[Aetiology of intestinal parasites in a sample of students from Mozambique].

The purpose of this survey is to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites in a population of Mozambican students. Ninety five faecal samples were collected at the three schools in Marrere, Mozambique, for a period of about one week. Observations of fresh and Giemsa-stained samples were performed at the laboratory of the Geral de Marrere Hospital; observation after concentration (FEA) was performed later at the Microbiology Laboratory of the S. Maria Nuova Hospital (Reggio Emilia, Italy). The results show a high rate of intestinal parasites among the subjects examined, supported mainly by

The prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs and cats in Calgary, Alberta.

The prevalence of endoparasites was evaluated in 619 dogs and 153 cats in the Calgary, Alberta region. Both homed and shelter-sourced pets were evaluated, and prevalence was assessed in various age groups. The overall endoparasite prevalence was 16.5% in canine samples and 7.2% in feline samples. The most common intestinal parasites in dogs were Giardia (8.1%) and ascarids (4.2%). The most common feline endoparasite was ascarids (6.5%). This study will help veterinarians to better plan diagnostic and preventative strategies with regard to companion animal intestinal parasites.

Apple-peel atresia presenting as foetal intestinal obstruction.

Apple-peel atresia or Type 3 jejuno-ileal atresia (JIA) is an uncommon cause of foetal intestinal obstruction. Bowel obstruction in the foetus is diagnosed on the prenatal ultrasonography only in 50% cases. We report a case in which foetal intestinal obstruction was diagnosed on prenatal ultrasonography. The child showed signs of intestinal obstruction on day one after birth, for which an exploratory laparotomy was performed. Type 3 JIA was found for which resection of atretic segments with jejuno-ascending colon anastomosis was preformed.

Unraveling the ties between celiac disease and intestinal microbiota.

Celiac disease is a multifactorial disorder that involves interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Gluten proteins are responsible for the symptoms of celiac disease, but other environmental factors that influence the intestinal ecosystem, including the milk-feeding type and gastrointestinal infections, may also play a role. Moreover, intestinal dysbiosis, characterized by increased Gram-negative bacteria and reduced bifidobacteria, has been detected in celiac disease patients. This review summarizes current knowledge of the associations between the intestinal microbiota and cel

[Free radical processes in patients with the gastro-intestinal bleedings].

The role of the free radical processes (FRP) is shown and objectified in the development of the ulcer gastro-intestinal bleedings (UGIB). It is revealed on the first day of hospitalization already. The greatest imbalance of the FRP is registered in heavy patients with acute UGIB. It appeared like decrease of the oxygen and activation of the lipid FRP disregulation. Unheavy patients have FRP changes refer to the oxygen part of the oxidation process only. Intensification FRP in process of increase of weight disease consists in decrease activity oxygen and increase a lipid disbalance. FRP disbala

[Actual status and vision of NSAIDs-induced intestinal injuries].

Recent studies, included using capsule endoscopy and balloon endoscopy, have revealed that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause a variety of abnormalities in the intestine. Several reports show that NSAIDs included acetylsalicylic acid can induce small intestinal injuries with high prevalence in patients taken these drugs. These reports have shown that the preventive effect of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) does not extend to the small intestine, suggesting that concomitant therapy may be required to prevent small intestinal side effects associated with NSAIDs use. Recently,

[A case of accessory papilla of duodenum causing intestinal bleeding].

A 50-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a chief complaint of melena. An emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopic study revealed arterial bleeding from a duodenal submucosal tumor, 1.5cm in diameter and about 2cm in an oral direction from the papilla of Vater. Because it was not possible to stop the bleeding, an emergency resection of the tumor was performed. Macroscopically, the ulcerated tumor was approximately 1.5cm in diameter. Histopathologically, the tumor was determined to be located in the accessory papilla of the duodenum. We report here a rare case of bleeding from the

Excipient-mediated supersaturation stabilization in human intestinal fluids.

It was the purpose of this study to investigate excipient-mediated precipitation inhibition upon induction of supersaturation of poorly water-soluble drugs in aspirated human intestinal fluids (HIF) representing both the fasted and fed state. Etravirine, ritonavir, loviride, danazol and fenofibrate were selected as model compounds. For comparative purposes, precipitation inhibition was also evaluated in simple aqueous buffer, and in intestinal simulation media representative for the fasted and fed state (FaSSIF and FeSSIF, respectively). Supersaturation was induced in the test media containing

A case of intestinal mucormycosis in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

A 3-year-old female common marmoset was euthanatized because of wasting. Grossly, a perforating lesion was present in the jejunum and hemorrhagic lesions in the cecum and colon. Histopathologically, these gross lesions were a perforated jejunal ulcer and necrotizing colitis, respectively. Necrotizing colitis was characterized by extensive mucosal necrosis along with numerous ribbon-shaped aseptate hyphae. These aseptate hyaline hyphae were positively stained with PAS and GMS, and reacted immunohistochemically with the antibody against the family Mucoraceae. This case was diagnosed as intestina

Stool calprotectin monitoring after small intestine transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Small intestine transplantation is the only life-saving therapy available for patients with intestinal failure and life-threatening complications of parenteral nutrition, but it is still plagued by high levels of early acute rejection. The ability to diagnose rejection noninvasively, ideally before pathologic manifestations, would be a major advance in the care of intestinal transplant patients. METHODS: We measured calprotectin levels in 732 stool samples collected, analyzed over from 72 patients having undergone 74 total transplants, and correlated them with clinical indications

Enteric neuronal density contributes to the severity of intestinal inflammation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Enteric neurons have been reported to be increased in inflamed regions of the bowel in patients with inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal neurogangliomatosis. It is impossible to determine whether this hyperinnervation predates intestinal inflammation, results from it, or contributes to its severity in humans, so we studied this process in mice. METHODS: To determine whether the density of enteric neurons determines the severity of inflammation, we studied transgenic mice that have greater than normal (NSE-noggin mice, which overexpress noggin under the control of the n

Liver transplantation: A new risk factor for intestinal intussusceptions.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal intussusception in adults is associated with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, abdominal tumors or previous abdominal surgery but most often of unknown origin. AIM: The aim of our study was to evaluate circumstances and identify risk factors for intussusceptions. METHODS: All 65,928 abdominal ultrasound examinations performed at our tertiary medical center between January 2001 and June 2008 were analyzed retrospectively for the diagnosis "intussusception". After identifying individuals with sonographically proven intussusception we analyzed various pa

The role of eosinophils and mast cells in intestinal functional disease.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common and currently defined by a symptom-based classification with no discernable pathology. In functional dyspepsia (FD), the duodenum is now implicated as a key area where symptoms originate. This is attributed to immune activation with increasing evidence indicating a role for duodenal eosinophilia. In irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), mastocytosis has been documented throughout the small and large intestine. Eosinophils and mast cells are an important link between innate and adaptive immunity, and are important in allergic type TH2 inflammati

Implications of intestinal metaplasia of the gallbladder in children with pancreaticobiliary maljunction.

PURPOSE: Pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM) is associated with an increased frequency of gallbladder malignancy. Intestinal metaplasia is often observed in gallbladder disease and is a risk factor for gallbladder carcinoma in adults. The hyperplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma progression is one of the possible mechanisms involved in biliary carcinogenesis. In this study, we evaluate the gallbladders of children with PBM for intestinal metaplasia and other histological changes. METHODS: From January 1997 to July 2010, 45 children with PBM were treated at our institution. A total of 42 children were
