Isolated complex III (CIII) deficiencies are among the least frequently diagnosed mitochondrial disorders. Clinical symptoms range from isolated myopathy to severe multi-systemic disorders with early death and disability. To date, we know of pathogenic variants in genes encoding five out of 10 subunits and five out of 13 assembly factors of CIII. Here we describe rare bi-allelic variants in the gene of a catalytic subunit of CIII, UQCRFS1, which encodes the Rieske iron-sulfur protein, in two unrelated individuals. Affected children presented with low CIII activity in fibroblasts, lactic acidos

BACKGROUND: Nutritional deficiencies are a concern after any bariatric surgery procedure. Restriction of oral intake and/or decreased absorption may cause vitamin abnormalities. Prevention of these vitamin deficiencies includes both supplementation and routine measuring of serum values. An investigation was undertaken to examine preoperative and short-term (1-year) postoperative levels of vitamins/trace minerals in patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGBP).
METHODS: Serum preoperative and postoperative vitamin/trace element levels of LRYGBP patients were recorded in a

UNLABELLED: During the weaning period, solid foods are introduced in the diet to complement human milk or infant formula. Consequently, marginal deficiencies may easily develop because of inappropriate feeding and low bioavailability of nutrients. The objective of this study was to determine calcium, iron and zinc availability from weaning foods that contained a variety of ingredients but almost the same dietary fibre content, and to describe dietary factors that influence availability in a linear matter. Availability measurements from eight meals were made in vitro by a continuous-flow dialys

Micronutrient deficiencies have been found in obese individuals across age groups worldwide. While the effects of micronutrient deficiencies on human functions have been studied widely in different populations, there is limited information on how these micronutrient deficiencies affect obese populations. An examination of the available literature suggests associations exist between micronutrient deficiencies and obesity in different populations. These associations and possible mechanisms of the deficiencies' metabolic effects, such as their influence on leptin and insulin metabolism, are discu

Iron, folate, and vitamin B-12 status was found to be poor in a substantial proportion of outpatients with generally inactive Crohn's disease. Diet counseling was associated with a normalization of TIBC and serum folate over a 6-month period, but no other consistent benefits were noted despite moderate improvements in intake. The outpatients appeared to be at low risk of developing a zinc or copper deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Red cell microcytosis is a common abnormality detected in a full blood count, which often prompts clinicians to investigate further for a cause. In the absence of iron deficiency and anaemia of chronic disease, the differential diagnosis includes β-thalassaemia trait and α-thalassaemia trait.
METHODS: We investigated the contribution of α-thalassaemia trait in South African subjects with unexplained microcytosis. Iron studies, haemoglobin subfractionation and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis for α-globin gene deletions were performed on 97 controls and 86 patient

To estimate beta-thalassaemia carrier rate and to determine an accurate mass screening test, we tested 1000 randomly selected children aged 5-16 years from different geographical areas of Egypt. Microcytosis was present in 412 participants. The osmotic fragility test was positive in 81.1% of the 90 beta-thalassaemia carriers; in the indeterminate group (12 participants), the test was positive in 83.3%; in the 310 who were iron deficient, the test was positive in 63.9%. beta-thalassaemia carrier rate was > or = 9%. Serum iron, microcytosis, HbA2 level and transferrin saturation were accurate te

INTRODUCTION: Methemoglobinemia is a rare hematologic disorder of hemoglobin, in which iron contained within the heme moiety becomes oxidized from ferrous iron to ferric iron at a concentration greater than 1% in the blood. This biochemical change reduces binding affinity for oxygen, leading to impaired oxygen deposition in tissues and subsequent hypoxia and hypoxemia. The etiology of methemoglobinemia is often acquired from exposure to oxidizing agents, commonly antibiotics such as dapsone or local anesthetics such as benzocaine. A rare cause results from congenital deficiency of cytochrome b

Current intrinsic deficiencies in biomedicine promote the rapid development of alternative multitasking approaches. Recently, monometallic and alloy nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely studied for their potential biomedical applications. However, the research mainly focuses on monometallic compounds and metal oxide NPs that have already been studied. In this review, we investigate promising modified mono- and bimetallic NPs for improving the current state of materials science in medicine. It was contended that effective general biomedical applications can be enhanced by intelligent NP design.

Palestine refugees comprise the largest refugee population in the world, most of whom are encamped in Middle Eastern countries. In the Gaza Strip, where ∼1.4 million Palestinians reside, there are high prevalences of anemia and multiple micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs), including those of iron, zinc, vitamins A, B12, D, and E, ranging from 11.4% to 84.7% among pregnant women and 2.9% to 70.9% among preschool children. Dietary diversification and adequate food fortification are framed in policies but remain aspirational goals. Alternative, effective, targeted preventive approaches include, for

A cross-sectional study was carried out between October 2007 and January 2008 to investigate the prevalence and types of anaemia among pregnant women of eastern Sudan. Socio-demographic and obstetrical data were collected using a questionnaire. Haemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, serum folate and vitamin B(12) were assessed using standard laboratory methods. Two hundred and seventy-nine pregnant Sudanese women were recruited. Anaemia (Hb <11 gdl) and iron deficiency (ferritin <15 microg/l) were prevalent in 80.3 and 14.3% of the study sample, respectively. Of the total sample, 11.1% had iron-def

This review critically examines the relationship between nutritional status and malaria. The data indicate that protein-energy malnutrition is associated with greater malaria morbidity and mortality in humans. In addition, controlled trials of either vitamin A or zinc supplementation show that these nutrients can substantially reduce clinical malaria attacks. Data for iron indicate that supplementation may minimally aggravate certain malariometric indices in some settings and also strongly improve hematologic status. Withholding of iron supplements from deficient population is, therefore, not

Two 19-year-old men with sickle cell anemia and hypogonadism had hypothalamic dysfunction that responded to oral clomiphene therapy. The patients had no nutritional deficiencies or anatomic lesions known to result in the hypogonadism associated with sickle cell anemia. Their sickle cell disease was characterized by infrequent crises, severe hemolytic anemia, urinary iron loss, and iron deficiency. Partial hypothalamic hypogonadism was shown by low levels of testosterone, low to low-normal levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and a nearly normal rise in gonadotropin l

Hypertension is associated with an increased renal expression and activity of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) and iron deficiency. Distal tubules absorb iron, causing perturbations that may influence local responses. In this observational study, we investigated the relationship between iron content and ENaC expression and activity using two cell lines and hepcidin knockout mice (a murine model of iron overload). We found that iron did not transcriptionally regulate ENaC in hepcidin knockout mice or in vitro in collecting duct cells. However, the renal tubules of hepcidin knockout mice hav

Iron is an essential element in our daily diet. Most iron is required for the de novo synthesis of red blood cells, where it plays a critical role in oxygen binding to hemoglobin. Thus, iron deficiency causes anemia, a major public health burden worldwide. On the other extreme, iron accumulation in critical organs such as liver, heart, and pancreas causes organ dysfunction due to the generation of oxidative stress. Therefore, systemic iron levels must be tightly balanced. Here we focus on the regulatory role of the hepcidin/ferroportin circuitry as the major regulator of systemic iron homeosta

Earlier studies revealed that age-associated iron accumulation plays an important causal role in osteopenic development after estrogen deficiency. It is believed that an increase in iron content is associated with an increased likelihood of oxidative damage at the point of iron accumulation. However, there is no direct evidence that the iron accumulated in skeletal tissue causes free radical oxidative damage and consequent bone loss. Iron depletion from skeletal tissues of ovariectomized (OVX) rats was carried out with the oral chelator [1-N-docosyl-triethylenetetraminepentaacetic acid (DoTTPA

Hereditary hyperferritinemia and cataracts syndrome (HHCS) without iron overload is a syndrome first identified less than 3 decades ago. While investigators have dissected the gene where several responsible mutations reside, it remains a relatively unknown genetic disorder to clinicians. The result is often an expensive, invasive evaluation for iron overload, followed by a well-intended prescription for a series of phlebotomies that delivers morbidity instead of benefit. We present a father with an elevated ferritin and heterozygosity for H63D HFE mutation whose clinical course followed this p

Serum ferritin (SF) was determined by an immunoradiometric assay in a heterologous antibody system in 184 children of different ages with and without hematologic or biochemical signs of disturbed iron metabolism. SF levels as determined by this assay were higher than with a homologous antibody system, allowing a reliable discrimination of iron deficiency and overload. In normal children SF increased with age. In latent iron deficiency all SF values were below the normal range, if patients with signs of infections, elevated serum transaminases or parenteral iron therapy were excluded. In anemia

A 6-month-old full-term infant had severe anemia and neutropenia. The patient was being fed cow's milk and a diet of corn flour. Thorough investigation revealed low serum iron concentration, severe hypocupremia, low ceruloplasmin, retardation of bone age, and metaphysial irregularities and spurring. Bone marrow aspirate revealed cytoplasmic vacuolization in precursors of the erythroid and myeloid series and ringed sideroblasts. Therapy with oral iron, folic acid, and vitamin C was futile. Administration of copper sulfate resulted in brisk increase in neutrophils and reticulocytes. The child ma

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) causes neurodevelopmental disabilities, and gestational iron deficiency (ID) selectively worsens learning and neuroanatomical and growth impairments in PAE. It is unknown why ID worsens outcomes in alcohol-exposed offspring.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that PAE alters maternal-fetal iron distribution or its regulation.
METHODS: Nulliparous, 10-wk-old, Long-Evans rats were mated and then fed iron-sufficient (100 mg Fe/kg) or iron-deficient (≤4 mg Fe/kg) diets. On gestational days 13.5-19.5, dams received either 5.0 g ethanol/kg body weight (PAE) or i
