Mental Disorders After Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Implantation in Young Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Increasing use of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has raised concerns about psychological distress in young adults. We evaluated the risk of incident mental disorders after CIED implantation. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance database, we identified individuals aged 20 to 39 years who underwent health checkups in 2009 to 2012. Those receiving a new CIED within 4 years were included, and controls were selected by 1:5 matching for age, sex, and index year. The primary outcome was a composite of newly diagnosed mental disorders (mood disorders and anx

Integrating Lab- and Field-Based Approaches to Decipher Individuals' Response to Anthropogenic Change.

The global expansion of human activities increasingly exposes wild animals to novel, potentially threatening conditions. Consistent behavioural responses to perceived risk may be detrimental to wildlife, either by limiting foraging opportunities or by overexposing them to lethal hazards. We examine the relationship between risk responses, movement patterns and survival in fan-tailed ravens (Corvus rhipidurus) inhabiting Israel's Dead Sea coastline. We found consistent individual differences assessed through controlled laboratory assays (novel food, objects, environment and foraging near humans

A multi-modal dataset for insect biodiversity with imagery and DNA at the trap and individual level.

Insects comprise millions of species, many experiencing severe population declines under environmental and habitat changes. High-throughput approaches are crucial for accelerating our understanding of insect diversity, with DNA barcoding and high-resolution imaging showing strong potential for automatic taxonomic classification. However, most image-based approaches rely on individual specimen data, unlike the unsorted bulk samples collected in large-scale ecological surveys. We present the Mixed Arthropod Sample Segmentation and Identification (MassID45) dataset for training automatic classifi

Worsened multitasking performance with simulated hearing protection correlates with individuals' choice not to "wear" it.

INTRODUCTION: Workers' reasons for not wearing hearing protection devices (HPDs) largely come from performance issues that occur while wearing. Research has shown that such complaints are justified in regard to auditory situational awareness (e.g., speech comprehension), but other aspects of work performance (e.g., multitasking ability) are rarely characterized. Further, the relationship between HPD-related performance worsening and the choice to wear an HPD has not been objectively characterized. We address both gaps in the literature here. METHODS: Participants were presented with moving ob

Influences of the built environment in physical activity participation in individuals with disabilities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity remains a critical public health concern for individuals with disabilities, who often encounter environmental and structural barriers to participation. Although research on built environment characteristics and physical activity (PA) has expanded, evidence specific to individuals with disabilities remains fragmented and requires clearer conceptual integration. This systematic review synthesises evidence on built environment characteristics associated with PA participation among individuals with disabilities. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across

The School-to-Guardian Pipeline: Understanding the Medical and Social Implications for Individuals with Significant Disabilities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As children move from being a minor to 18 and over as adults, the decision-making power shifts from the parent to the now adult child. That is unless legal guardianship is sought. One of the first encounters parents begin to really process the ramifications of this change is at school during individualized education program (IEP) transition planning meetings which begin for students with disabilities as early as 14 years in some states and school systems and required by federal law to occur by 16 years old. Local education agencies, or school districts, are required to infor

Individualized prediction of survival after brain metastasis development in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with breast cancer are at high risk for developing brain and central nervous system metastases (BrM), which are aggressive and clinically challenging. This study aimed to assess the impact of clinico-genomic factors on BrM survival in breast cancer and to develop a validated nomogram for survival probability. METHODS: Clinico-genomic data on breast cancer patients were obtained from the AACR GENIE Biopharma Collaborative. These data were split into training and testing sets by academic institution. Using data from the training set, BrM survival was evaluated through mul

Dynamic processes in narcissism and affect across Chinese and American individuals: A registered report.

Recent research has examined the state dynamics of narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability and of positive and negative affect, yet few studies have directly linked the two conceptually similar constructs or addressed their conceptual overlap, especially beyond Western samples. In this study, we used a newly collected Chinese sample (N = 594, observations = 26,802) and an existing American data set (N = 862, observations = 36,631) to investigate the dynamics of narcissism and affect in daily life. Using dynamic structural equation modeling, we characterized these dynamics through key indica

Physiological and molecular effects of individual and mixtures of drugs of abuse in Crassostrea virginica larvae.

Drugs of abuse (DAs) are increasingly detected in surface waters, yet their effects on marine organisms remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the impacts of environmentally relevant concentrations (100 and 1000 ng L⁻¹) of cannabinol, codeine, and methamphetamine, individually and in mixtures, on the growth and development of Crassostrea virginica larvae. Eight-day exposures significantly reduced larval survival, impaired growth, and altered swimming behavior, with mixtures producing the strongest effects. At 1000 ng L⁻¹ , cumulative survival reached zero in mixture and cannabinol grou

Gait Alterations Due to DCC Gene Variants in Individuals with Congenital Mirror Movements.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Mirror Movement Syndrome (CMMS) involves involuntary movements on one side of the body while voluntary movements are performed on the other side. They disrupt left-right coordination and can be caused by a pathogenic variant in the DCC gene. CMMS have been extensively studied in the upper limb, but its impact on lower limb during gait in humans is unclear. OBJECTIVES: Determine the impact of CMMS on locomotor patterns in individuals with a DCC pathogenic variant. METHODS: The gait pattern of seven individuals with a DCC pathogenic variant and ten healthy controls was a

Financial Barriers, Mental Health, and Medication Nonadherence Among Individuals With Chronic Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain has been associated with comorbid psychological symptoms and prescription medication nonadherence, including nonadherence due to financial limitations. Despite noted independent associations with chronic pain, the association of medication nonadherence and psychological symptoms in the context of chronic pain is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the associations between depression and anxiety medication nonadherence due to cost among adults living with chronic pain. METHOD: Data from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey were utilized in these anal

Correlation between plantar pressure and foot morphology in 65 + year-old individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between plantar pressure (PP) and clinically easy-to-measure foot morphology parameters in 65 + year-old individuals. METHODS: Sixty-two 65 + year-old individuals (28 males and 34 females) participated in the experiment. Three foot morphology parameters were measured: hallux valgus angle, navicular height (normalized by foot length), and calcaneal angle. Participants walked at a self-selected comfortable speed along a 6-meter walkway. PP was measured as they passed over a 2-meter platform located at the walkway midpoint.

Evidence-based dental management strategies for individuals with congenital hemophilia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People with hemophilia commonly present with a range of bleeding symptoms, from minor oral cavity bleeds to life-threatening events such as intracranial hemorrhage. People with hemophilia often exhibit poor oral health, attributed to disease-specific barriers and a fear of dental procedures, which may exacerbate their oral disease burden. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the various dental procedures performed in patients with hemophilia and the corresponding clotting factor concentrate replacement regimens used for individuals with mild, moderate, and severe forms of the d

Multicancer Detection Tests for Population-Wide Screening of Asymptomatic Individuals: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Multicancer detection (MCD) tests aim to detect different cancer types using a single test. However, evidence on their potential for screening asymptomatic populations remains limited. We consolidated evidence from prospective cohort studies evaluating blood-based MCD tests in primarily asymptomatic adults to contextualize upcoming randomized controlled trial results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We updated and extended a prior review (to September 2023), conducting comprehensive Medline/Embase searches to February 1, 2026. Key outcomes included cancers detected and not detected by MCD tes

[End-stage kidney disease in older adults : towards individualized decision-making].

Population aging and the high prevalence of chronic kidney disease in adults aged ≥ 65 years support a nephrogeriatric approach that integrates frailty, comorbidities, and individual care goals into the management of end-stage kidney disease. Kidney transplantation offers the greatest survival and quality of life benefits when a standard-criteria or living-donor graft is available. However, these benefits are not clearly demonstrated in older patients receiving marginal kidneys. Dialysis generally prolongs survival compared to conservative management, but this advantage diminishes with advanci

Cardiovascular Functioning Features in Individuals with Connective Tissue Dysplasia Engaged in Sports for the Disabled.

OBJECTIVES: Connective tissue dysplasia (CTD) is associated with disorders of collagen synthesis and is widely spread among the healthy population and people with disabilities. In the heart, primarily in the left ventricle (LV), CTD manifests itself as the formation of false tendons (LVFTs) to maintain close-to-normal LV pump function. This exploratory work is devoted to the search for general patterns of cardiac response to physical activity in athletes with disabilities, CTD, and LVFTs. The extent to which "the type of sports or the type of disability" determines the involvement of the heart
