RATIONALE: Cefotaxime is a widely used 3rd-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is primarily excreted through urine. Third-generation cephalosporins (e.g., ceftazidime, ceftriaxone) and the 4th-generation cefepime are associated with neurological complications. Although cephalosporin-associated encephalopathy (CAE) is well-documented, cases specifically induced by cefotaxime remain remarkably rare. To our knowledge, this is the 1st documented case of cefotaxime-induced CAE in a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

Peritoneal tuberculosis should be considered in young patients presenting with non-specific abdominal pain, constitutional symptoms and ascites. Here, we describe a case of a 29-year-old woman with pelvic pain, abdominal distension and weight loss. She presented with a distended, painful abdomen, and painful mobilization of the uterus and adnexa. Imaging revealed multiloculated adnexal formations, ascites and peritoneal thickening. A diagnostic laparoscopy was performed, with findings suggestive of peritoneal carcinomatosis, but the biopsies were compatible with granulomatous peritonitis. The …

Background/Objective: Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most lethal gynecological cancers, having a worldwide mortality rate of 66% in 2020. The overall 5-year relative survival rate is only 21% for distant stages, due to the lack of early diagnosis. Epithelial OC, the most common high-grade serous carcinoma, carries p53 mutations in most cases. However, we found that the immediate early response 5 gene (IER5), a p53 target gene, is overexpressed in ovarian cancer cells. The molecular mechanism underlying the role of IER5 in OC has not been well studied. We previously reported that IER5 promot

BACKGROUND Ascites is a common clinical sign noted in 3% to 4% of hospitalized medical patients. Nearly 94% of patients with ascites have non-malignant etiologies, with the most common being chronic liver disease. Peritoneal mesothelioma is an exceedingly rare malignancy associated with asbestos exposure. Here, we report the case of an elderly man who presented with recurrent loculated ascites and received a diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma after a delay of approximately 10 weeks. CASE REPORT A 67-year-old man with a history of asbestos exposure presented with abdominal distension and musc

INTRODUCTION: In the tumor microenvironment, macrophages function as M1 macrophages, which cause cytotoxicity to tumor cells in the early stages, and M2 macrophages, which contribute to the proliferation of cancer cells in the late stages. This study aimed to examine the mechanism of action of macrophages in ascites using a peritoneal dissemination mouse model of colorectal cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mouse models of peritoneal dissemination were created by injecting murine colorectal cancer cells into the abdominal cavity of non-obese diabetic/severely combined immunodeficient mice. Surfa

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of Sarcopenia varies between 1.5% and 68% among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This wide range is due to the different diagnostic tools and the cut-off points used. Early diagnosis and intervention of sarcopenia are essential because of its association with poorer quality of life (QoL), higher hospitalization rates, and adverse events. The "European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2)" consensus review suggests ultrasound as an emerging tool to quantify muscle mass. Our objective is to describe the prevalence of sarcopenia risk in perit

Disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (DPL) is a rare and benign condition characterized by the progression of smooth muscle tumors across the peritoneal cavity. The etiology is not well understood and could include previous surgeries and hormonal stimulation. We report on a 39-year-old woman with extensive DPL at the end of her pregnancy. She was diagnosed in the context of amenorrhea and was initially treated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. During pregnancy, a significant increase in lesion size was observed. The day before the planned cesarean-section (C-section), she pre

During post chemotherapy surgery for ovarian cancer, it is important to ensure that any residual disease is carefully assessed and removed. The assessment remains subjective, despite clear evidence of the benefits of complete macroscopic resection. In this work, we have considered Raman spectroscopy as a possible tool for residual disease assessment by exploring its ability to correctly classify ovarian cancer from benign and borderline tissues. Samples from seventy-three participants were analysed (n = 20 benign, n = 11 borderline and n = 42 cancer) using a multivariate analysis model. All mo

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), characterized by the dissemination of metastatic tumor cells throughout the peritoneal cavity from several gastrointestinal and gynecological malignancies, has significantly compromised patient survival. The standard of care is cytoreductive surgery with or without intraperitoneal chemotherapy. However, surgical resection often leaves behind microscopic or clinically occult disease due to the complex anatomy of the peritoneum, where intraperitoneal chemotherapy and systemic chemotherapy have shown limited success. To improve the therapeutic outcome, targeted the

In acute kidney injury, no dialytic method has been shown to be superior in terms of mortality or recovery of kidney function. Peritoneal dialysis is an excellent treatment option, since it is continuous and can be adapted to clinical needs, it offers hemodynamic stability, adequate solute clearance, correction of electrolyte and acidosis disorders, appropriate ultrafiltration in volume overload, it is cheaper, does not require anticoagulation, provides calories, can be performed at the patient's bedside, its prescription is simple and does not require such sophisticated machinery. And when co

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to characterize disturbances in vaginal microbiota among patients with squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) or cervical cancer (CC), and to identify specific bacterial genera with potential as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. We also explored microbiota of peritoneal fluid in CC patients across different pathological subtypes.
METHODS: A total of 76 participants were enrolled, including 44 SIL and 32 CC patients, further classified into four groups: low-grade SIL (LSIL; n = 14), high-grade SIL (HSIL; n = 30), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC; n = 18) and adenoca

INTRODUCTION: Pheochromocytomatosis, defined as the implantation of pheochromocytoma cells to the intraoperatively opened surfaces during surgical manipulation, is an infrequent complication of surgical intervention of pheochromocytomas. Only a handful of pheochromocytomatosis cases have been reported since the first case was described in 2001.

PURPOSE: Despite advances in systemic therapy, outcomes of patients with gastric cancer (GC) peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) remain poor, in part because of poor penetrance of systemic therapy into peritoneal metastasis due to the plasma-peritoneal barrier and anarchic intra-tumoral circulation. Hence, regional treatment approach with administration of chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity (intraperitoneal, IP) under various conditions, combined with or without cytoreductive surgery (CRS) has remained an area of significant research interest. The purpose of this review is to provide

BACKGROUND: The presence of peritoneal metastases (PMs) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) confers a poor prognosis and only a minority of patients will benefit from the available treatment options. In primary CRC tumors, it is well established that a high infiltration of CD8+ effector T cells correlates to a favorable patient outcome. In contrast, the immune response induced in PMs from CRC and how it relates to patient survival is still unknown. In this study, we characterized the immune infiltrates and the distribution of immune checkpoint receptors on T cells from PMs from CRC, in or

Peritoneal metastasis is a common finding in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Beyond systemic chemotherapy, additive local treatments such as cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy are considered an inherent part of different multimodal treatment concepts for selected patients with peritoneal metastatic gastric cancer. This review article discusses the role of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and intraperitoneal chemotherapy, including HIPEC, NIPS, and PIPAC, as additive therapeutic options with curative and palliative intent.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC), particularly for advanced stage of GC, commonly undergoes peritoneal metastasis (PM), which is the leading cause of GC-related death. However, there currently has no reliable biomarker to predict the onset of GCPM. It is well known that the imbalance of gut microbiota contributes to the development and metastasis of gastrointestinal tumors. Unfortunately, little is known about how the alternation in gut microbiota is associated with the onset of GCPM.
METHODS: Our current study analyzed structural characteristics and functional prediction of gut microbiota in
