Pregnancy outcome in women with sickle cell - a five year review.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the cases of sickle cell anaemia in obstetric practice, and to highlight their problems in pregnancy as well as their contribution to maternal and foetal outcome in Nigeria. We believe that the findings would be useful for designing interventions to reduce the obstetric burden of sickle cell disease. PATIENTS AND MATERIALS: The service delivery record of 42 pregnancies in 39 patients with sickle cell disease was retrospectively reviewed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) between January 2000 and December 2004. RESULTS: The incidence of sickle cell dis

Maternal and perinatal outcome of preeclampsia with an onset before 24 weeks' gestation. Audit in a tertiary referral center.

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia, with an onset before 24 weeks' gestation is a rare but severe condition in pregnancy with little data of maternal and perinatal outcome, particularly after expectant management. We therefore, evaluated pregnancy outcome in these women at our department where temporising management was introduced as the standard policy in early onset preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: We analysed retrospectively all consecutive women with preeclampsia, with an onset before 24 weeks' gestation, between 1 January 1993 and 31 December 2002 at a tertiary university referral center. RESULTS: Twen

Major congenital anomalies at birth in Benghazi, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, 1995.

A study was conducted to investigate the magnitude, nature and associated risk factors of major congenital anomalies (MCAs) at birth in Benghazi, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in 1995. The incidence of MCAs was 7.4 per 1000 live births and 9.3 per 1000 total births. The rate was higher in summer, in babies born to mothers over 40 years and low-birth-weight babies or those born preterm or post-term. In 56.1% of cases there were multiple congenital anomalies and > two-thirds of the major congenital anomalies were chromosomal, musculoskeletal or of the central nervous system. The incidence of perinatal

Detrimental Complications Of Meconium Aspiration Syndrome And Their Impact On Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is respiratory distress in an infant born through meconium stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) whose signs cannot be otherwise explained. MAS is associated with different complications. Many studies have been conducted in developed world to find the outcome associated with MAS but data from developing countries is lacking. Present study was conducted to determine the impact of chemical pneumonitis, pulmonary hypertension (PHN) and air leak on outcome of new-borns with MAS. METHODS: This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted in a tertiary care

Assessing fetal growth impairments based on family data as a tool for identifying high-risk babies. An example with neonatal mortality.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight is associated with an increased risk of neonatal and infant mortality and morbidity, as well as with other adverse conditions later in life. Since the birth weight-specific mortality of a second child depends on the birth weight of an older sibling, a failure to achieve the biologically intended size appears to increase the risk of adverse outcome even in babies who are not classified as small for gestation. In this study, we aimed at quantifying the risk of neonatal death as a function of a baby's failure to fulfil its biologic growth potential across the whole di…

Birth Defects and Mortality-Related Factors in Colombia: Insights from a Surveillance Cohort (2002-2019).

INTRODUCTION: Birth defects are a leading cause of neonatal mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In Latin America, longitudinal studies on BD prevalence and mortality remain limited. OBJECTIVES: To describe BD epidemiology in Bogotá and Cali (2002-2019), focusing on prevalence, in-hospital mortality, and associated maternal and neonatal factors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based cohort study using PREVERDEC surveillance data from 558 057 births, following Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECLAMC) methodolog

High cumulative antibiotic exposure in extremely low birth weight infants during the first month of life: Risk factors and clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birthweight (ELBW) infants invariably receive multiple antibiotic therapies during hospitalization. However, the causes of high cumulative antibiotic exposure, as well as the impact of such exposure on the outcomes of preterm infants, particularly long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, remain to be elucidated. Furthermore, the cumulative effects of simultaneous use of multiple antibiotics are often overlooked. METHODS: We included ELBW infants born between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2020. The duration of antibiotic therapy was calculated as Days of Therapy (DO

Incidence and outcomes of acute kidney injury in extremely-low-birth-weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common event in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), especially in extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants. This cohort study investigated the incidence of and risk factors for AKI in ELBW infants and their overall survival at the postmenstrual age (PMA) of 36 weeks. METHODS: All ELBW infants admitted to our NICU between January 2010 and December 2013 were enrolled. Those who died prior to 72 hours of life, had congenital renal abnormality, or had only one datum of the serum creatinine (SCr) level after the first 24 hours of life were excluded.

Drug-associated severe cutaneous adverse events in infants: Results of a disproportionality analysis from the USFDA adverse event reporting system.

BACKGROUND: Severe cutaneous adverse events (SCAEs) in infants are rare but they can be life-threatening. Despite the increased susceptibility of infants to adverse drug reactions, there are limited data on drug-associated SCAEs in this population. This study aimed to identify drugs associated with SCAEs in infants using the USFDA Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) through disproportionality analysis. METHODS: Data from 82 quarters (March 2004 to June 2024) were extracted from the USFDA AERS. Severe cutaneous reactions were identified using the Standardized MedDRA Query (SMQ) for "severe c

Outcomes and complications of invasive versus non-invasive respiratory support in extremely preterm infants: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Because the respiratory system of extremely/very preterm infants is immature, respiratory support is essential to their care; however, the effects of invasive and non-invasive ventilation modes on prognosis and complications remain controversial. The efficacy and safety of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP), and non-invasive high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (NHFOV) were to be compared in extremely/very preterm infants.  METHODS: Clinical data from 220 extremely/very preterm infants admitted between January 2024 and March 2

Comparison of the effect of surfactant with and without budesonide on the outcomes of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants: a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a common problem in premature infants, whose treatment with surfactant increases their survival. Surfactant does not reduce chronic complications such as chronic lung disease. Using budesonide with surfactant may reduce some of these complications. This study aimed to compare the effect of surfactant with and without budesonide on the outcomes of RDS in infants. METHODS: This double-blind, randomised control trial was conducted from September 2023 to April 2024 in the neonatal intensive care unit of Afzalipour Hospital, Kerman, Iran, on premat
