Epigenetic effects of alcohol consumption on type 2 diabetes.

East Asians can be more susceptible to heavy alcohol consumption than others, due to genetic variations. In addition, alcohol drinking has been suspected as a cause of type 2 diabetes (T2D). To clarify the integrated toxic mechanisms of alcohol on T2D in East Asians, we performed epigenome-wide association studies using methylation profiling arrays among four groups of South Korean men (N = 80): drinking (DK), diabetic (DM), both drinking and diabetic (DK + DM), and non-drinking and non-diabetic controls (Con). We screened hypermethylated or hypomethylated sites in both DK and DM, compared to

Associations of psychological needs with alcohol use and related outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Self-determination theory provides a useful framework for understanding engagement and change in health behaviors and has informed efficacious health intervention, but applications to alcohol use are limited. In the present research, we test hypotheses that greater satisfaction of the psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) is associated with protective factors for alcohol use, whereas greater need frustration is associated with risk factors. METHOD: In Studies 1 and 2, convenience samples of college students across the United States completed a cross-sectional

Treatment and Referral for Alcohol Use Disorders in Primary Care.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2026;28(1):25f0405

The Brain Age Gap as a Predictor of Alcohol Initiation in Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests regional and network-level brain imaging features in late childhood are predictive of alcohol use in adolescence. However, the directionality of these effects (i.e. whether they reflect accelerated or delayed neuromaturation) are mixed. We applied a Brain Age Gap Estimation (BrainAGE) model to examine whether overall deviations from typical brain aging trajectories are predictive of (1) alcohol initiation and (2) use behaviour (experimentation versus binge drinking) in adolescence. METHODS: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study releas

Psychosocial latent profiles of adolescent alcohol use in Ecuador.

PURPOSE: Adolescent alcohol use is a major public health concern with long-term family, social, and academic consequences. This study aimed to identify psychosocial latent profiles of alcohol use in Ecuadorian adolescents and to examine the factors associated with transitions from low- to high-risk drinking. METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 1266 students aged 12-18 years from three schools in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, completed the AUDIT, APNE, PRQ, and CLASS. Fuzzy C-Means clustering was applied to z-standardized psychosocial indicators to identify profile solutions, and a CART decision-tree

Beyond Gallstones and Alcohol: Unveiling Hypertriglyceridemia as the Cause of Pancreatitis.

Hypertriglyceridemia is a less frequent yet clinically significant cause of acute pancreatitis, accounting for approximately 4-10% of cases, and is often overlooked when routine laboratory analysis is hindered by lipemia-related analytical interference. We describe two cases of severe hypertriglyceridemia-induced pancreatitis presenting with acute abdominal pain and markedly elevated triglyceride levels. The first case involved polygenic hypertriglyceridemia triggered by undiagnosed diabetes. The second case represented secondary, alcohol-related hypertriglyceridemia. In both cases, lipemia-re

Alcohol Control Policy in Southeast Asia: A Descriptive Review.

Southeast Asia plays a vital role in the global alcohol trade, with rapid economic growth and increasing intra-regional travel contributing to shifts in alcohol consumption. This descriptive review of publicly available data sources aims to assess the extent to which alcohol control policies in Southeast Asia align with the World Health Organization (WHO)'s SAFER framework. Data on alcohol consumption, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, religious demographics, and life expectancy were obtained from recent publicly available sources, including the World Bank Group and the WHO. Policy data

Next-generation brewing yeasts for non-alcoholic beers.

Non‑alcoholic beers (NABs) are a rapidly expanding market. However, producing high‑quality products remains challenging because ethanol strongly shapes beer flavor and mouthfeel. Biological production methods, which restrict alcohol formation during fermentation, offer advantages over physical methods, which remove alcohol after fermentation. However, they are limited by the performance and diversity of available yeasts. Recent advances in bioprospecting, breeding, hybridization, adaptive evolution, and genetic engineering reveal how different yeast lineages and trait-development strategies ca

Spectroscopic Decoding of Ethanol-Water Clusters in Alcoholic Beverages.

Recent advances in spectroscopic techniques have provided molecular insights into the supramolecular structures of ethanol-water clusters (EWC) in alcoholic beverages. Sensory quality of these beverages is not only governed by trace flavor compounds but is fundamentally influenced by the dynamic, hydrogen-bonded networks formed between ethanol and water molecules. This review summarizes progress in elucidating the structural characteristics, stability, and transformation mechanisms of EWC across different alcoholic matrices, with a particular emphasis on contributions from multiscale spectrosc

Application of unconventional microorganisms for the production of non-alcoholic beer.

Non-alcoholic beer (NAB) is one of the rapidly expanding segments of the beer market, yet many products still suffer from wort-like sweetness, thin body, and muted hop-yeast complexity. These quality gaps arise because conventional approaches, such as limited fermentation with Saccharomyces or physical dealcoholization of regular beer, are fundamentally constrained by the central role of maltose and maltotriose fermentation in standard brewing. Unconventional microorganisms offer an alternative biological route to the production of NAB. Non-Saccharomyces and maltose-negative yeasts, lactic aci

Attraction to secreted isoamyl alcohol as a signal for beneficial commensals.

C. elegans, a bacterivore living in microbially-complex environments, harbors a characteristic community of gut bacteria that contribute to its health and fitness. What determines which environmental bacteria end up as commensals is largely unknown in C. elegans , as in other animals. Previous work found that gut Pantoea isolates supported rapid worm development and infection resistance, while environmental congenerics were inferior. Notably, worms were preferentially attracted to the more beneficial gut isolates. Using bioactivity-guided fractionation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Alcohol-driven AMPA receptor dysregulation across the lifespan.

Alcohol use produces persistent alterations in glutamatergic signaling that evolve across the lifespan, with α-amino-3‑hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors (AMPARs) emerging as major contributors to these neuroadaptations. Alcohol disrupts glutamate homeostasis and modifies AMPAR subunit composition as well as receptor trafficking, producing circuit-specific changes in synaptic plasticity within reward pathways. These AMPAR‑related adaptations increase excitatory drive strengthening behaviors that promote escalated alcohol use. Adolescence represents a particularly vulnerable p

Microbial Biomarkers for the Prevention and Diagnosis of Alcoholic Liver Disease.

Alterations in gut microbiota are closely associated with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) progression. We aimed to identify ALD-related bacterial strains with therapeutic or diagnostic potential. Human fecal samples were analyzed to screen candidate microbes, and an ALD mouse model was used to evaluate their effects. We also assessed bacterial DNA levels in blood to explore diagnostic utility. Lactobacillus helveticus and L. lactis treatment improved gut dysbiosis and reduced hepatic inflammation and endotoxemia. In contrast, Veillonella dispar, which is significantly enriched in ALD pa

MetALD at the crossroads of metabolic and alcohol-related liver disease.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are leading causes of global liver morbidity. Addressing the complex interplay of metabolic and alcohol-related factors has led to the 'MetALD' (metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-associated liver disease) concept, categorizing individuals with metabolic dysfunction who consume alcohol beyond MASLD thresholds but below ALD criteria. MetALD is associated with increased mortality and severe liver outcomes, including accelerated progression to advanced fibrosis, cancer, and cardiovascular co

[Alcohol withdrawal : benzodiazepines, neither automatic nor systematic].

The CIWA-Ar (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol-revised) is the gold standard for assessing the severity of alcohol withdrawal. It allows the dosage of benzodiazepines to be adjusted according to symptom intensity rather than prescribing them at a fixed dose, with the aim of limiting prolonged use and the associated risk of dependence. Randomized trials have shown that this approach reduces both the total amount of benzodiazepines administered and the duration of treatment without compromising clinical efficacy or increasing alcohol withdrawal-related complications. However,

Impact of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on Cerebral Cortex Development.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) represent a significant global health concern and are the leading cause of preventable birth defects, intellectual disabilities, and persistent behavioral deficits. The neurodevelopmental mechanisms underlying FASD are not yet fully understood, but there is growing interest in the role of cortical development in the manifestation of these disorders. The cerebral cortex serves as the master regulator of higher-order functions, including sensory perception, motor planning, decision-making, and general intelligence-processes that are all adversely affected
