MABAL: a Novel Deep-Learning Architecture for Machine-Assisted Bone Age Labeling.

Bone age assessment (BAA) is a commonly performed diagnostic study in pediatric radiology to assess skeletal maturity. The most commonly utilized method for assessment of BAA is the Greulich and Pyle method (Pediatr Radiol 46.9:1269-1274, 2016; Arch Dis Child 81.2:172-173, 1999) atlas. The evaluation of BAA can be a tedious and time-consuming process for the radiologist. As such, several computer-assisted detection/diagnosis (CAD) methods have been proposed for automation of BAA. Classical CAD tools have traditionally relied on hard-coded algorithmic features for BAA which suffer from a variet

Twisting van der Waals Heterostructures Enables Thermographic In-Sensor Computing and Logics.

In-sensor computing and logics are the core for advancing machine vision technology, but face challenges in extending such capability into thermal form. Here, a bioinspired thermoreceptor array based on twisted graphene and titanium diselenide (TiSe2) heterostructures is presented. The electron-phonon interaction between graphene and few-layer TiSe2 exhibits strong twist-angle (θ) dependence, as evidenced by varied phonon-induced gap of graphene (114 ± 13 meV for θ = 1° and 67 ± 6 meV for θ = 7°), enabling sensitive thermal reception at temperature range from 20 to 350 K. Integrating such hete

Physics-informed adjoint neural network for parametric PDE-constrained optimal control problems.

Many engineering applications involve solving parametric optimal control problems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). Conventional numerical approaches suffer from high computational costs in multi-parameter scenarios, as they require solving the PDE system repeatedly for each parameter configuration, and remeshing may be also needed if domains vary with parameters. While deep learning offers a promising alternative by handling multiple parameters simultaneously, existing neural networks (NNs) still face challenges in accuracy and computational complexity. We propose two novel p

Abnormal neural network connectivity in heart failure with reduced and mild-ranged ejection fraction patients: an independent component and dynamic functional network connectivity analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) is frequently accompanied by cognitive and affective impairments, yet the neural mechanisms underlying these comorbidities remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate alterations in static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) within large-scale brain networks in patients with reduced (HFrEF) and mid-range (HFmrEF) ejection fraction. METHODS: Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to identify resting-state networks (RSNs) and FC disparities between HF patients and healthy controls (HCs) within the RSNs. The ICA, sliding window a

Effects of 12-week escitalopram treatment on resting-state functional connectivity of large-scale brain networks in major depressive disorder.

In this study, the effects of antidepressants on large-scale brain networks and the neural basis of individual differences in response were explored. A total of 41 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 42 matched healthy controls (HCs) were scanned by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging separately at baseline and after a 12-week follow-up. The patients with MDD received escitalopram for 12 weeks. After treatment, patients were classified into those with MDD in remission [MDDr, endpoint 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) total score ≤7] and those in nonr

Neuronal regeneration in a zebrafish model of adult brain injury.

Neural stem cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the adult mammalian forebrain are a potential source of neurons for neural tissue repair after brain insults such as ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent studies show that neurogenesis in the ventricular zone (VZ) of the adult zebrafish telencephalon has features in common with neurogenesis in the adult mammalian SVZ. Here, we established a zebrafish model to study injury-induced neurogenesis in the adult brain. We show that the adult zebrafish brain possesses a remarkable capacity for neuronal regeneration. Linking Attentional Modulation to Auditory Attention Decoding: Using Colocated Stimuli With a Fixed Temporal Structure.

Neural representations of task-relevant sounds are emphasized when they are attended to, compared with when they are ignored. Classic markers of this modulation, such as amplitude change of event-related potentials (ERPs) and attentional modulation indices (AMIs) derived from envelope-tracking analyses, provide robust quantitative measures of top-down attentional strength. However, it remains unclear how well modern auditory attention decoding (AAD) algorithms applied to short electroencephalography (EEG) segments reflect these established neural signatures. Here, we used a two-stream, colocate

HCD-SCL Net: Hierarchical Category Decoupling and Structural Continual Learning for Object Detection in Remote Sensing Images.

Deep learning has been used for object detection in remote sensing images successfully. However, how to detect objects precisely and efficiently with proper architecture complexity is an important issue when there are limited computing resources. Furthermore, current object detection neural networks are usually static and cannot perform differentiated training on samples of varying difficulty. In this article, we propose a method combining hierarchical category decoupling (HCD) and structural continual learning (SCL), named HCD and SCL network (HCD-SCL Net), for object detection in remote sens

Developmental Neurotoxicity of Alcohol from Neuronal Basis to Behavioural Outcomes: A Comprehensive Review.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is recognized as a major public health concern due to its profound and lasting effects on the central nervous system (CNS) and its ability to induce fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which encompass a wide range of cognitive, behavioural, and neuropsychiatric disorders that persist throughout life. Experimental and clinical studies have identified several mechanisms underlying ethanol impairing brain development, including apoptosis, oxidative stress, disruption of morphogen and growth factor signalling pathways, impaired neuronal proliferation and migrat

Ketamine Alters Tuning of Neural and Behavioral Spatial Working Memory Precision.

BACKGROUND: Working memory (WM) is a key element of cognition that depends on accurate internal representation of stimuli and often impaired in psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Prior human neuropharmacological studies with ketamine suggest that glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are critical for spatial WM (sWM), with NMDAR antagonism attenuating task-evoked neural activation and reducing WM accuracy. Animal studies, at the cellular level, and cortical microcircuit models hypothesize that NMDAR antagonism impairs sWM by decreasing the specificity of neuronal respo

Emergence of symmetry selectivity in the visual areas of the human brain: fMRI responses to symmetry presented in both frontoparallel and slanted planes.

Symmetry is effortlessly perceived by humans across changes in viewing geometry. Here, we re-examined the network subserving symmetry processing in the context of up-to-date retinotopic definitions of visual areas. Responses in object selective cortex, as defined by functional localizers, were also examined. We further examined responses to both frontoparallel and slanted symmetry while manipulating attention both toward and away from symmetry. Symmetry-specific responses first emerge in V3 and continue across all downstream areas examined. Of the retinotopic areas, ventral occipital VO1 showe

Hybrid Feature Selection-Based Machine Learning and Deep Learning Framework for Biomarker Prediction From RNA-seq Data During Dengue Fever to Severe Dengue Progression.

BACKGROUND: Severe dengue (SD) represents a life-threatening progression of dengue virus infection. Early identification of patients at risk of transitioning from dengue fever (DF) to SD remains a major clinical challenge. Unraveling the transcriptomic changes underlying this progression may aid in developing timely therapeutic interventions. METHODS: RNA-seq datasets comprising 103 samples (62 SD and 41 DF) were retrieved from the GEO repository. Following normalization using DESeq2, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between the 2 disease stages. Functional enrichment ana

Improving fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy phasor accuracy using convolutional neural networks.

Introduction: Although a powerful biological imaging technique, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) faces challenges such as a slow acquisition rate, a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and high cost and complexity. To address the fundamental problem of low SNR in FLIM images, we demonstrate how to use pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to reduce noise in FLIM measurements. Methods: Our approach uses pre-learned models that have been previously validated on large datasets with different distributions than the training datasets, such as sample structures, noise distribu

INSIDEnet: Interpretable NonexpanSIve Data-Efficient network for denoising in grating interferometry breast CT.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Unfortunately, current breast imaging techniques all suffer from certain limitations: they are either not fully three dimensional, have an insufficient resolution or low soft-tissue contrast. Grating interferometry breast computed tomography (GI-BCT) is a promising X-ray phase contrast modality that could overcome these limitations by offering high soft-tissue contrast and excellent three-dimensional resolution. To enable the transition of this technology to clinical practice, dedicated data-processing algorithms must be developed

Neural sampling of the speech signal at different timescales by children with dyslexia.

Phonological difficulties characterize individuals with dyslexia across languages. Currently debated is whether these difficulties arise from atypical neural sampling of (or entrainment to) auditory information in speech at slow rates (<10 Hz, related to speech rhythm), faster rates, or neither. MEG studies with adults suggest that atypical sampling in dyslexia affects faster modulations in the neurophysiological gamma band, related to phoneme-level representation. However, dyslexic adults have had years of reduced experience in converting graphemes to phonemes, which could itself cause atypic

Deciphering the Formulation-Dependent Neurotoxicity of Irinotecan: An Integrated Pharmacovigilance and Mechanistic Study.

Irinotecan is a key chemotherapeutic agent, but its neurotoxicity limits its utility. Observed differences in neurotoxicity between conventional and liposomal formulations are poorly characterized mechanistically. This study aimed to systematically compare their neurotoxicity profiles and investigate the underlying mechanisms, testing the hypothesis that the parent drug irinotecan contributes directly to neurotoxicity. We employed a multi-dimensional strategy. Computational toxicology predicted neurotoxicity for irinotecan and its metabolite SN-38. Disproportionality analysis of the FDA Advers

Deep learning ultrasonic computed tomography for non-destructive testing of workpieces.

Traditional ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques face dual challenges in industrial applications: imaging accuracy and imaging speed. The application of ultrasonic computed tomography (USCT) in the medical field provides a new approach for industrial NDT. Although this technique improves inversion accuracy, the intensive computation required for inversion limits its potential for online applications in industrial testing. To address these issues, this paper proposes a hardware system for ultrasonic tomography and a neural network inversion method integrating attention mechanisms

Dynamic convolutional neural networks for altitude aware UAV object detection.

Object detection in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is inherently challenging due to the wide variation in altitudes and viewpoints, coupled with the limited computational resources of onboard embedded systems. Traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), while accurate, are often over-parameterized and inefficient for real-time UAV deployment due to their high computational and memory demands. Designed for all types of inputs, they perform redundant operations that strain the limited processing power, memory, and energy resources available on UAV platforms. This work addresses these limi
