Qualitative study on the sense of meaning in life in uremic patients undergoing initial hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: For patients with uraemia, the most effective treatment, aside from surgical interventions like kidney transplantation, is maintenance haemodialysis. This study aims to explore the sense of meaning in life experienced by patients undergoing their first session of haemodialysis. METHODS: This qualitative study employed purposive sampling to select 11 patients, followed by

The Supportive Care Needs of Individuals Living With Advanced or Metastatic Lung Cancer Receiving Targeted or Immunotherapies.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer is associated with the highest incidence and mortality of all cancers. New treatments, called targeted therapies (TT) and immunotherapies (IO), offer higher treatment efficacy and fewer side effects compared to traditional treatments but are accompanied by uncertainty and an unpredictable treatment course. There is a paucity of research on the experiences of individuals living with advanced or metastatic lung cancer receiving TT/IO, and even less is known about the supportive care needs of this population. METHODS: Twenty four participants from across Canada participate

A critical ethnographic perspective on risk and dangerousness in forensic psychiatry.

In the Canadian forensic psychiatric context, the concepts of risk and dangerousness interact, intersect, and morph into the notion of significant threat to the safety of the public. Stemming from the results of a critical ethnography of the Ontario Review Board, this article unpacks the central role of forensic psychiatric nursing, as an example of a 'psych' discipline (e.g., psychiatry and psychology), in a system that is built to produce risky persons and to legitimize their detention and supervision. By using excerpt of interviews conducted with nurses, ethnographic observations of Review

The Science-Based Pathways to Understanding False Confessions and Wrongful Convictions.

This review shows that there is now a solid scientific evidence base for the "expert" evaluation of disputed confession cases in judicial proceedings. Real-life cases have driven the science by stimulating research into "coercive" police questioning techniques, psychological vulnerabilities to false confession, and the development and validation of psychometric tests of interrogative suggestibility and compliance. Mandatory electronic recording of police interviews has helped with identifying the situational and personal "risk factors" involved in false confessions and how these interact. It i

Identifying psychosocial and familial correlates and the impact of the stressful life events in the onset of anorexia nervosa: Control-case study (ANOBAS): Psychosocial and familial correlates and stressful life events in AN.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a multifactorial illness. Although several studies have determined which factors could predispose AN, few studies have determined which factors could precipitate it. What is more, it has been suggested that having experienced stressful life events (SLE) could be related to the onset of AN. The aim of this study was to explore specific psychosocial and familial correlates and the impact of SLE in the onset of AN. Following a case-control design, 40 adolescents diagnosed with AN were matched to three control groups, 40 healthy adolescents, 40 adolescents with affective d
