Psychological correlates of childhood obesity.

To enhance the prevention and intervention efforts of childhood obesity, there is a strong need for the early detection of psychological factors contributing to its development and maintenance. Rather than a stable condition, childhood obesity represents a dynamic process, in which behavior, cognition and emotional regulation interact mutually with each other. Family structure and context, that is, parental and familial attitudes, activity, nutritional patterns as well as familial stress, have an important role with respect to the onset and maintenance of overweight and obesity. Behavioral and

Randomized clinical trial of behavioral intervention and nutrition education to improve caloric intake and weight in children with cystic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a behavioral plus nutrition education intervention, Be In CHARGE!, compared with that of a nutrition education intervention alone on caloric intake and weight gain in children with cystic fibrosis and pancreatic insufficiency. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Cystic fibrosis centers in the eastern, midwestern, and southern United States. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-nine children aged 4 to 12 years below the 40th percentile for weight for age were recruited. Sixty-seven completed the intervention and 59 completed a 24-month follow-up assessment.

Neurophysiological pathways to obesity: below awareness and beyond individual control.

A global obesity epidemic is occurring simultaneously with ongoing increases in the availability and salience of food in the environment. Obesity is increasing across all socioeconomic groups and educational levels and occurs even among individuals with the highest levels of education and expertise in nutrition and related fields. Given these circumstances, it is plausible that excessive food consumption occurs in ways that defy personal insight or are below individual awareness. The current food environment stimulates automatic reflexive responses that enhance the desire to eat and increase c

Optimal positions for the release of primitive neonatal reflexes stimulating breastfeeding.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread skills-teaching, 37% of UK mothers initiating breastfeeding stop by six weeks suggesting a need to reappraise current support strategies. Rooting, sucking and swallowing have been studied extensively but little is known about the role other primitive neonatal reflexes (PNRs) might play to support breastfeeding. AIMS: To describe and compare PNRs observed during feeding, investigating whether certain feeding behaviours and positions, collectively termed Biological Nurturing, (BN) are associated with the release of those reflexes pivotal in establishing successful

Oral health behaviors of children in low and high socioeconomic status families.

PURPOSE: This prospective longitudinal study compared the patterns of oral health behaviors between low and high socioeconomic status (SES) families participating in the Iowa Fluoride Study for a period of 9 years. METHODS: Information on oral health behaviors, including consumption of juices/juice drinks, soda pop, and powder-based drinks, dental visits, and tooth-brushing frequency, was collected longitudinally at periodic intervals from 6 to 108 months of age. Dental exams were conducted at 5 and 9 years of age. Classification of low socioeconomic status (SES; n=70) and high-SES (n= 128) c

[Ten questions on the treatment of obesity: from dieting to surgery].

Advantages and risk of weight reduction achieved by combining diets or unbalanced diets with restriction of carbohydrates or fat are discussed. Nutriments differ according to their density, their flavour, their satiating, and their thermogenic effect. Food is also a source of pleasure and a remedy to frustration. One of the problems of dieting is that most patients regain the weight they have lost due to a hypometabolism secondary to caloric restriction. Only physical exercise together with behavior therapy are able to slow down this weight regain. The indication of drug treatment with orlista

Menstrual function and eating behavior in female recreational weight lifters and competitive body builders.

A group of 103 female weight lifters (WL) and 92 control (C) women answered a survey concerning eating behavior and attitudes (including the Eating Disorder Inventory) and menstrual function. The incidence of menstrual dysfunction, defined as oligomenorrhea plus amenorrhea, was significantly higher for the WL (30%) than for the C (13%) not on contraceptive pills. Only 2% of the women had amenorrhea. The incidence of dysfunction was highest for the subset of 12 WL who had competed in at least one body building competition (COMP); 86% of the COMP not on birth control pills had menstrual dysfunct

Eating attitudes, health-risk behaviors, self-esteem, and anxiety among adolescent females in a suburban high school.

In order to determine whether adolescent females with abnormal eating attitudes display lower levels of self-esteem and higher levels of anxiety than their peers, and whether these adolescents participate in health-risk behaviors to a greater or lesser degree than their peers, we administered a series of questionnaires to the females attending a suburban high school in New York State. The questionnaires, completed by 268 students (mean age, 16.2 years), included data on health-risk behaviors and weight attitudes, an Eating Attitudes Test, a self-esteem scale, and an anxiety inventory. Results

Long-term effect on mother-infant behaviour of extra contact during the first hour post partum. V. Follow-up at three years.

Primiparous mothers and their infants who had had an extra 15-20 minutes skin-to-skin and suckling contact (P+) during the first hour after delivery behaved differently, had a longer duration of breast-feeding, and expressed different opinions on child rearing practices at follow-ups 36 hours, 3 and 12 months after delivery as compared with a control group (P) of primiparous mothers and their infants, who were given routine care immediately after birth. The present report is based on parts of the results of the follow-up at 3 years. Asked in retrospect more P mothers found the time together wi

Effects of haloperidol on schedule-induced polydipsia.

In dose-related amounts, the drug haloperidol attenuated schedule-induced drinking by rats prefed with 0.01-mg drug added to 0, 25, 50, 75 or all of 100 Noyes 45-mg pellets. Drug pellets also induced less drinking than did regular Noyes pellets by rats that obtained these pellets at 1-min intervals by bar pressing. Haloperidol also reduced bar pressing and, temporarily, rate of reinforcement. The results appeared not to be due to a general sedative effect of haloperidol but to its selective power to reduce angiotensin-induced drinking. Thus, schedule-induced drinking, which is abnormal in not

Regional Heterogeneity in the Electromyography Activity of Extrinsic Tongue Muscles Is Critical to Tongue Function.

The tongue, as a muscular hydrostat, performs several dynamic behaviors and functions, including feeding, vocalizing, and respiration. As such, this hydrostat must be capable of performing complex movements, which are powered via a set of muscles typically defined as "extrinsic" (originating outside of the tongue) and "intrinsic" (contained wholly in the tongue). These muscles are typically classified based on their gross anatomical positions and also are often ascribed functions based on these positions, with the extrinsic muscles being assigned the role of positioning the tongue, and the int

Gestational diabetes mellitus induces 5-HT system dysfunction and exacerbates an ASD-like phenotype in male offspring by inhibiting the Ahi1/B9D1/Shh axis.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a significant risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring. Despite the growing interest in the hypothesis of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) system dysfunction, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and require further investigation. In this study, a GDM model was established in mice by feeding them a high fat diet (HFD) and administering an intraperitoneal injection of streptozocin (STZ). Our findings indicated that GDM exposure induced ASD-like behaviors and disrupted 5-HT system function by decreasing the level of Abelson helper integrati

Rhodnius prolixus impairs Trypanosoma cruzi growth through cold-seeking behavioral thermoregulation.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a major neglected tropical disease affecting 6-7 million people worldwide. Rhodnius prolixus, one of the most important vectors of Chagas disease in Latin America, is known to be highly sensitive to environmental temperature, which influences both its biology and parasite development. However, few studies have investigated how this vector behaviorally modulates the effects of temperature by shifting their thermopreference, particularly in response to infection. We investigated how T. cruzi infection of R. prolixus fourth-instar nymph

The Role of Acid Sphingomyelinase Inhibition in Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a consequence of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI). These injuries can result in psychiatric disorders that are treated with amitriptyline. Amitriptyline improves neuronal regeneration in major depression via inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase. We hypothesized that acid sphingomyelinase inhibition would preserve neuronal regeneration and decrease depressive symptoms following rmTBI in a murine model. METHODS: A murine model of rmTBI was established using a weight-drop method. Mice were subjected to mTBI every other day for 7 d. Mic

Overcoming Challenges to Care in the Juvenile Justice System: A Case Study and Commentary.

Ovarian progesterone (Prog) is an essential steroid hormone for the secretion of GnRH and reproductive behavior. It exerts primary effects through the progesterone receptor (PR). When analyzed separately in vitro, PR isoforms (PR-A, PR-B) display striking differences in transcriptional activity. The present study was undertaken to determine the in vivo impact of each isoform on hypothalamic function in female mice with ablation of a single isoform, either PR-A or PR-B. To this end, we used single-cell RNA analyses, reverse transcriptase real-time (q)PCR mRNA analyses of punched-out tissue, imm

Infant psychiatric disorders.

Infant mental health problems include difficulties to regulate emotions or attention, crying, sleeping or feeding problems as well as aggressive behavior. Early identifications of these problems help to change developmental trajectories and improve developmental outcomes. Psychiatric assessment and classification have to take into account the rapid processes of development as well as the inseparable linkage between symptoms of the infant, psychosocial risks in the family environment, and parent-child relations. The proposed DSM-5 classification system presents a systematic description of menta

Childhood sexual abuse moderates the relationship between sexual functioning and eating disorder psychopathology in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: a 1-year follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual dysfunctions that affect all aspects of sexuality are common in patients with eating disorders. However, only few studies have provided longitudinal information on sexual functioning in patients with eating disorders. AIM: To evaluate the longitudinal course of sexual functioning, and how changes in psychopathology and history of childhood abuse interact with sexual functioning in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: A total of 27 patients with AN and 31 with BN were assessed at baseline and at 1-year follow-up after a standard individua

Eat less and exercise more - is it really enough to knock down the obesity pandemia?

Reduced physical activity and abundant energy intake are two most common factors leading to uncontrolled body weight gain. But these factors are not under entire internal consciousness control; they are also partially genetically determined and are affected by for example food marketing practices. In addition to these two widely accepted factors, there are some other factors, whose could also contribute to the recent increase of obesity prevalence. For example, non-exercise activity thermogenesis, sleeping habits, more stable inside room temperatures (using of heating and air conditioning), hi

A novel skilled-reaching impairment in paw supination on the "good" side of the hemi-Parkinson rat improved with rehabilitation.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural abnormalities ascribed to the loss of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA). Symptoms similar to the human condition can be produced in the rat by DA-depleting 6-hydroxydopamine injections made into the nigrostriatal system. After a unilateral lesion, the rat symptoms include sensory and motor impairments and turning biases reflecting motor abnormalities to the contralateral-to-depletion side of the body. In addition, a number of studies on skilled reaching report impairments in the use of the ipsilateral limb. It is su
