"Satiety molecules" - nesfatin-1 and glucagon-like peptide 1 in blood serum in patients with anorexia nervosa and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Nesfatin-1 (NESF-1) is a neuropeptide occurring in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Strongly associated with anxiety, it regulates glucose levels and is a negative modulator of food intake. Intracerebroventricularly injected nesfatin-1 in experimental animals inhibits food intake, whereas administration of a NESF-1 neutralizing antibody stimulates their appetite. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), a gastrointestinal ormone released ca. 15-30 min. after a meal, demonstrates incretin properties. Peripheral administration of GLP-1 stimulates the secretion of gastric

Differential effects of overexpression of mutant huntingtin and TDP-43 in agouti-related protein neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus in mice.

The spectrum of frontotemporal dementia/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FTD/ALS) and Huntington disease (HD) are fatal neurodegenerative disorders with no major disease-modifying therapies. Recent work has shown that the hallmark pathological proteins TAR DNA binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) in FTD/ALS and mutant huntingtin (mHTT) in HD may be interlinked. Furthermore, these disorders share early features of altered metabolism and psychiatric symptoms that have been suggested to arise from pathology in the hypothalamus, an important brain region involved in the regulation of metabolism and em

Isolation and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus from raw cow's milk in dairy farms of Wolaita Sodo Town, Southwest, Ethiopia.

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium-contaminating milk and milk products causing food poisoning primarily due to its enterotoxins. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to June 2022 in Wolaita Sodo Town, to detect Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in raw cow's milk and assess their resistance levels to different antimicrobials. Purposive sampling was used to select 34 dairy farms. Accordingly, 419 raw milk samples from the farm and collection centers were collected. Isolates of S. aureus showing resistance to Cefoxitin were classified as MRSA. Fr

High prevalence of porcine cysticercosis in slaughtered pigs in Rwanda: An abattoir survey.

Porcine cysticercosis (PC) is an important public health problem, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, but limited information is available on the prevalence of infection in pigs entering the food chain. Existing diagnostic methods vary in accuracy and efficiency; whole carcass dissection is the most reliable method but is labour-intensive and destroys the carcass so can only be used in a research setting. Serological tests offer lower specificity, while meat inspection and lingual examination lack sensitivity, hampering accurate estimates and the removal of infected pigs from the food chain. Her

'You have to use everything and come to some equilibrium': a qualitative study on hypoglycemia self-management in users of continuous glucose monitor with diverse hypoglycemia experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Although continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMs) can help reduce hypoglycemia, about one-quarter of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who use CGMs still either spend at least 1% of the time with dangerously low blood glucose or develop severe hypoglycemia. This study explored experiences around hypoglycemia self-management in people who are living with T1D and using CGMs to identify factors contributing to hypoglycemia development. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Purposive sampling and semistructured interviews with 28 respondents with T1D and using CGMs were conducted to expl

Ingested Chicken Bone (Xiphoid Process) in the Anal Canal: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Accidental foreign body (FB) ingestion is common in the elderly, particularly edentulous and denture wearers. The most commonly ingested FBs are food-related, including fish and chicken bones. While small FBs can pass through the gastrointestinal tract without any complications, large or irregular-shaped FBs usually cause complications. These complications include choking, ulceration, perforation, fistula, abscess formation, or even death. Ingestion of a large chicken bone that reaches the anal canal without causing injury is extremely rare. We present a rare case of accidental chicken bone (x

DNA methylation inhibition participates in the anterograde amnesia key mechanism through the suppression of the transcription of genes involved in memory formation in grape snails.

The study of the amnesia mechanisms is of both theoretical and practical importance. The mechanisms of anterograde amnesia are the least studied, due to the lack of an experimental model that allows studying this amnesia type molecular and cellular mechanisms. Previously, we found that conditional food aversion memory reconsolidation impairment in snails by NMDA glutamate receptor antagonists led to the amnesia induction, in the late stages of which (>10 days) repeated training did not cause long-term memory formation. In the same animals, long-term memory aversion to a new food type was forme

An essential vesicular-trafficking phospholipase mediates neutral lipid synthesis and contributes to hemozoin formation in Plasmodium falciparum.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum is the pathogen responsible for the most devastating form of human malaria. As it replicates asexually in the erythrocytes of its human host, the parasite feeds on haemoglobin uptaken from these cells. Heme, a toxic by-product of haemoglobin utilization by the parasite, is neutralized into inert hemozoin in the food vacuole of the parasite. Lipid homeostasis and phospholipid metabolism are crucial for this process, as well as for the parasite's survival and propagation within the host. P. falciparum harbours a uniquely large family of phospholipases, which are

Does intervention with GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide modulate perception of sweet taste in women with obesity: study protocol of a randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies demonstrated that glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is locally synthesized in taste bud cells and that GLP-1 receptor exists on the gustatory nerves in close proximity to GLP-1-containing taste bud cells. This local paracrine GLP-1 signalling seems to be specifically involved in the perception of sweets. However, the role of GLP-1 in taste perception remains largely unaddressed in clinical studies. Whether any weight-reducing effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists are mediated through the modulation of taste perception is currently unknown. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This

Studies on the Anti-Angiogenic Activities of Wild and Cultivated Orostachys japonicus Extracts in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells.

Orostachys japonicus has traditionally been used as a food product and a fork medicine in Asia to treat various diseases. Angiogenesis is a critical process that contributes to various chronic diseases via excessive delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Common anti-angiogenic drugs have serious problems related to high costs and side effects; thus, natural products with low costs and no cytotoxicity have garnered increasing interest. In this study, we evaluated and compared the anti-angiogenic effects and phenolic compound contents between wild (WOEs) and cultivated O. japonicus extracts (COEs) pr

Marine fog inputs appear to increase methylmercury bioaccumulation in a coastal terrestrial food web.

Coastal marine atmospheric fog has recently been implicated as a potential source of ocean-derived monomethylmercury (MMHg) to coastal terrestrial ecosystems through the process of sea-to-land advection of foggy air masses followed by wet deposition. This study examined whether pumas (Puma concolor) in coastal central California, USA, and their associated food web, have elevated concentrations of MMHg, which could be indicative of their habitat being in a region that is regularly inundated with marine fog. We found that adult puma fur and fur-normalized whiskers in our marine fog-influenced st

Dietary signals in the premolar dentition of primates.

Dietary adaptations specific to the premolar row remain largely undocumented across primates. This study examines how relative premolar size varies among broad dietary groups (i.e., folivores, frugivores, insectivores, hard-object feeders) using a phylogenetically and ecologically diverse sample of species. We quantified relative premolar size with shape ratios computed using mandibular length, body mass, palate area, and M1 area to evaluate hypotheses that link variation in relative premolar size to differences in tooth loading, energy requirements, the probability of tooth-food-tooth contact

Leptin and the control of food intake: neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract are activated by both gastric distension and leptin.

Leptin reduces food intake by an unspecified mechanism. Studies show that forebrain ventricular leptin delivery increases the inhibitory effects of gastrointestinal (GI) stimulation on intake and amplifies the electrophysiological response to gastric distension in neurons of the medial subnucleus of the nucleus tractus solitarius (mNTS). However, forebrain ventricular delivery leaves unspecified the neuroanatomical site(s) mediating leptin's effect on intake. Detailed anatomical analysis in rats and mice by phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 immunohistochemistry

Regional and international approaches on prevention and control of animal transboundary and emerging diseases.

Transboundary animal diseases pose a serious risk to the world animal agriculture and food security and jeopardize international trade. The world has been facing devastating economic losses from major outbreaks of transboundary animal diseases (TADs) such as foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever, rinderpest, peste des petits ruminants (PPR), and Rift Valley fever. Lately the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) due to H5N1 virus, has become an international crisis as all regions around the world can be considered at risk. In the past decades, public health authorities within indust

Orexins and appetite regulation.

Initial research on the functional significance of two novel hypothalamic neuropeptides, orexin-A and orexin-B, suggested an important role in appetite regulation. Since then, however, these peptides have also been shown to influence a wide range of other physiological and behavioural processes. In this paper, we review the now quite extensive literature on orexins and appetite control, and consider their additional effects within this context. Although the evidence for orexin (particularly orexin-A and the orexin-1 receptor) involvement in many aspects of ingestive physiology and behaviour is

Ethanol enhances naloxone sensitization and disrupts morphine discrimination--comparison to dizocilpine and pentobarbital: explanation of enhancing acute and attenuating chronic effects.

1. Ethanol affects ligand-gated ion channels as a positive modulator of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA(A)) receptor function and an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist. NMDA antagonists attenuate chronic drug effects. Accordingly, we found that ethanol decreased morphine dependence and locomotor sensitization. We now test whether ethanol alters sensitization to the disrupting effects of naloxone on schedule-controlled responding after morphine administration or affects the acute stimulus effects of morphine. 2. Groups of rats, trained to lever-press for food, were co-administered ethanol (1

Characterization of two forms of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide precursors in goldfish: molecular cloning and distribution, modulation of expression by nutritional status, and interactions with leptin.

Complementary DNAs encoding two forms of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide precursors were identified from goldfish brain and named CART I and CART II. Each cDNA contains a signal peptide sequence, the putative CART-like peptide, and a carboxy-terminal extension peptide. Form I encodes a 117-amino acid pro-CART, whereas form II encodes a 120-amino acid pro-CART. Both forms resemble mammalian CART peptides. Each goldfish CART precursor is encoded by three exons interrupted by two introns within genomic DNA. RT-PCR, slot blot, and Northern blot analysis showed that the

Responses of the digestive tract of the omnivorous northern brown bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus (Marsupialia: Peramelidae), to plant- and insect-containing diets.

The gastrointestinal tract of omnivores such as bandicoots (Marsupialia: Peramelidae) must be able to process foods as different as invertebrates, fungi and plant material. We studied the mechanisms involved in the utilisation by captive northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus) of insect larvae and milled lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay incorporated into a basal diet of a commercial small carnivore mix. Animals on the plant-basal mix digested less dry matter, energy, lipid, fibre and total nitrogen, but consumed 79% more dry matter than those on the insect-basal mix. Consequently intake of

Microplastics and Nanoplastics in the Human Diet: Sources of Exposure, Bioavailability, Toxicokinetics, and Systemic Health Effects.

Background/Objectives: Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as ubiquitous environmental contaminants resulting from the extensive production, use, and degradation of plastic materials. Human exposure occurs primarily through contaminated food and drinking water, with inhalation representing an additional important route. Growing concern has focused on the ability of these particles, particularly NPs, to cross biological barriers, enter the systemic circulation, and reach human tissues. The aim of this review was to summarize current evidence on dietary exposure to MPs and NP
