The cognitive reserve hypothesis explains the disparity between clinical and pathological phenotypes and why, in two individuals with the same extent of neuropathology, one may be demented while the other remains cognitively intact. We examined the balance between brain magnetic resonance imaging measures of the two most common pathologies associated with brain ageing, cerebrovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease, and parameters of cerebral reserve in well-characterized participants born in 1936, for whom childhood intelligence is known. Brain magnetic resonance imaging was carried out at 1

Compulsivity is a core feature of addictive disorders, including gambling disorder. However, it is unclear to what extent this compulsive behavior in gambling disorder is associated with abnormal compulsivity-related neurocognitive functioning. Here, we summarize and synthesize the evidence for compulsive behavior, as assessed by compulsivity-related neurocognitive tasks, in individuals with gambling disorder compared to healthy controls (HCs). A total of 29 studies, comprising 41 task-results, were included in the systematic review; 32 datasets (n=1072 individuals with gambling disorder; n=13

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the characteristics and psychological mechanism of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with mood disorders. We examined how self-compassion and emotional regulation affected NSSI and tested the mediating role of self-compassion in the link between emotional regulation and NSSI.
METHOD: We recruited outpatient and inpatient adolescent patients with bipolar and related disorders or depressive disorders (DSM-5), with a focus on NSSI. We also recruited healthy controls from the community. We collected demographic and clinical data. The Adolescent Self

Psychedelic drugs, historically recognized for their effects on perception, cognition, and emotion, are entering their renaissance, as a growing body of both preclinical and clinical evidence supports their potential for the treatment - mostly as an adjunct to psychotherapy, i.e., psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) - of various psychiatric disorders. The recent approval of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for generalized anxiety disorder, as well as that of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) for posttraumatic stress disorder and psilocybin for depression, suggests a new era in psyc

Prenatal exposure to alcohol (PAE) does not necessarily lead to dysmorphic changes, and individuals can develop secondary challenges affecting both behavior and cognition as late as midlife. Although fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) pose a risk to the eye, little is known if PAE, similar to FASD without dysmorphology, can also lead to non-physical manifestations in the visual system in middle-aged individuals. We investigated PAE in a cohort of 22 vervet monkeys and 27 controls and assessed retinal function and oximetry at several ages across midlife. Our study with electroretinography

The cerebellum, a phylogenetically ancient brain region, has long been considered strictly a motor control structure. Recent studies have implicated the cerebellum in cognition, sensation, emotion and autonomic function, making it an important target for further investigation. Here, we show that cerebellar Purkinje neurons in mice are activated by the hormone asprosin, leading to enhanced thirst, and that optogenetic or chemogenetic activation of Purkinje neurons induces rapid manifestation of water drinking. Purkinje neuron-specific asprosin receptor (Ptprd) deletion results in reduced water

The Hurst exponent (H) isolated in fractal analyses of neuroimaging time series is implicated broadly in cognition. Within this literature, H is associated with multiple mental disorders, suggesting that H is transdimensionally associated with psychopathology. Here, we unify these results and demonstrate a pattern of decreased H with increased general psychopathology and attention-deficit/hyperactivity factor scores during a working memory task in 1,839 children. This pattern predicts current and future cognitive performance in children and some psychopathology in 703 adults. This pattern also

Determining the association between genetic variation and phenotype is a key step to study the mechanism of Alzheimer's disease (AD), laying the foundation for studying drug therapies and biomarkers. AD is the most common type of dementia in the aged population. At present, three early-onset AD genes (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2) and one late-onset AD susceptibility gene apolipoprotein E (APOE) have been determined. However, the pathogenesis of AD remains unknown. Imaging genetics, an emerging interdisciplinary field, is able to reveal the complex mechanisms from the genetic level to human cognition and

Carotenoids are versatile isoprenoids of great importance in food science and nutrition. These compounds are natural colorants and key to combat vitamin A deficiency, a major global nutritional problem. In addition, carotenoids have health-promoting biological actions that can contribute to reduce the risk of serious diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, skin, bone and eye conditions and metabolic disorders. Beneficial roles of carotenoids in cognition and fetal development are also attracting increased attention. The presence of double bonds cause carotenoids to be prone to geom

Emotional processing deficits (EPDs) are commonly observed among individuals diagnosed with (1) psychotic disorders (2) and depression. Given that EPDs can impact overall functioning and quality of life, the need to identify effective interventions is critical. To date, our current understanding of treatments for these impairments is limited. However, there is increasing interest in investigating the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). This neuromodulation technique releases a weak electrical current through the brain. Given research suggesting promise for using tDCS to

This review contrasts the neuromodulatory influences of acetylcholine (ACh) on the relatively conserved primary visual cortex (V1), compared to the newly evolved dorsolateral prefrontal association cortex (dlPFC). ACh is critical both for proper circuit development and organization, and for optimal functioning of mature systems in both cortical regions. ACh acts through both nicotinic and muscarinic receptors, which show very different expression profiles in V1 vs. dlPFC, and differing effects on neuronal firing. Cholinergic effects mediate attentional influences in V1, enhancing representatio

Addictions are highly heritable disorders, with heritability estimates ranging from 39% to 72%. Multiple studies suggest a link between paternal drug abuse and addiction in their children. However, patterns of inheritance cannot be explained purely by Mendelian genetic mechanisms. Exposure to drugs of abuse results in epigenetic changes that may be passed on through the germline. This mechanism of epigenetic transgenerational inheritance may provide a link between paternal drug exposure and addiction susceptibility in the offspring. Recent studies have begun to investigate the effect of patern

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The scientific study of the visual consciousness has been marked by significant recent achievements, resulting from an interaction between the exploration of cognition in both brain-damaged patients and healthy individuals. Several neuropsychological syndromes contain marked dissociations which permit the identification of principles related to the neurophysiology of consciousness. The generality of these principles can then be evaluated in healthy individuals using a combination of experimental psychology paradigms, and functional brain-imaging tools.
RECENT FINDINGS: In t

Researchers are beginning to uncover the neurogenetic pathways that underlie our unparalleled capacity for spoken language. Initial clues come from identification of genetic risk factors implicated in developmental language disorders. The underlying genetic architecture is complex, involving a range of molecular mechanisms. For example, rare protein-coding mutations of the FOXP2 transcription factor cause severe problems with sequencing of speech sounds, while common genetic risk variants of small effect size in genes like CNTNAP2, ATP2C2 and CMIP are associated with typical forms of language

We report on a cross-syndrome comparison of hand, foot, eye and ear laterality in three groups of individuals with different genetic disorders (trisomy 21, del7q11.23, and del22q11.2) to test the relationship between atypical laterality and intellectual disability. These groups were compared to a group of typically developing persons. Hand, foot, eye and ear laterality was assessed using item tasks, conducted twice, and Bishop's card-reaching test. Ordering of the mean IQ score for each of the three groups was as follows: trisomy 21 < del7q11.23 < del22q11.2. We observed the same ordering as f

BACKGROUND: Parent and teacher data, from questionnaire surveys, suggest that school-identified disruptive children often have pragmatic language deficits of an autistic type.
AIMS: This replication study aimed to confirm earlier findings, using individual clinical assessment to investigate traits of autism-spectrum disorder in disruptive children.
METHOD: Persistently disruptive children (n = 26) and a comparison group (n = 22) were recruited from primary schools in a deprived inner-city area. Measures included standardised autism diagnostic interviews (with parents) and tests of IQ, social

Lewy bodies (LB) in the central nervous system are associated with several different clinical syndromes including Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Long term follow up of PD patients finds up to 78% eventually develop dementia, most of these patients exhibiting fluctuating cognition and visual hallucinations similar to DLB and with extensive cortical LB at autopsy. alpha-Synuclein positive, neuritic pathology, in the putamen of DLB and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), may contribute to postural-instability gait difficulty, parkinsonism, diminished levodopa respon

A review of the literature on the developmental outcome of medically and surgically treated symptomatic infantile spasms (IS) indicates that poor seizure control, severe mental retardation, and marked behavioral disorders are found at long-term outcome of symptomatic IS. The 2-year outcome findings of the UCLA Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Research Group in children with symptomatic infantile spasms and in children with early onset intractable symptomatic epilepsy other than IS (non-IS) demonstrate impaired development of cognition, language, and social communication despite improved seizure cont
