supervised running exercise program (Ex); and unloading induced by unilateral sciatic neurectomy (USN). The study period was 8 weeks. We measured biochemical parameters of bone formation (plasma osteocalcin) and reso

Nephrocalcinosis and hyperlipidemia in rats fed a cholesterol- and fat-rich diet: association with hyperoxaluria, altered kidney and bone minerals, and renal tissue phospholipid-calcium interaction.

To determine whether an "atherogenic" diet (excess of cholesterol and neutral fat) induces pathological calcification in various organs, including the kidney, and abnormal oxalate metabolism, 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either normal lab chow (controls, n = 12) or the cholesterol- and fat-rich experimental diet (CH-F, n = 12) for 111 +/- 3 days. CH-F rats developed dyslipidemia [high blood levels of triglycerides, total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-bound cholesterol, total phospholipids], elevated serum total alk

Osteoporosis and implant failure: an exploratory case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis has been suggested as a risk factor for implant failure, but data supporting such a link are limited. METHODS: A case-control study was designed to evaluate the association between osteoporosis and dental implant failure. Cases (n = 49) and controls (n = 49) were selected from a private practice. The following measures were collected for each patient: 1) peripheral dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (pDEXA) bone measurements at the distal and proximal radius and ulna; 2) classification of bone quality and quantity at the time of implant placement; and 3) questionnaire d

A clinical evaluation of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft in combination with tetracycline in the treatment of periodontal osseous defects.

The purpose was to evaluate the use of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft reconstituted with 50 mg/ml tetracycline hydrochloride in the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects. Fifteen systemically healthy patients (12 females, 3 males; aged 35 to 61) with moderate-advanced periodontitis were treated. Patients had 3 osseous defects with probing depths (PD) > 5 mm after initial therapy. Each site in each subject was randomly assigned to one of the following groups: 1) demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft reconstituted with 50 mg/ml tetracycline (DFDBA + TCN); 2) demineralized fre

Effect of 17beta-estradiol-bisphosphonate conjugates, potential bone-seeking estrogen pro-drugs, on 17beta-estradiol serum kinetics and bone mass in rats.

In order to target 17beta-estradiol directly at bone we synthesized three 17beta-estradiol-bisphosphonate conjugates (E2-BPs) with different esterase-sensitive linkers between both molecular moieties. The systemic administration of these compounds should result primarily in local estrogenic effects on bone with no or negligible systemic hormonal effects. Only if a considerable margin exists between the doses required for inhibition of bone loss and those for systemic hormonal effects can such a pro-drug be considered acceptable for patients refusing systemic estrogen replacement therapy for se

Vitamin D Status and Longitudinal Changes in Body Composition in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in body weight and composition are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are independent predictors for morbidity and mortality. Low vitamin D status is also more prevalent in patients with COPD compared to controls and has been related to lower lung function, muscle atrophy and impaired musculoskeletal function. This study aimed to evaluate the association between vitamin D levels and status with body composition (BC), as well as with its changes over time. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with COPD and controls without COPD, participa

Serum Uric Acid Level Is Positively Associated With Higher Bone Mineral Density at Multiple Skeletal Sites Among Healthy Qataris.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress has been implicated as a fundamental mechanism in the decline of bone mass. Although serum uric acid (SUA) has potent antioxidant properties, the findings of many epidemiological and experimental studies couldn't draw a clear conclusion on the relation between SUA and bone health. We aim to investigate the association between SUA and bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites among healthy Qataris. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional analysis including total-body and site-specific bone mineral density scores and other serological markers of 2981 healthy Qat

Effect and potential risks of using multilevel cement-augmented pedicle screw fixation in osteoporotic spine with lumbar degenerative disease.

BACKGROUND: The increase of augmented level and bone cement dose are accompanied by the rising incidence of cement leakage (CL) of cement-augmented pedicle screw instrumentation (CAPSI). But the effect and potential risks of the application of CAPSI to osteoporotic lumbar degenerative disease (LDD) have not been studied in the case of multilevel fixation. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and potential complications of using multilevel CAPSI for patients with osteoporotic LDD. METHODS: A total of 93 patients with multilevel LDD were divided into the CAPSI group (46 subjects) a

Consequences of Hyperthyroidism and Its Treatment for Bone Microarchitecture Assessed by High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography.

Background: Hyperthyroidism is associated with bone mass reduction and increased fracture risk, but the effects on other important bone parameters have been sparsely examined. Therefore, we investigated bone microarchitecture and estimated bone strength by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in hyperthyroid patients at diagnosis and after being euthyroid for at least one year. Methods: Two approaches were used: (A) a case-control study comparing 61 hyperthyroid women with 61 euthyroid women matched for age and menopause status; (B) a follow-up study, in which

Real World Experience of Denosumab Treatment in the Belfast Osteoporosis Service.

Osteoporosis is a significant global health and economic burden associated with bone fracture, morbidity and mortality. Denosumab, a novel human monoclonal antibody second-line treatment, inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and increases bone mineral density (BMD). Treatment achieves reductions in vertebral, non-vertebral and hip fracture risk. We undertook a service evaluation to review clinical outcomes of patients treated with denosumab in an osteoporosis department that provides regional services. We identified 529 patients (95% female; mean age 72.8 years; 35-98 years), who had a

Association of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1, Bone Mass and Inflammation to Low-energy Distal Radius Fractures and Fracture Healing in Elderly Women Attending Emergency Care.

OBJECTIVE: Elderly patients suffer fractures through low-energy mechanisms. The distal radius is the most frequent fracture localization. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1) plays an important role in the maintenance of bone mass and its levels decline with advancing age and in states of malnutrition. Our aim was to investigate the association of IGF1 levels, bone mass, nutritional status, and inflammation to low-energy distal radius fractures and also study if fracture healing is influenced by IGF1, nutritional status, and inflammation. METHODS: Postmenopausal women, 55 years or older, with
