Characterizing sexual violence perpetrated by adolescents in South Africa and associations with HIV and STI risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Data on sexual violence perpetration among adolescents has not been widely available in South Africa. This paper characterizes sexual violence perpetration and identifies factors associated with perpetration. METHOD: Data were derived from a secondary analysis of N=879, 14-16 year old adolescents with elevated risk for depression, and recruited via house-to-house community sampling for participation in a randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of a behavioral intervention for prevention of HIV, STIs, and depression. Data were collected from 2018-2023 in South Africa. RESU

Factors associated with perinatal anxiety in adolescents: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents experience high rates of perinatal anxiety disorders. Understanding the factors that contribute to perinatal anxiety among adolescents is important to develop targeted approaches to prevention, identification, and treatment. We aimed to identify key factors associated with perinatal anxiety and related disorders in adolescents in the existing literature. METHODS: In this scoping review, we systematically searched four databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO) from their inception to December 2023. Included studies examined variables associated with perinatal anxiet

Attachment, Emotional Regulation, and Perceived Academic Efficacy in Adolescence: A Basis for Psychoeducational Intervention.

Objective: This study examined the relationships between secure attachment to parents and peers, emotional regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and perceived academic self-efficacy in adolescence. The research also aimed to identify how secure attachment is related to these variables to inform psychosocial interventions in educational and family contexts. Method: A total of 703 adolescents (351 boys, 352 girls; aged 15-18) completed validated questionnaires assessing attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers, emotional regulation, and perceived academic sel

The effect of prenatal maternal stress on adolescent internalizing symptoms and the genetic moderation of executive functioning and prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal maternal stress is a known risk factor for later emotional problems, yet not all exposed offspring develop psychopathology. Executive functioning and prefrontal cortex structure and activity may buffer these effects, but it remains unclear whether genetic predispositions in these domains moderate associations with adolescent internalizing symptoms. METHODS: We examined 3,111 adolescents (1,881 females, 1,230 males). Prenatal stress was measured via a cumulative index across four domains. Internalizing symptoms were self-reported at ages 14 and 16. Genetic predisposition f

Self-Control Buffers the Association Between Aggression and Problematic Internet Gaming in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Problematic internet gaming is an increasing mental health concern in adolescence; however, not all individuals exposed to known risk factors develop maladaptive gaming behaviors. Although aggression and self-control have each been linked to gaming-related problems, their interactive effects remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: This study examined whether self-control moderates the association between aggression and problematic internet gaming among adolescents. Baseline data from 1,914 first-grade middle school students participating in the internet gaming disorder cohort st

Using the Framework for Reporting Adaptation and Modifications-Expanded (FRAME) to Adapt an Evidence-Based HIV-Prevention Intervention for Zambian Adolescent Girls and Young Women.

Despite substantial global efforts, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Southern Africa remain disproportionately affected by HIV. In Zambia, the HIV prevalence among AGYW is nearly three times that of their male peers. The Informed Motivated Aware and Responsible Adolescents and Adults (IMARA) program, an evidence-based HIV/STI prevention intervention initially developed in the United States and later adapted in South Africa, demonstrated promising reduction in HIV risk through culturally tailored, mother-daughter-focused strategies. This paper outlines the process of adapting IMARA fo

From Misunderstanding to Marginalization: The Role of Knowledge in HIV-Related Discrimination and Risk Behavior Among Adolescents in Germany.

Adolescents frequently demonstrate limited knowledge about HIV/AIDS, contributing to persistent stigma, misconceptions, and risky behaviors. These knowledge gaps and stigmatizing attitudes hinder effective HIV prevention and health outcomes. Understanding the sources of adolescents' HIV knowledge and identifying demographic disparities can inform targeted educational interventions. We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous survey with 2110 adolescents aged 14-18 in Munich, Germany, prior to an extracurricular sexual health lecture between November 2023 and February 2024. The questionnaire asse

Subcortical functional connectivity alterations in first-episode medication-naïve adolescents with major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) demonstrates significant alterations in intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) of the subcortical networks (SCN). However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these changes in adolescents with MDD and their association with stressors and sleep disturbances remain poorly understood. Using seed-based functional connectivity analysis, we investigated changes in intrinsic connectivity of the SCN in 83 first-episode medication-naïve adolescents with MDD (aMDD) and 59 healthy controls (HC). We then examined the correlation between the SCN connectivity alteration

Feasibility Trial of a Single Session of Crisis Response Planning for Youth at High Risk for Suicide.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents, yet access to mental health care remains limited. Youth have unique developmental and contextual considerations as they are avid users of digital technologies, which may influence how they engage with mental health interventions. Crisis Response Planning (CRP), a single-session intervention, has shown promise in adults but has not been systematically evaluated in youth. This study tested the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a chat-based version of CRP for adolescents with suicidal ideation (SI). Fifty-o

Stress, loneliness, depression, anxiety and problematic smartphone use among a sample of Syrian refugee adolescents: a network approach.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated the existence of complex associations between stress, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and smartphone addiction in adolescents. However, the paucity of studies evaluating the relevant relationships in migrant adolescents demands the elimination of uncertainty in a sample of adolescents exposed to trauma and chronic stressors. METHOD: This study utilizes network analysis to identify the central factors and potential bridging paths among these variables. Identifying central symptom clusters contributing to the maintenance of the overall network pro

The Impact of Telenursing on the Self-management of Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Adolescent Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is one of the cancer treatments among adolescents, after which nursing care at home is required due to developing side effects such as constipation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. One solution to deliver nursing care is to provide remote self-management training. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of telenursing on the self-management of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms among adolescents undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: In this intervention study, 66 adolescents 12 to 18 years of age who were referred to teaching hospitals for receiving che

Clinical recommendations for the inpatient management of lower respiratory tract infections in children and adolescents with severe neurological impairment in Germany.

Children and adolescents with severe neurological impairment (SNI) require specialized care due to their complex medical needs. In particular, these patients are often affected by severe and recurrent lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs). These infections, including viral and bacterial etiology, pose a significant risk to these patients, often resulting in respiratory insufficiency and long-term impairments. Using expert consensus, we developed clinical recommendations on the management of LRTIs in children and adolescents with SNI. These recommendations emphasize comprehensive multidisc

Evaluating the Determinants of Substance Use in LGBTQIA+ Adolescents: A Scoping Review.

Background: Research has consistently shown increased drug use among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals. This is particularly the case among LGBTQIA+ adolescents. Substance use within this vulnerable community can propagate mental health issues, leading to psychiatric disorders, self-harm, and even suicide. Therefore, the objective of this scoping review was to evaluate the determinants of drug use among LGBTQIA+ adolescents. Methods: A comprehensive search of mainly primary research was conducted, using several databases. Peer-

Identifying promising themes and messages for youth vaping prevention: A national study.

Use of e-cigarettes and vapes among adolescents continues to be a major public health concern. Health communication efforts can discourage e-cigarette use among adolescents by influencing beliefs and behavior. However, to do so, studies need to identify the most promising themes and messages based on the latest evidence about the harms of e-cigarettes and vaping. Participants were a nationally representative sample of 1,603 US adolescents aged 13-17 years, recruited in the summer of 2022. Adolescents were randomly assigned to view 7 vaping prevention statements (one from each theme: nicotine a

Social influence and advocacy pathways during a web-based program for adolescent smoking prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to smokers has been identified as a predictor of adolescent tobacco use. Conversely, adolescents who tend to be advocates against smoking may become less likely to initiate smoking themselves. Several digital tobacco prevention programs have been developed to include social strategies. This study aimed to identify (1) whether programs can motivate adolescents to become advocates against smoking, and (2) if being an advocate against smoking and exposure to friends who smoke can predict smoking while controlling for a program's effect. METHODS: We conducted a non-prespeci
