Experimental Electrophysiological and Pressure Responses of Urinary Bladder Detrusor to Lumbar to Sacral Nerve Rerouting - An Animal Study with Negative Results.

UNLABELLED: Background/Aims/Objectives: To verify the transfer of evoked potentials through anastomosis of an experimentally created micturition reflex arc and to detect said potentials directly on the detrusor and sphincter of rabbit urinary bladder. METHODS: During 2013-2015, 17 rabbits were operated upon and measurement followed during reoperation 3-16 months later. Suitable ventral spinal roots were electrophysiologically detected following laminectomy, and a somatic-central nervous system-autonomic micturition reflex arc was created. During reoperation, the ventral root was stimulated ab

Detection of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy using exercise testing in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: This study investigated autonomic nervous system function in subjects with diabetes during exercise and recovery. METHODS: Eighteen type 2 diabetics (age 55±2 years) and twenty healthy controls (age 51±1 years) underwent two 16-min bicycle submaximal ECG stress tests followed by 45 min of recovery. During session #2, atropine (0.04 mg/kg) was administered at peak exercise, and the final two minutes of exercise and entire recovery occurred under parasympathetic blockade. Plasma catecholamines were measured throughout. Parasympathetic effect was defined as the difference between a measure…

Heart rate increment in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea in an older population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of the heart rate power spectral density of the very low frequency component expressed as a percentage of … was lower in mild cases and in women. These findings suggest that the ageing-related changes in the autonomic nervous system reduce the applicability of HRV to diagnose OSA in older populations.

Low to high frequency ratio of heart rate variability spectra fails to describe sympatho-vagal balance in cardiac patients.

Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects an influence of autonomic nervous system on heart work. In healthy subjects, ratio between low and high frequency components (LF/HF ratio) of HRV spectra represents a measure of sympatho-vagal balance. The ratio was defined by the authorities as an useful clinical tool, but it seems that it fails to summarise sympatho-vagal balance in a clinical setting. Value of the method was re-evaluated in several categories of cardiac patients. HRV was analysed from 24-hour Holter ECGs in 132 healthy subjects, and 2159 cardiac patients dichotomised by gender, median o…

Beta2-agonist and anticholinergic drugs in the treatment of lung disease.

The lungs are innervated by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which entails the activation of adrenergic and muscarinic receptors, respectively. Both the adrenergic and muscarinic receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors, and they share many similar signal transduction molecules. These receptors are widely expressed in the lung and the specific receptor expression can vary among the species. The location and the subtype of receptor expressed are important in the regulation of normal airway function. Acetylcholine released from the parasympathetic fibers activates the M

Relation between motion sickness susceptibility and vasovagal syncope susceptibility.

Motion sickness is common in the population, especially in children, but its physiopathology is only partially understood and the true nature of the particular susceptibility of certain subjects remains completely unknown. Some symptoms of motion sickness, like pallor and cold sweating, are of an autonomic nature and the role of the autonomic nervous system in vasovagal syncope is well known. Our aim was therefore to study the relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and vasovagal syncope susceptibility. Questionnaires about susceptibility to motion sickness and to vasovagal syncope…

The intramural innervation of the rabbit upper urinary tract.

The role of the autonomic innervation of the upper urinary tract for pyeloureteral motility is not completely understood. It is still debatable if the autonomic nervous system might play a modulating role on the ureteral peristalsis. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution and regional variation of the intramural innervation using whole-mount preparations of the rabbit upper urinary tract. Whole-mount preparation was performed at upper urinary tracts of healthy rabbits. Immunohistochemistry was employed using Neurofilament (NF), Tyrosine Hydroxylase (TH), Choline Acetyltransf…

Direct prion neuroinvasion following inhalation into the nasal cavity.

Inhalation of prions into the nasal cavity is an efficient route of infection. Following inhalation of infectious prions, animals develop disease with a similar incubation period compared with per os exposure, but with greater efficiency. To identify the reason for this increased efficiency, we identified neural structures that uniquely innervate the nasal cavity and neural structures known to mediate neuroinvasion following oral infection and used immunohistochemistry to determine the temporal and spatial accumulation of prions from hamster tissue sections containing cell bodies and axons at

Longitudinal assessment of resting wakefulness heart rate variability and its association with sleep apnea severity.

This study investigates the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) during wakefulness and sleep apnea severity, with a focus on long-term autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation. Using longitudinal data from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS), we analyzed 15-minute pre-sleep ECG segments from 112 carefully selected participants, applying strict exclusion criteria to minimize confounding from comorbidities and medications known to affect HRV. A comprehensive set of time-domain, frequency-domain, and nonlinear HRV features was extracted and compared across apnea severity groups …

Allergy-associated acute coronary syndrome without anaphylaxis in a prospective observational study.

Kounis syndrome is an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) triggered by allergic reactions via mast cell activation, classically accompanied by anaphylaxis. However, ACS associated with mild or subclinical allergic reactions may be underrecognized. We investigated immune markers and autonomic nervous system activity in patients with ACS and characterized allergy-associated ACS without anaphylactic symptoms. Among 375 patients treated for ACS (April 2022 to March 2024), 49 were prospectively enrolled. Patients were classified into non-allergy-associated ACS (ACS-NA, n = 32) and allergy-associated ACS …

Narrative Review of Body-First Versus Brain-First Prodromal Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder in which nonmotor symptoms often precede classical motor manifestations by years. Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), depression, anxiety, apathy, and mild cognitive impairment are increasingly recognized as clinically meaningful prodromal features, yet they remain underrecognized in routine practice. This narrative review summarizes literature identified through PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar between 2003 and 2025 using terms related to PD, prodromal symptoms, neuropsychiatric symptoms, a

Clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of chronic intestinal and colonic pseudo-obstruction in neurological diseases.

Chronic intestinal and colonic pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) represent a severe and heterogeneous group of gastrointestinal motility disorders with symptoms of bowel obstruction in the absence of a mechanical cause. Neurological and neuromuscular diseases are among the most important etiological factors, caused by dysfunction of the enteric nervous system, extrinsic autonomic pathways and intestinal smooth muscle. However, intestinal dysmotility in these conditions remains frequently under-recognized leading to delayed diagnosis and substantial morbidity. In this review, we detailed the CIPO-relat

Heart rate variability in the clinical assessment of patients with chronic liver disease.

Autonomic dysfunction (AD) is frequently observed in cirrhotic patients and is associated with poor clinical outcomes and prognoses. Heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive tool for assessing autonomic nervous system balance, has been extensively studied in a variety of conditions, including chronic liver disease (CLD); however, no recent reviews have focused on its role in CLD. This article examines the mechanisms of AD in CLD and the foundation for HRV assessment, highlighting its diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic applications in CLD, including liver transplantation (LT). Changes i…

Successful Anesthetic Management for Laparoscopic Gynecological Surgery in Adult-Onset Alexander's Disease: A Case Report.

Alexander's disease is a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that presents significant challenges for anesthetic management due to its effects on the central nervous system. The disease stems from mutations in the glial fibrillary acidic protein (i.e., GFAP) gene, leading to impaired myelination and neurological complications such as bulbar dysfunction, spasticity, and autonomic instability. This case report presents the anesthetic management of a 34-year-old female patient diagnosed with Alexander's disease type II (i.e., adult-onset), cerebellar ataxia, and dysarthria. She underw
