Antegrade Elastic Intramedullary Nailing Insertion Technique Results in Higher Incidence of Symptomatic Implants in Pediatric Ulnar Fractures.

UNLABELLED: Retrograde and antegrade nailing techniques are the two options available to a surgeon when using elastic stable intramedullary nailing; however, the literature comparing these two nailing techniques is scarce. Thus, we conducted a retrospective review of all pediatric and adolescent ulnar fractures treated with elastic stable intramedullary nailing at our facility. We hypothesize that the clinical outcomes (implant and wound complications) and the time between surgery and radiographic union will be similar for both techniques. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of pediatric ul

Late Medial Migration of Lag Screw After Gamma3 Nailing Threatening the Internal Iliac Vessels: A Case Report.

CASE: A 77-year-old woman underwent Gamma3 Nail (Stryker) for an extracapsular fracture of the neck of femur on the left side. Eight months later, the lag screw had migrated medially into the pelvis and was in contact with the internal iliac vessels. After a multidisciplinary team meeting, embolization of the internal iliac artery was carried out prophylactically before the removal of screw and conversion to a total hip replacement. CONCLUSION: Although there are increasing number of case reports on late medial migration of lag screw, medial migration into pelvis with vascular complication is

Tibia Fracture in Staged Limb Salvage Using External Ring Fixation and Intramedullary Nailing: A Report of Two Cases.

Limb salvage for Charcot's neuroarthropathy has been shown to have high complication and failure rates. The aim of our report of two cases it to present a unique complication encountered with staged limb salvage for Charcot's neuroarthropathy. In two cases, patients developed delayed tibial shaft fracture associated with previous wire placement despite insertion of locked intramedullary nail fixation that spanned the delayed fracture. Both patients experienced fractures following advancement of weight after definitive fixation. In both patients, there was noted complication with the sites of t

Intramedullary Nailing Versus External Fixation in the Treatment of Open Tibial Fractures in Tanzania: Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Open tibial fractures are common injuries in low and middle-income countries, but there is no consensus regarding treatment with intramedullary nailing versus external fixation. The purpose of the present study was to compare the outcomes of initial treatment with intramedullary nailing or external fixation in adults with open tibial fractures. METHODS: We conducted a randomized clinical trial (RCT) at a tertiary orthopaedic center in Tanzania. Adults with acute diaphyseal open tibial fractures were randomly assigned to statically locked, hand-reamed intramedullary nailing or unip

A review of acrylates: Super glue, nail adhesives, and diabetic pump adhesives increasing sensitization risk in women and children.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a cutaneous type IV hypersensitivity immune reaction mounted against substances in contact with the skin to which the patient has been sensitized. ACD is common, affecting approximately 72 million Americans per year, and is more common in women. One common contact allergen group is acrylates, which are monomers that are polymerized in the making of glues, adhesives, and plastic materials. It is the monomers that are sensitizing, whereas the final polymers are inert. Acrylates were the 2012 Contact Allergen of the Year with the specific acrylate, isobornyl a

Pseudoaneurysm of the internal iliac artery caused by proximal femoral nail antirotation following intertrochanteric fracture: a case report.

Pseudoaneurysm of the internal iliac artery is a very rare complication of intertrochanteric fracture. Here, the case of an 88-year-old female patient, who presented with intense pain following surgery for intertrochanteric fracture of the femur, is reported. Radiography revealed intertrochanteric fracture of the left femur fixed by proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA). The PFNA was found to have disassembled, and the screw had penetrated through the acetabulum. As computed tomography (CT) revealed a haematoma behind the acetabulum, CT angiography was immediately performed. A pseudoaneury
