The prosthetic rehabilitation of a panfacial fracture patient after reduction: a clinical report.

Panfacial fractures involve trauma to the lower, middle, and upper facial bones and often require a team approach for management. Early and complete restoration of preinjury facial contours and function should be the goal of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. When the intraoral landmarks are lost, overall facial anatomic landmarks can be used to restore the oral cavity. A patient with complex clinical panfacial fractures, including a vertically and horizontally malpositioned native alveolar bone and severe facial asymmetry, is presented. A functional and esthetic rehabi

Injury to Anatomic Structures Due to Fixation Device in Management of Mandibular Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: ORIF is the gold standard for the management of mandibular fractures. The chances of postoperative complications are due to infection, damage of the inferior alveolar nerve canal, or tooth root during the fixation of the fracture fragments. Fixation hardware placed in the vicinity of the vital structures may encroach on the anatomic structures, leading to postoperative complications. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the injury to the anatomic structures in the proximity of the fracture line due to the fixation device. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was

All-terrain vehicle use related fracture rates, patterns, and associations from 2002 to 2015 in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Since their introduction to USA markets in the late 20th century, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have been a significant source of trauma. Many paediatric studies have demonstrated the disproportionate rate in which minors are affected by ATV-related trauma, but no studies have been performed on a large sample size spanning all age and geographic ranges. This study is the first to analyze ATV-related fracture rates, patterns, and associated risks across all ages nationwide. METHODS & STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for ATV-

The role of seating position in determining the injury pattern among unrestrained children involved in motor vehicle collisions presenting to a level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Seating position in motor vehicle collisions (MVC) plays a major role in determining the injury pattern in mainly … ale score, or age distribution. FS children were more likely to present with isolated head, neck or facial injuries (HNFI) (51.2% vs 25%, P=.01), whereas BS children were more likely to suffer long bone or pelvic fractures (LPF) (60.4% vs 36.6%, P=.025). CONCLUSION: Injury pattern can vary according to seating position among unrestrained children presenting at t …

Postpyloric enteral feeding costs for patients with severe head injury: blind placement, endoscopy, and PEG/J versus TPN.

This study describes the advantages and disadvantages of several forms of enteral nutrition for patients with severe head injury (Glasgow Coma Scale Score [GCS], <12). Included in the study are nasoenteric nutrition delivery using blind, endoscopic, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and PEG with jejeunostomy (PEG/J), and open jejeunostomy tube placement methods. These methods are compared with parenteral delivery of nutrition. The study constituted a retrospective analysis of the success rate of early enteral feedings by blind, endoscopic PEG and PEG/J and by open jejeunostomy placemen

Immune cell-mediated neuroprotection is independent of estrogen action through estrogen receptor-alpha.

It has been well documented that both estrogen and immune cells (CD4+ T cells) mediate neuroprotection in the mouse facial nerve axotomy model. Estrogen has been shown to play an important role in regulating the immune response. However, it is unclear whether immune cell-mediated neuroprotection is dependent on estrogen signaling. In this study, using FACS staining, we confirmed that the majority of CD4+ T cells express high levels of estrogen receptor-alpha (ERα), suggesting that CD4+ T cell-mediated neuroprotection may be modulated by estrogen signaling. We previously found that immunodefici

Prognostic clinical and radiological parameters for immediate facial nerve function following vestibular schwannoma surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The paper aims to define the parameters available before surgery which could predict immediate facial nerve function after excision of a vestibular schwannoma (VS). METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with VS operated consecutively by a single surgeon using an identical surgical technique have been evaluated retrospectively. Data were collected regarding patients' sex, age at onset of symptoms and at surgery, initial symptoms, neurological status at presentation, early post-operative neurological status and complications. The main radiological parameters included in the study were tumour

Post-traumatic external nasal pain syndrome (a trigeminal based pain disorder).

Little has been written about persistent external nasal pain after injury to the nose in the neurologic or headache literature. In clinical practice, this can be a disabling and treatment refractory condition. The external portion of the nose is highly innervated by branches of the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve including the nasociliary nerve, external nasal nerve, infratrochlear nerve, anterior ethmoidal nerve, and infraorbital nerve. As these nerves are located on the external portion of the nose just deep enough to the skin they can be easily traumatized with an

Earring lesions of the parotid tail.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Masses in the parotid tail can be a source of consternation to radiologists and clinicians; inaccurate localization may lead to significant iatrogenic complication. We sought to review the pertinent anatomic localizing features of the parotid tail, relevant facial nerve anatomy, and sources of clinical and radiologic confusion. To conclude, we review imaging features that are helpful in generating a diagnosis in this location. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the imaging and clinical features of 111 parotid tail masses in 103 patients (56 male, 45 female, two of un

Angular asymmetries of the human face.

PURPOSE: The determination of an acceptable occlusal plane is essential for the development of esthetic prosthodontic restorations. However, since most faces are not symmetric, a method was developed for measuring facial angular asymmetry, i.e., the divergence from the vertical or horizontal of the line joining the midpoint of the intercanthal line and the philtrum of the lip, the interpupillary line, the intermeatal line, the lip commissure line, and the intercuspid line. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standardized frontal images (mouth closed, smiling, and biting on a wooden spatula) of 100 subject

Dental Pulp Cell Sheets Enhance Facial Nerve Regeneration via Local Neurotrophic Factor Delivery.

An effective strategy for sustained neurotrophic factor (NTF) delivery to sites of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) would accelerate healing and enhance functional recovery, addressing the major clinical challenges associated with the current standard of care. In this study, scaffold-free cell sheets were generated using human dental pulp stem/progenitor cells, that endogenously express high levels of NTFs, for use as bioactive NTF delivery systems. Additionally, the effect of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) on NTF expression by dental pulp cell (DPC) sheets was evaluated. In vitro analysis con

Complications of Cochlear Implant Surgery in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Recent advances in cochlear implant surgery have benefitted patients globally, but the risk of complications in LMICs may be heightened due to social and structural factors. This systematic review characterises the types and rates of complications reported in LMICs, while identifying the key barriers and facilitators to safe surgery. DATA SOURCES: Three databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and Global Index Medicus) and grey literature were searched from January 1, 2015 to May 30, 2025. REVIEW METHOD

Risk Factors and Interventional Predictors for Postoperative Malunion and Nonunion in Adult Mandibular Fractures: A Scoping Review.

Mandibular fractures are one of the most commonly treated injuries in oral and maxillofacial surgery. While malocclusion has been well studied as a postoperative complication, malunion and nonunion remain comparatively unreported despite being significant complications associated with the healing of facial fractures. This scoping review aims to evaluate risk factors, predictors, surgical variables, and management strategies associated with postoperative malunion or nonunion in mandibular fractures. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for English-language studies pu

Complications of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis in Infants with Isolated Robin Sequence.

Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis (MDO) is now the preferred procedure to alleviate airway obstruction in infants with severe Robin Sequence (RS). However, there have been very few studies investigating complications related to MDO surgery performed on patients affected by isolated RS. In this study, age at distraction, weight at distraction, preoperative intubation, repeat MDO and complications associated with MDO were included as variables. Minor, moderate and major problems were evaluated and recorded as surgical site infections (SSI), injuries to the facial nerve, self-extinction hypertr

Mandible Fractures Associated With the Introduction of an E-Scooter-Sharing System.

With the introduction of an e-scooter-sharing system in Germany, standing electric scooters became popular modes of transportation in many urban areas. But the increase in popularity has resulted in an increase in traumatic injuries associated with e-scooter accidents. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the common fracture pattern of patients with mandible fractures as a result of an electric scooter accident. The authors performed a retrospective investigation of 52 patients who were admitted to the trauma unit of an oral and maxillofacial department from June until November 2

Current landscape in motoneuron regeneration and reconstruction for motor cranial nerve injuries.

The intricate anatomy and physiology of cranial nerves have inspired clinicians and scientists to study their roles in the nervous system. Damage to motor cranial nerves may result from a variety of organic or iatrogenic insults and causes devastating functional impairment and disfigurement. Surgical innovations directed towards restoring function to injured motor cranial nerves and their associated organs have evolved to include nerve repair, grafting, substitution, and muscle transposition. In parallel with this progress, research on tissue-engineered constructs, development of bioelectrical

Improving Postoperative Nasal Airway Patency in Le Fort-Based, Maxillofacial Trauma Patients Via a Modified Nasal Packing Technique.

INTRODUCTION: Combined mid-face and nasal apparatus trauma injuries pose a significant challenge to airway patency (AW), in the immediate postoperative setting following fracture reduction. As such, the authors describe a modified technique with the goal of maintaining a patent nasal AW, while at the same time, minimizing nasopharyngeal bleeding and nasal AW edema-which can complicate patients requiring intermaxillary fixation (IMF) in the setting of pan-facial trauma. METHODS: A modified technique was devised to assist the reconstruction surgeon in avoiding the risks associated with tracheos
