The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of premedication on anxiety, cortisol, residual gastric volume and gastric pH. Following the approval of the institutional Clinical Research Ethics Committee, 100 patients in ASA I-II scheduled for elective gynecologic surgery, were included into a double blind study. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A large number of patients with epilepsy in the pediatric population have medically intractable epilepsy. In this age group seizures are usually daily or weekly, and response to antiepileptic therapy is poor, especially for those with neurological abnormalities and symptomatic epilepsies. However, several authors have already demonstrated similarly favorable long-term post-surgical seizure control when comparing pediatric and adult populations. In this article we aim to report the experience of the Ribeirão Preto Epilepsy Surgery Program in pediatric epilepsy surgery.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the world's commonest hereditary disorders. Painful episodes are the overriding manifestation. SCD pain is largely opioid-sensitive and, in severe cases, adult patients warranting hospitalization often need parenteral opioids. Pain is essentially subjective and is often best controlled by patients themselves. This study looks at SCD patients' perceptions of self-administering parenteral opioids. Using a mainly multiple-choice questionnaire and a focus group interview, data were gathered from 40 adult SCD patients during hospitalization over a 4-month period.
