Intermolecular proton transfer in anionic complexes of uracil with alcohols.

A series of 18 alcohols (ROH) has been designed with an enthalpy of deprotonation in the gas phase (H(DP)) in the range 13.8-16.3 eV. The effects of excess electron attachment to the binary alcohol-uracil (ROH...U) complexes have been studied at the density functional level with a B3LYP exchange-correlation functional and at the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory level. The photoelectron spectra of anionic complexes of uracil with 3 alcohols (ethanol, 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanol, and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol) have been measured with 2.54 eV photons. For ROHs with deprot

Brief intervention for prenatal alcohol use: a randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of a brief intervention in the reduction of prenatal alcohol consumption by women when a partner is included. METHODS: Randomized trial of a single session brief intervention given by the study nurse or principal investigator for 304 pregnant women and their partners. The women had positive T-ACE (Tolerance, Annoyed, Cut down, Eye-opener, an alcohol screening test) results and were at risk for alcohol consumption while pregnant. All completed initial diagnostic and postpartum interviews. RESULTS: Fewer than 20% of participants (median 11.5 weeks of gestat

Alcohol impairs astrogliogenesis by stem cells in rodent neurospheres.

Neurosphere cultures derived from fetal brain regions can proliferate in response to exogenous growth factors such as basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and give rise to undifferentiated precursor cells that form a floating neurosphere. In this study, neurospheres generated from the ganglionic eminence region of embryonic day 15 (E15) rat embryos were treated in the presence or absence of ethanol. We found that such neurospheres respond to environmental toxins such as alcohol and still retain the multi-potential capability of differentiation into neuronal and glial cell types. Ethanol at hi

Guidelines for identifying and referring persons with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) results from maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and carries lifelong consequences. Early recognition of FAS can result in better outcomes for persons who receive a diagnosis. Although FAS was first identified in 1973, persons with this condition often do not receive a diagnosis. In 2002, Congress directed CDC to update and refine diagnostic and referral criteria for FAS, incorporating recent scientific and clinical evidence. In 2002, CDC convened a scientific working group (SWG) of persons with expertise in FAS research, diagnosis, and treatment to draft criteri

Neurotoxic effects of alcohol and acetaldehyde during embryonic development.

Alcohol drinking during pregnancy results in abnormal fetal development, including fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in humans and experimental animals. FAS is characterized by two major effects, including central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction and multiple anomalies recognizable mainly as a typical face. However, the mechanisms of alcohol-induced embryotoxicity have not been clearly demonstrated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible mechanisms underlying ethanol-induced FAS in the developing embryo. First, ethanol-induced developmental abnormalities were investigated in v

Dissociative disorders among inpatients with drug or alcohol dependency.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of dissociative disorders among inpatients with alcohol or drug dependency. METHOD: The Dissociative Experiences Scale was used to screen 215 consecutive inpatients admitted to the dependency treatment center of a large mental hospital over a 1-year period (March 1, 2003, to March 31, 2004). Patients who had scores of 30.0 or above were compared with patients who scored below 10.0 on the scale. The patients in both groups were then evaluated using the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Dissociative

Review article: current management of alcoholic liver disease.

Alcoholic liver disease, including acute alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic cirrhosis, is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western world. Abstinence remains the cornerstone of management of all forms of alcoholic liver disease. Recent research, which has elucidated the mechanisms of alcohol-induced liver injury, offers the prospect of advances in the management of alcoholic liver disease. We review the most recent data on the efficacy of treatment of acute alcoholic injury, including nutritional support, corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants, and agents that

[Non alcoholic steatohepatitis: an emergent and potentially serious pathology].

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is an acquired liver disease, usually metabolic characterised by histologic lesions with steatosis, intralobular necrosis and inflammatory infiltrates. Liver biopsy findings are identical to those seen in alcoholic hepatitis. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is increasingly reported in industrial countries because of an increase of the prevalence of obesity and diabetes which are the most common risk factors of this disease. The diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is based on a confrontation between clinical and anatomic data and an exclusion of an excessive inta

Effect of Opuntia ficus indica on symptoms of the alcohol hangover.

BACKGROUND: The severity of the alcohol hangover may be related to inflammation induced by impurities in the alcohol beverage and byproducts of alcohol metabolism. An extract of the Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) plant diminishes the inflammatory response to stressful stimuli. METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, 64 healthy, young adult volunteers were randomly assigned to receive OFI (1600 IU) and identical placebo, given 5 hours before alcohol consumption. During 4 hours, subjects consumed up to 1.75 g of alcohol per kilogram of body weight. Hangover severity (9 s

Current recommendations for treatment of severe toxic alcohol poisonings.

BACKGROUND: Ethylene glycol (EG) and methanol are responsible for accidental, suicidal, and epidemic poisonings, resulting in death or permanent sequelae. Toxicity is due to the metabolic products of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase. Conventional management of these intoxications consists of ethanol and hemodialysis. Fomepizole, a potent ADH inhibitor, has largely replaced antidotal ethanol use in France and two recent prospective U.S. trials definitively established its efficacy. Fomepizole appears safer than ethanol and while no comparative study of efficacy exists, fom

Brief alcohol interventions with mandated or adjudicated college students.

This article summarizes the proceedings of a symposium presented at the 2003 RSA Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, organized and chaired by Nancy Barnett. The purpose of the symposium was to present information and efficacy data about approaches to brief intervention with students who get into trouble on their campuses for alcohol and as a result are required to attend alcohol education or counseling. Presentations were (1) Differences Between Mandated College Students and Their Peers on Alcohol Use and Readiness to Change, by Tracy O'Leary Tevyaw; (2) An Effective Alcohol Prevention Program

Fetal alcohol syndrome in the United States corrections system.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can result in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which may increase the risk of confinement in the corrections system. In the United States each state and four major cities' corrections systems were asked to complete a questionnaire on the prevalence of FAS and alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) in the offender population, the availability of screening and diagnostic services to identify offenders with FAS and staff training needs related to FAS. The total population in the 54 entities was 3,080,904 inmates. Completed questionnaires were obtained from 42 en

Balance and gait deficits in schizophrenia compounded by the comorbidity of alcoholism.

OBJECTIVE: Alcoholism carries a liability of balance and gait instability that persists with sobriety. Such deficits are less well documented in schizophrenia and may be compounded by comorbidity with alcoholism, which is prevalent in schizophrenia. METHOD: The authors administered quantitative ataxia tests to 10 patients comorbid for schizophrenia and alcohol dependence/abuse, 10 nonalcoholic patients with schizophrenia, 24 nonschizophrenic patients with alcohol dependence, and 27 age-matched comparison men. RESULTS: All three patient groups were impaired relative to the comparison subjects
