A retrospective chart review: adolescents with borderline personality disorder, borderline personality traits, and controls.

With an estimated lifetime prevalence as high as 5.9% in the general population, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by marked impulsivity as well as difficulties in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects. The burden on the health care system is immense with BPD patients accounting for 10%-20% of the patients in mental health outpatient facilities and 15%-40% in mental health inpatient facilities. Further, while 75%-80% of BPD patients attempt to commit suicide, 10% succeed; this mortality rate exceeds even that of anorexia nervosa which,

Suicidality in People With Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms or Personality Traits.

Objective: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) have been reported to be associated with mood instability (MI), depression and suicide-related outcomes. We examined whether obsessive-compulsive symptoms and personality traits as well as obsessional thoughts of death, are associated with suicidal thoughts, non-suicidal self-injury and attempted suicide. Methods: We used data from 7,839 people from the 2000 British Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey that elicited symptoms of OCD with a computerized version of the Clinical Interview Schedule-Rev

Spotlight on brexpiprazole and its potential in the treatment of schizophrenia and as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of major depression.

Antipsychotic agents, utilized for the treatment of a range of psychiatric disorders, differ substantially in terms of their pharmacology and adverse effect profiles. Incomplete and variable efficacy, differences in safety-tolerability, and highly heterogeneous response across individuals prompt development of new agents. Brexpiprazole is one of the two most recently introduced antipsychotic agents approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and as an adjunct for treatment of major depressive disorder. Its pharmacology, clinical trial data, and efficacy and side effects in comparison with othe

The Cognitive Architecture of Obsessional Doubt: Inferential Confusion and Feared Selves in OCD-Relevant Intrusions.

Although previous research has examined the individual roles of unwanted intrusive thoughts (UITs), inferential confusion and feared selves in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), no study to date has evaluated their combined effects on OCD severity. This is particularly relevant given that the inference-based approach (IBA) posits a close link between inferential confusion and feared selves in the context of obsessional doubt. The present study with a cross-sectional design investigated the role of inferential confusion and feared selves in mediating the relationship between OCD-relevant UITs

Prevalence and characteristics of suicide attempters and ideators among acutely admitted psychiatric hospital patients in northwest Russia and northern Norway.

BACKGROUND: More knowledge about suicidality and suicide risk profiles in acute psychiatric hospital patients (both first-time and chronic patients) is needed. While numerous factors are associated with suicidality in such populations, these may differ across cultures. Better understanding of factors underlying suicide risk can be informed by cross-cultural studies, and can aid development of therapeutic and preventive measures. METHODS: An explorative, cross-sectional cohort study was carried out. Acutely admitted patients at one psychiatric hospital in northwest Russia and two in northern N

Exploring the Impact of Sex and Gender in Brain Function: Implications and Considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Sex and gender are crucial variables in understanding brain development and disease. Biological sex is determined by genetic and hormonal factors, whereas gender is a multidimensional construct shaped by social and cultural influences. The interplay of these factors contributes to sex-specific susceptibilities and disease progression in psychiatric and neurological disorders. However, sex and gender are often considered as a single variable, which can lead to biased data analysis and interpretation. This commentary aims to analyze how sex and gender influence brain structure and

Resting-state functional connectivity of the human hypothalamus.

Communication pathways of the hypothalamus with other brain regions and the periphery are critical to successfully control key physiological and psychological processes. With advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques, it is possible to target hypothalamic function and infer discrete hypothalamus networks. Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) is a promising tool to study the functional organization of the brain and may act as a marker of individual differences and dysfunctions. Based on recent fMRI findings, the hypothalamus is mostly connected to parts of the str

Mortality of 403 patients with mood disorders 48 to 52 years after their psychiatric hospitalisation.

The purpose is to analyse differences in mortality among patients with major depressive disorders (MDD), bipolar-II (BP-II), bipolar-I (BP-I) disorders and mania with or without minor depressive disorders and to identify risk factors of mortality. The sample represents all admissions for depression or mania over 5 years (1959-1963) to the Psychiatric Hospital of Zurich University, serving a large area. 403 patients were included and followed up every 5 years until 1985; thereafter, mortality data were collected repeatedly until 2009 when 352 (87 %) patients had died. Standardised mortality rat

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Group Psychoeducation Program for Patients With Pathological Narcissism With or Without a Diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Pathological narcissism (PN) and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are common yet highly stigmatized conditions for which no empirically validated treatment currently exists, despite growing evidence of the central role of psychoeducation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of our recently published group psychoeducation program for patients with PN, with or without a diagnosis of NPD. Twenty-five adult patients, who met ≥3 NPD criteria or presented with mean grandiosity and vulnerability scores ≥3 on the Pathological Narcissism Inventory-Brief Form

Embracing the psychological complexity of tinnitus-correlated distress: from descriptive nosology to person-centred explanatory models.

Chronic tinnitus presents a psychosomatic paradox: while the perceptual characteristics of the sound are often similar across individuals and typically linked to hearing loss, the distress it evokes differs substantially. This distress predicts the experiential quality, persistence, and chronification of tinnitus perception, thereby shaping what is recognised as chronic tinnitus or tinnitus disorder in clinical practice. In conceptualizing distress, two interconnected processes of medicalisation can be observed: first, the framing of distressing tinnitus as a medical disorder in its own right;

Stereo-encephalography-guided multi-lead deep brain stimulation for treatment-refractory obsessive compulsive disorder - study design and individualized surgical targeting approach.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (trOCD) is a complex network disorder that may require personalized treatment strategies due to disease heterogeneity. A multi-site, multi-stage, double-blinded, randomized crossover clinical trial is underway, using stereo electroencephalography (sEEG) to guide selection of multi-nodal targets for deep brain stimulation (DBS) for trOCD. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical trial design, emphasizing personalized surgical targeting strategies that ensure the feasibility and precision of sEEG electrode placement, and enable adequa

IUPHAR review - Novel therapeutic targets for schizophrenia treatment: A translational perspective.

Schizophrenia is a severe and debilitating psychiatric disorder that profoundly impacts cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Despite its devastating personal and societal toll, current treatments often provide only partial relief, underscoring the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies. This review explores emerging approaches that target the complex neurobiological underpinnings of schizophrenia, moving beyond traditional dopamine-centric models. Among these, some novel drugs still employ multimodal mechanisms, simultaneously targeting dopaminergic and serotonergic systems

Psychosis induced by invocation presenting as possession state: A case of Kitousei-Seishinbyo still emerging in modern Japan.

BACKGROUND: Kitousei-Seishinbyo, or psychosis induced by invocation, was first described by Morita in 1915 as a culture-bound syndrome characterized by possession-like states and personality transformation triggered by prayer or spiritual practices. New psychosocial triggers (e.g., self-improvement seminars, emerging religious groups) have been identified. However, reports of possession-related episodes have become extremely rare. Diagnostic confusion with dissociative identity disorder or other specified dissociative disorders persists. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her 50s, with no prior ps

Positive psychological functioning, resilience and styles of coping as buffers against suicidal behaviours. A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Studies in the literature mainly focus on understanding the risk factors for suicide, giving little relevance to protective variables. This study aimed at exploring the specific contribution of protective variables (resilience, coping and psychological well-being) in hospitalized suicide attempt (SA) makers. METHODS: We recruited 50 inpatients who made a SA before admission and 50 inpatients with no history of SA matched for DSM-5 diagnosis, gender and age. Protective variables were evaluated with: Brief COPE questionnaire, Dispositional Resilience Scale (DRS-15), Psychological We

Central and peripheral physiological responses to decision making in hoarding disorder.

Individuals with hoarding disorder (HD) have difficulty parting with personal possessions, which leads to the accumulation of excessive clutter. According to a proposed biphasic neurobiological model, HD is characterized by blunted central and peripheral nervous system activity at rest and during neutral (non-discarding) decisions, and exaggerated activity during decision-making about discarding personal possessions. Here, we compared the error-related negativity (ERN) and psychophysiological responses (skin conductance, heart rate and heart rate variability, and end tidal CO2) during neutral
