Cefoperazone compared with chloramphenicol in the treatment of typhoid fever.

The authors have conducted an open randomized study to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of cefoperazone with those of chloramphenicol in the treatment of typhoid fever. A variety of infectious and noninfectious pulmonary disorders can present with pulmonary infiltrates with peripheral eosinophilia. Specific therapies are available for many of the pulmonary eosinophilic syndromes and failure to treat these syndromes can result in the development of irreversible lung disease. Clearly, an infectious etiology needs to be excluded before initiating glucocorticoid therapy for a presumed hypersensitivity reaction. We treated 20 febrile episodes in 14 patients with granulocytopenia under 1.0 x 10(9)/L. 6 episodes were pretreated, in 14 Imipenem/Cilastatin was the initial therapy. Seroepidemiology of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Bulgaria.

During the period of 1954-1986, 399 cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) were registered in Bulgaria with 63 (15.7%) deaths. Three hundred serum samples from 214 patients who had contracted the disease from 1957 to 1986 were investigated by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IF-AT). Seroepidemiology of Q fever in New Brunswick and Manitoba.

A seroepidemiological survey, using an indirect immunofluorescence test, was carried out on serum samples obtained from New Brunswick and Manitoba blood donors during 1986. The antigens were Coxiella burnetii phase I and phase II from strain Nine Mile. Eighty of the 503 (15.9%) Manitoba blood donors had a phase II antibody titer of greater than or equal to 1:8, while 41 (4.2%) of the 966 New Brunswick blood donors had such antibodies. A note concerning the analysis of an epidemic of Q fever.

Techniques of statistical analysis developed for the analysis of experiments, for which the usual precautions of randomization ensure independence, are not necessarily appropriate to the analysis of epidemics. An outbreak of Q Fever in a Swiss Alpine valley previously reported in the International Journal of Epidemiology is analysed to make this point.

In studies of Lassa fever in Sierra Leone, the prevalence of human antibody to Lassa virus ranged from 8% to 52%. An unexpected Q fever endocarditis. Report of a case.

A man with blood culture negative endocarditis since 1983 received in October 1984 a mitral valve bioprosthesis. Reintervention in April 1985 was performed because of a paravalvular leak. In September 1985, mitral insufficiency reappeared and high-titer phase II Q fever antibody was detected, which has since then persisted with concomitant high-titers of phase I antibody.
