Reliability of retrograde atrial activation patterns during ventricular pacing for localizing accessory pathways.

Definitive localization of accessory pathways is based on atrial activation patterns during orthodromic supraventricular tachycardia when retrograde conduction occurs exclusively through the accessory pathway. In some patients, supraventricular tachycardia cannot be induced or is deleterious. To determine whether accessory pathway sites can be identified accurately during ventricular pacing, retrograde atrial activation was assessed during orthodromic supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular pacing at multiple cycle lengths in 41 patients with a single accessory pathway. To obviate retrogr

Amphibian terminal nerve: distribution revealed by LHRH and AChE markers.

Immunocytochemical and histochemical studies in the tiger salamander and bullfrog demonstrated the presence of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone-like immunoreactive (LHRH-ir) material and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the terminal nerve (TN). Immunoreactive perikarya and processes were found within the olfactory, vomeronasal and trigeminal nerves and in the nasal epithelium. Central TN projections consisted of fibers terminating in the olfactory bulb and bundles that projected to another group of LHRH-ir perikarya in the preoptic region. Up to 4 weeks following hypophysectomy, the labelin

The location of descending fibres to sympathetic neurons supplying the eye and sudomotor neurons supplying the head and neck.

Evidence is given of the location in man of the fibres going to the sympathetic neurons of the lateral horn that supply the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the eye and the sweat glands of the head and neck. For the region of the pons and medulla, the evidence is abstracted from the literature. For the cervical spinal cord, the evidence is from our cases of anterolateral cordotomy. In the medulla, thrombosis of the artery of the fossette latérale destroys the fibres; this locates the fibres in the posterolateral retro-olivary area. But not all fibres to the sudomotor neurons lie there: some

Somatosensory evoked potentials in syringomyelia.

The two types of upper limb somatosensory evoked potential abnormality observed in nine patients with syringomyelia were reduced amplitude or absent cervical potentials and an abnormal central conduction time. Although this pattern of abnormalities resembles that observed in other intrinsic spinal cord lesions, it differs from peripheral nerve diseases and cervical radiculopathy in which the central conduction time is normal.

Cerebral mapping of apraxia in Alzheimer's disease by positron emission tomography.

The ability to mimic skilled movements or to pantomime them in response to spoken command was compared with psychometric performance and with regional glucose utilization as estimated by [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in 17 right-handed patients with Alzheimer's disease and 6 age-matched normal subjects. Apraxia scores, both on tests to command and to imitation, were significantly lower in the Alzheimer patients. Imitation scores correlated best with performance on tests of visual--spatial ability and with cortical metabolism in the right parietal lobe; command scores rel

Cholinergic limbic projections and behavioral role of basal forebrain nuclei in the rat.

The purposes of the present study were to identify cholinergic non-neocortical projections of the basal forebrain and to determine the role … dosis exhibited by these females. The dissociation of rejection and lordosis suggests that distinct neural pathways mediate the occurrence of these reproductive behaviors and that rejection behavior may be regulated by basal forebrain pathways.

Organization within the cranial IX-X complex in ranid frogs: a horseradish peroxidase transport study.

Cranial nerves IX and X in frogs have been described as originating from a nuclear group referred to as the IX-X complex. We studied the central nervous system components of this complex in Rana pipiens and R. catesbiana by labeling peripheral branches of cranial nerves IX and X and identifying the central nervous system contributions of these branches. Various peripheral nerves (IX and the cardiac, gastric, pulmonary, and laryngeal branches of X) were identified and soaked in horseradish peroxidase (HRP). One to 2 weeks later, the frogs were killed and processed for HRP by the tetramethylbenz

Control of gastroduodenal coordination: dopaminergic and cholinergic pathways.

The efficacies of the gastrokinetic drugs domperidone, cisapride , metoclopramide and bethanechol to improve antroduodenal coordination were compared in two test systems: in vitro, the gastroduodenal preparation of the guinea-pig; in vivo, the conscious dog implanted with strain gauges on antrum and duodenum. Antroduodenal coordination could be quantified for both the in vitro and in vivo systems. Drug effects were similar for both test models. Domperidone and cisapride , and to a lesser extent metoclopramide but not bethanechol, effectively improved antroduodenal coordination indicating that

Inhibition and excitation of thoracic spinoreticular neurons by electrical stimulation of vagal afferent nerves.

Neurons in spinal segments T1-T3 of cats projecting to the region of the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis were tested for their responses to electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve. The effects of vagal efferent activity were blocked with methylatropine, thereby limiting vagal input to the effects of afferent fibers. Seventeen spinoreticular (SR) neurons were inhibited by vagal stimulation; one was excited; four were both inhibited and excited, and nine were unaffected. Half of the SR neurons were not spontaneously active; they were excited by somatic stimuli for 20- to 30-s periods in

Agoraphobia, compulsive behaviours and behaviour completion mechanisms.

Anxiety is identified with a state of high arousal. Agoraphobia is differentiated from specific phobias which are inherent responses to situations which threatened primitive man. In agoraphobia, attacks of high arousal are produced by situations which delay ongoing activity. It is hypothesised that such delays produce arousal by activating behaviour completion mechanisms. Evidence is reviewed which indicates desensitization has a lasting effect in agoraphobia but not in specific phobias. It is suggested that desensitization reduces the arousal produced by behaviour completion mechanisms. Avers

Localization of the anterior hypothalamic angiotensin II pressor system.

Previous studies by this laboratory have shown that an electrolytic lesion of tissue surrounding the anteroventral third cerebral ventricle (AV3V) produces pressor deficits to both intravenously (i.v.) and intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) administered angiotensin II (AII). These studies were designed to identify the neural substrates critical to the central AII pressor response. The AII pressor system was mapped employing a spectrum of overlapping electrolytic lesions within the medial preoptic-anterior hypothalamic area. The effect of each lesion on the pressor response to AII (i.c.v.) was

Spino-vagal nonadrenergic inhibition of gastric motility elicited by abdominal nociceptive stimulation in the cat.

Reflex inhibition of gastric motility in response to intestinal nociception and afferent nerve stimulation was studied in anesthetized cats. Mechanical stimulation of the small and large intestines elicited marked gastric inhibition, which was imitated by direct electrical stimulation of mesenteric or splanchnic afferents. The reflex response was resistant to atropine, guanethidine, and adrenalectomy. Spinal cord transection at the cervical level or spinal anesthesia completely blocked the reflex, as did vagotomy or vagal cold blockade. Chemical peritoneal stimulation by hydrochloric acid indu

Evoked potentials in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Nerve conduction, EEG, visual evoked potentials, electroretinograms and somatosensory evoked potentials were investigated in 3 children with the Bielschowsky-Jansky-type and in 1 child diagnosed as Spielmeyer-Vogt-type of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. Electroretinographic responses were abolished in all of them. Electroencephalograms showed high amplitude, irregular delta-theta activity and spike- or polyspike-wave discharges without localized preponderance. As a characteristic feature for the Bielschowsky-Jansky type grossly enlarged evoked responses to single light flashes were recorded. S

Identification of Novel Interacting Proteins of FUZ and GPR161.

Protein-protein interactions are central to the dynamic regulation of signaling pathways and provide critical insight into the cellular mechanisms underlying human disease. Our previous study demonstrated biochemical and genetic interactions between FUZ and GPR161 in sonic hedgehog signaling during spinal neural tube development. In this study, we sought to identify novel interacting proteins of FUZ and GPR161 to further characterize their biochemical and functional relationships. Using affinity-based liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry of immunoprecipitated complexes from cells ove
