Use of platelet-rich fibrin versus connective tissue graft in treatment of gingival recessions: Literature review.

AIM: To compare and evaluate the effects of two different approaches on treating gingival recessions: coronally advanced flap (CAF) with platelet rich-fibrin (PRF) membrane and coronally advanced flap (CAF) with connective tissue graft (CTG). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed of randomized control trials in English identified in MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Cochrane Library), Springer Link, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases, published between 2015 and 2020. Studies had to be performed in vivo with follow-up period…

Suicide during COVID-19 and other major international respiratory outbreaks: A systematic review.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was recently declared a pandemic by the WHO. This outbreak threatens not only physical health but also has significant repercussions on mental health. In recent world history, major infectious outbreaks were associated with severe mental health sequelae, including suicide. In this study, we systematically review the literature on suicidal outcomes during major international respiratory outbreaks, including COVID-19. We reviewed descriptive and analytic articles addressing suicide during major international respiratory outbreaks. We searched PubMed, Medline, …

Polydactylous Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Nail Unit: A Structured Review of the Literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the nail unit (SCCNU) is a rare neoplastic condition that involves multiple digits (polydactylous SCCNU) in only 3.9% of cases. Here, we report a case of polydactylous SCCNU and perform a comprehensive review of MEDLINE and Embase to collate 44 cases of polydactylous SCCNU reported to date. Polydactylous patients were younger on average (48 to 61-63 years) and had a longer diagnostic delay (44 vs 35.1 months) compared with reported monodactylous cases. Human papillomavirus (HPV) positivity was observed in 49% of cases, and the most common serotypes noted were 16 (25.…

Astigmatism Management with Intraocular Lens Surgery.

Corneal astigmatism is common. More than 40% of patients undergoing cataract surgery have 1 diopter (D) power or more of astigmatism, which left untreated is visually significant. Because toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) are available, the current standard of care is to offer treatment of astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase databases, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched from inception to October 2019. Search words included astigmatism, corneal astigmatism, toric IOLs, alignment, and IOL calculation. Studies evaluated included review articles re…

The Protective Effects of the Autophagic and Lysosomal Machinery in Vascular and Valvular Calcification: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Autophagy is a highly conserved catabolic homeostatic process, crucial for cell survival. It has been shown that autophagy can modulate different cardiovascular pathologies, including vascular calcification (VCN). OBJECTIVE: To assess how modulation of autophagy, either through induction or inhibition, affects vascular and valvular calcification and to determine the therapeutic applicability of inducing autophagy. DATA SOURCES: A systematic review of English language articles using MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science (WoS) and the Cochrane library. The search terms included autophagy,…

Hypofunctional connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and ventromedial prefrontal cortex in autism: Evidence from coordinate-based imaging meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Underconnectivity in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) may be associated with a weakened ability to interpret social signals in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and result in cognitive inflexibility - a hallmark feature of ASD. However, previous neuroimaging studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in ASD reported inconsistent findings on functional connectivity of the PCC. This study investigated the aberrant resting-state functional connectivity of the PCC in ASD using multilevel kernel density analysis. METHODS: Online databases (MEDLINE/PubMed) were s…

Acute Kidney Injury in Septic Patients Treated by Selected Nephrotoxic Antibiotic Agents-Pathophysiology and Biomarkers-A Review.

Acute kidney injury is a common complication in critically ill patients with sepsis and/or septic shock. Further, some essential antimicrobial treatment drugs are themselves nephrotoxic. For this reason, timely diagnosis and adequate therapeutic management are paramount. Of potential acute kidney injury (AKI) biomarkers, non-protein-coding RNAs are a subject of ongoing research. This review covers the pathophysiology of vancomycin and gentamicin nephrotoxicity in particular, septic AKI and the microRNAs involved in the pathophysiology of both syndromes. PubMED, UptoDate, MEDLINE and Cochrane d…

Scores for preoperative risk evaluation of postoperative mortality.

Preoperative risk evaluation scores are used prior to surgery to predict perioperative risks. They are also a useful tool to help clinicians communicate the risk-benefit balance of the procedure to patients. This review identifies and assesses the existing preoperative risk evaluation scores (also called prediction scores) of postoperative mortality in all types of surgery (emergency or scheduled) in an adult population. We systematically identified studies using the MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE and Cochrane databases and published studies reporting the development and validation of preoperative predi…

Impact of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) supplementation on testosterone concentrations and BMI in elderly women: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that numerous clinical studies have evaluated the positive effects of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) supplementation on testosterone concentrations and on the body mass index (BMI), more evidence is needed to certify that DHEA is a BMI-reducing agent in the elderly. This meta-analysis aims to clarify the various incompatible results and investigate the impact of DHEA supplementation on serum testosterone levels and lean body mass in elderly women. METHODS: Four scientific databases (EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science) were searched from inception unt…

Safety considerations when using non-ergot dopamine agonists to treat Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Nonergot dopamine agonists (NEDA) represent an excellent treatment option for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, in both early and advanced stages of the disease. The post-marketing phase of NEDA has highlighted, though, the occurrence of important long-term adverse events. AREAS COVERED: This review reports recent updates on NEDA adverse events, analyzing neurobiological bases and risk factors of these complications. A literature search has been performed using Medline and reviewing the bibliographies of selected articles. EXPERT OPINION: NEDA represents a very important optio…

Patent ductus arteriosus and oxidative stress in preterm infants: a narrative review.

The role of oxygen, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and isoprostanes (IsoPs) in regulating patency and closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) have been studied in preterm infants. Also the possible correlation between a hemodynamically significant PDA and its pharmacological treatment with oxidative stress has been investigated. The National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE) database was searched without time limits. Available data demonstrate that free radicals are not always harmful and that ROS and IsoPs play a relevant role in DA closure. On the other hand, a hemodynamically significant PDA …
