BACKGROUND: The first tissues to be deprived of perfusion and oxygenation in a hypovolemic situation and the last ones to be reperfused are the subcutaneous tissue and the gastrointestinal mucosa. We hypothesized that measurements of subcutaneous tissue gases and pH might reflect simultaneous changes in oxygenation of the intestinal mucosa. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this report is to describe diagnostic and therapeutic management of colonoscopic perforation and identify risk factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The charts of 6 patients who underwent surgery for colonoscopic perforation between January 2003 and December 2008 were reviewed. Study data included patient age, indication for colonoscopy, operative findings, repair technique, and outcome.

BACKGROUND: Early studies comparing laparoscopic and open operations for diverticulitis failed to show any advantages of the laparoscopic approach. Our study compared the 30-day postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic and open sigmoid colectomy for diverticulitis by surgeons who had performed 20 or more laparoscopic colectomies before the study period.

Ten patients with a urethra that could not be catheterized and with absent appendixes underwent neobladder construction using an ileal segment fashioned to serve as the anti-incontinence mechanism.
