Histological analysis and electron microscopy of 12 benign pheochromocytomas and 9 malignant pheochromoblastomas showed that there are no reliable histological differences between cells of benign and malignant tumor of the adrenal medulla. The ratio of ultrastructurally differentiated and undifferentiated cells in the tumor can reflect their maturity; the more ultrastructurally undifferentiated and less differentiated cells in the tumor, the higher is the malignant potential of this tumor.

We describe a case of plexiform schwannoma, a benign tumour of the peripheral nerve sheath, arising in the labia of a 5-year-old girl who presented with a mass in the vulva. Light and electron microscopy, special stains and immunohistochemistry studies were done on the excised specimen. A Medline search revealed a single case of vulvar plexiform schwannoma which was reported in 1983.

Two unusual uveal tumors occurring in eyes enucleated for presumed malignant melanoma are discussed. One was a leiomyoma of the ciliary body, affecting a 22-year-old female, the other a hemangiopericytoma of the choroid in an 84-year-old male patient. The latter case is the fourth intraocular hemangiopericytoma reported in the literature to date. The histopathologic diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.

A patient with chronic disseminated histoplasmosis was followed after successful treatment with amphotericin B for 10 years until his death from chronic obstructive airways disease. Necropsy showed that Histoplasma organisms could still be identified in the adrenal and pancreatic abscesses, though none appeared viable on electron microscopy. Excision of such abscesses should be considered in view of their potential as a reservoir of organisms.

Intercellular junctions between neighbouring pinealocytes, glial cells, glial cells and pinealocytes as well as between nerve endings and parenchymal cells of the pineal gland of Wistar rats were investigated on freeze-fracture replicas and thin sections by transmission electron microscopy. Gap junctions, tight junctions and the annular gap junctions have been revealed. In addition, chemical synapses between nerve endings and pinealocytes have been observed.

The surface morphologies of different generic types of Foley catheter have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characteristic features of each material are illustrated and it is shown that distinct differences exist between the inner and outer surfaces of latex-based catheters; these differences are attributed to the methods of manufacture. The possible relations between morphology and performance in situ are discussed.

Two unrelated families are presented in both of which a child with generalized epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (congenital bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma) had a parent with linear epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (epidermolytic epidermal naevus). Light and electron microscopy of skin biopsies of lesions from the children and parents showed typical epidermolytic hyperkeratosis. Gonadal mosaicism in patients with linear epidermolytic hyperkeratosis may be responsible for transmission of the abnormality to the offspring.

On the basis of the clinical appearance and the light microscopic findings, we determined 16 biopsy specimens to be possible examples of oral hairy leukoplakia. All 16 specimens were studied by means of electron microscopy. Ten of these specimens contained typical herpes-type viral particles in the epithelial cells of the upper stratum spinosum. None of the specimens contained ultrastructural evidence of human papillomaviruses.

A report is given on a premature stillborn with severe congenital spinal muscular atrophy, arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and hydrops fetalis. During delivery the head was spontaneously pulled off. The neuromuscular disease was the cause of this unusual complication. No alterations of collagenous fibres were found by light and electron microscopy in dermis, aorta or in the Achilles tendon. The hydrops fetalis was not of immunological nature.

Pieces of dentin were implanted into five different connective tissues in rats and examined with scanning electron microscopy after observation periods of up to 2 weeks. Dentin-oclast-like cells, apparently involved in resorption of the implants, were only seen associated with periosteum and periodontal membrane. These findings indicate that the resorbing potential of connective tissues is related to their ability to induce bone formation.

Fifteen biopsies from contact allergic reactions in sensitized patients were taken at different time intervals after application of simple chemicals. Two different procedures for electron microscopy were done. No signs of damage were ever seen in Langerhans cells. The authors are therefore of the opinion that there is still no proof for a target role of Langerhans cells in contact allergic reactions in humans.

Antibody levels produced in humans in the course of hepatitis A were compared with those in Coxsackie B2 infection and vaccination with live poliovaccine (type 1) using the method of immune-electron microscopy. It has been shown that the levels of antibody in hepatitis A were 25 to 800-times higher than in Coxsackie B2 infection and than after vaccination with the live poliovaccine.

A case of progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) in association with peripheral neuropathy and other neural and visceral manifestations is reported. Pathological studies of the sural nerve demonstrated loss of large myelinated fibers, segmental demyelination with remyelination, and excess of zebra bodies in the Schwann cells on electron microscopy. Peripheral neuropathy in the course of PEO is regarded as a further although rare aspect of a multisystem disease.

There is no evidence of ultrastructural damage as assessed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy on the exposure of group A and AB human platelets to the appropriate anti-A and anti-AB alloantibody and complement. There was also no evidence of platelet aggregation under the above circumstances. These in vitro findings support the view that an ABO mismatch is not an absolute contraindication to platelet transfusion.

We describe a patient with bowel lipofuscinosis developing subsequent to Crohn's disease of five-years' duration. Lipofuscin pigment was demonstrated in the perinuclear region of smooth muscle cells with the longitudinal and circular coats of the ileal muscularis propria but not in the muscularis mucosa. Electron microscopy showed lipofuscin pigment forming within degenerating mitochondria, confirming the "brown bowel" syndrome as a smooth muscle mitochondrial myopathy.

Examination of 20 patients who had fiber implantation for the treatment of pattern baldness showed that nearly all the fibers had fallen out by ten weeks. Complications observed were facial swelling, infection, foreign-body granulomas, scarring, and permanent hair loss. Scanning electron microscopy identified the fibers as modacrylic fibers. The complications, high monetary cost, and ultimate futility of fiber implantation make it an unacceptable procedure.

During an endemic appearance of chancroids (26 cases) in Berlin (West) coccobacilli were disclosed in biopsies by electron microscopy. The bacteria were aggregated predominantly in groups in the extracellular space. Their cell wall is approximately 120 A thick and trilaminar as in Gram-negative bacteria. Concerning the cell wall structure and the cytoplasmic composition, the detected coccobacilli are identical to culturally grown Haemophilus ducreyi obtained from chancroids.

A well-differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the subglottis of a 77-year-old man was studied by light and electron microscopy. The tumor consisted of mucous cells, epidermoid cells, and intermediate cells of both differentiation. Mucous cells formed glands and cystic spaces filled with mucin. Abundant tonofibrils in aggregates were observed in tumor cell cytoplasms when they were differentiated into epidermoid cells. Epidermoid cells varied in differentiation.

A case of vitamin D resistant hypophosphataemic osteomalacia with glycosuria and aminoaciduria is reported. The course of the disease was dramatically altered by the removal of a bone sarcoma which probably had been growing slowly since the onset of the patient's symptoms five years previously. The histology and electron microscopy of the tumour are described. Three years after the operation the patient remains free of symptoms.

Five biopsies from three patients with localized myxedema were studied by electron microscopy. The dermis showed an overwhelming accumulation of microfibrils with knobs (acid glycosaminoglycans) and an amorphous material containing glycoprotein. Furthermore, evidence of degradation without new formation of collagen fibrils was found. Considerable numbers of mast cells with various types of granules, fibroblasts with dilated granular endoplasmic reticulum, and macrophages were seen in the mucinous areas.
